How to paint aluminum wheels yourself

How to paint car rims with your own hands

The question of how to paint your car's rims yourself is often asked by both newbies in automotive matters and experienced car owners.

Time passes and even on a new car the rims become covered with corrosion and scratches, which do not evoke the same admiration for their well-groomed appearance.

The wheels need to be re-prepared and painted. We’ll look at how to do this in this article.

How to paint car rims yourself

Car wheels are manufactured in two versions:

  • stamped steel;
  • from light alloys, which, in turn, are divided into cast and forged.

The first option is most susceptible to scratches, chips, and slipping of the paint layer. All manufacturers initially install stamped steel wheels on cars.

They are cheap and, complete with hubcaps, create the appearance of beautiful wheels. Time passes, the caps are either lost or broken, and the discs lose their original appearance.

Alloy wheels are usually produced in a beautiful silver or silver-black finish.

They do not scratch, last a long time, and therefore rarely require additional painting during operation. Therefore, only stamped steel wheels need to be painted.

The most common ways of painting wheels among Russian car enthusiasts are:

Three types of processing are best suited: acrylic, aerosol, liquid rubber. Acrylic is available in a wide variety of colors, it is convenient to apply to the surface, and you can paint even a very small area.

However, for all its advantages, acrylic paint is less resistant to scratches, abrasions, and other damage to the applied layer.

Careless driving, especially by inexperienced drivers, through bushes, potholes, and hummocks peels off a layer of paint. The metal of the discs again becomes covered with corrosion, dust, and dirt.

Powder paint, unlike acrylic paint, can last on wheel rims for a long period without losing its original shine.

It is stable, wear-resistant, the coating on the stamped and cast surface is not scratched or deformed. The substance is intended for production purposes, that is, it is used to coat newly cast and stamped discs.

However, there are certain difficulties with applying it yourself. Powder paint is applied using complex technology that requires special equipment.

With this paint it is impossible to paint a scratched or deformed fragment of a disk - only the entire surface.

When deciding how to paint your car's wheels yourself, it is better to give preference to powder paint. It will last on the car much longer without causing problems during operation.

But if the car owner wants variety, shine, brightness and is ready for daily careful care of the wheels, you can use acrylic paint. In this case, the car will become the original vehicle in the area.

Liquid rubber has proven itself very well when updating wheel rims. In recent years, Russian motorists are increasingly using it for painting.

The matte, glossy black coating penetrates well into the metal, protecting the surface from stone chips, corrosion processes, abrasions, and scratches.

How to paint car rims with your own hands

Due to the high cost of carrying out paintwork at service stations, Russian motorists prefer to carry out such work in their own garages or in the courtyards of private estates.

Any painting method is preceded by thorough washing and preparation of objects for processing. The simplest, least expensive method is painting from an aerosol can.

Painting wheels with canned aerosol

Advantages of this method:

  • the paint is applied to any unprepared, unsanded, unprimed surface;
  • the aerosol layer reliably protects against all road impacts, dust, and dirt;
  • the development of corrosion foci is prevented;
  • the substance from the can can be sprayed onto fragments of any configuration.

Consumables

To carry out the work you will need:

  • rags or microfiber cloths, car shampoo;
  • masking tape;
  • sandpaper of various grain sizes – No. 120 – No. 800;
  • varnish, degreaser, solvent;
  • 1 – 2 cans of primer;
  • special aerosol paint, which, unlike regular automotive paint, better protects metal in conditions of high temperatures and impact damage.

When purchasing aerosol paint, varnish, or primer, you must carefully select materials that belong to the same brand or are compatible with each other. The paint should be as wear-resistant as possible.

Acrylic mixtures and polyurethane-based compositions have proven themselves to be excellent. The best quality paint mixtures have a powder base and contain polyester pigments.

To ensure durability, when applying them it is necessary to use sophisticated professional equipment, which is not available in a garage or private yard.

Preparation

  1. The wheels of the car are removed from their original places.
    This is necessary to reduce the area covered with masking tape, and also avoids paints from getting on the car body parts.
  2. The discs are washed from dirt with water, shampoo, rags, and rags.
    You can use toothbrushes and smaller objects to clean elements with complex configurations.
  3. Sand areas with old paint and uneven areas using coarse sandpaper.
  4. Clean the surface to be painted with fine-grained sandpaper.
  5. Use a jet of compressed air and a cloth to remove dust.
  6. Apply a layer of degreaser to the surface to be treated, which will prevent the applied paint from peeling off.
  7. Cover the rubber surface of the tire with adhesive tape.

The primer is applied to the prepared surface of the steel disc. The temperature in the work area must not be lower than +10ºС.

Before starting to spray the soil, the can must be shaken. It must be applied from approximately 25 centimeters away.

When applying primer, in order to distribute it evenly, it is necessary to cover the metal with a thin layer. After completing the operation, carefully inspect the surface of the coating. Clean off roughness and unevenness with fine sandpaper.

To ensure the safety of people, it is necessary to use protective equipment when painting:

  • Rubber shoes;
  • Impregnated overalls;
  • Tight glasses;
  • Respiratory mask.

When painting products with highly toxic acrylic substances, personal protective equipment should be used.

Self-painting of car wheels with aerosols is carried out in several layers, which are applied after 15 minutes. When the final layer is applied, the composition must dry completely. Aerosol paint dries in a maximum of 4 hours.

Finally, the surface is varnished, after which the protective coating is removed. A mirror-like shine on products is achieved by processing with special polishes using professional equipment.

Acrylic painting

This procedure is most popular among Russian motorists. When working with the material, specific knowledge is not needed. Equipment can be found in every garage cooperative or borrowed from neighbors.

  • compressor, spray gun;
  • primer mixtures, paint;
  • sanding paper No. 200 and No. 400;
  • electric drill with “Ruff” device;
  • a construction hair dryer; if you don’t have one, you can use a home hair dryer;
  • solvent;
  • protective equipment for hands and respiratory tract.

Preparation

The technology of applying acrylic involves partial restoration of the surface. After carrying out the work: washing, cleaning from dirt, old paint, the metal is first cleaned with coarse sandpaper, then all significant irregularities, nicks, scratches, chips are sanded with fine sandpaper. Metal surface defects that cannot be cleaned are filled with putty.

The final preparation is cleaning from abrasive particles and washing under high pressure. When painting wheels without removing them from the car, it is necessary to protect the rubber fragments of the wheels with masking tape and newspapers, leaving only the metal surface exposed.

Padding

Important! Before applying the primer, it is necessary to dry the metal very thoroughly using a hair dryer. A serious defect can appear from one drop of water, reducing the service life of the wheels and ruining their appearance.

The disk suspended on a wire is degreased. Uniform deposition of layers is achieved by heating from a hair dryer.

Using a spray gun, liquid soil is applied from a distance of 25 cm. It is important to maintain the correct consistency of the composition. Liquid soil causes defects.

It is strictly forbidden to form a large layer at once. Professionals do this in three passes.

The next layer is applied only after the previous one has completely dried. This happens after 30 minutes. To speed up the drying of the primer, use a hairdryer.

Painting

Having decided how to paint the rims on a car with your own hands, after the primer has completely dried, proceed directly to painting.

Acrylic paint is applied in several layers. You should take your time, act slowly, allowing each layer to dry. Paint that is too thin may leave streaks. To avoid this, it is necessary to apply a test layer to the prepared sheet of metal.

The maximum quality of painting is achieved with at least three layers. Hard-to-reach areas are difficult to treat using conventional methods.

Such fragments require a creative approach and non-standard solutions. Painted discs must dry well.

Liquid rubber - we paint the wheels ourselves

This new material has many advantages:

  • an abundance of creative colors and shades, except chrome;
  • high wear resistance, equivalent to powder painting;
  • complete blocking of all scratches, chips, abrasions;
  • ease of application, availability of materials, tools, equipment.

There is only one drawback - the high cost, but this is more than compensated by the good quality, reliability, and durability of the coating.

  • shoes, gloves, respirator;
  • acetone;
  • raw rubber in a can, it is better and more reliable than paint.

When applying the material without removing the wheels from the car, prepare newspapers and masking tape.

Preparation

Before applying liquid rubber, you can prepare the surface less thoroughly than for acrylic painting. You can leave a layer of previous painting, scratches, chips.

The main thing is to thoroughly wash and degrease the metal before applying rubber. When the wheels are dry, the initial layer of the substance is applied.

When processing discs directly on the car, it is necessary to protect all rubber elements and brake pads.

In order to ensure a better fit of liquid layers of rubber and penetration into hard-to-reach places, it is recommended to remove all wheels from the car.

Painting

Liquid rubber is sprayed evenly over the entire metal surface. The first base layer is made transparent, the old paint underneath is visible. The second layer is applied more intensely while maintaining transparency.

Layer follows layer, quantity depending on color. Usually craftsmen apply 3 – 7 layers. Liquid rubber dries faster than paint, so the next layer is sprayed every 10 minutes.

The distance from the tool to the material affects whether the discs become matte or glossy after processing. The close location of the can to the surface provides a greater degree of gloss of the coating.

The distance can be checked by testing. Once you have set this size, you should not change it until the work is completed.

How to paint alloy wheels with your own hands?

To create an attractive appearance, it is important to examine all the details of the design. When looking at successful and especially beautiful cars, it is the wheels that capture the eye. Painting alloy wheels is a way to complement the overall decor of your car and express yourself. After painting, the appearance of both a new and 20-year-old car is improved. Don’t neglect an effective tool for creating your own style, but use it for your own purposes.

Painting alloy wheels is a way to complement the overall decor of the car and express yourself

Why do you need to paint alloy wheels?

Car wheels always come into contact with external environments, which mainly have a negative impact. The paint for discs must take this feature into account and be resistant to all sorts of destructive influences, otherwise it will soon begin to peel and burst, leading to exposure of the base. After the paint layer is destroyed and corrosion appears, the car loses its appearance and becomes extremely ordinary, and sometimes causes pity.

The main reasons for the need to paint alloy wheels

For clarity, we will indicate 3 main reasons, but there are many more of them:

  • Salt compounds in winter. To improve the condition of roads, government services sprinkle salt on city roads. When mixed with dirt, snow and sand, a particularly aggressive environment is formed, into which the wheel and bottom get caught, but it is the disks that are most susceptible to destruction. Many car enthusiasts may notice the first signs of damage after 1-2 winter trips. A highly effective composition for protection against salt mixtures has not yet been developed.
  • Country roads. When driving off-road or on uneven ground, the ground causes damage to the condition of the discs. The soil contains many stones of various fractions, which destroy the protective surface and lead to corrosion or oxidation. Gradually, the car disc becomes completely covered with scratches and sometimes chips. As damage increases, paint peeling accelerates. Dirt gets into small gaps in the paint, causing the appearance to suffer greatly.
  • Sudden change in temperature. It is recommended to paint the rims for fear of temperature changes, since winter comes unexpectedly in Russia. Sudden temperature changes lead to a proportional change in the size of the disk, as well as a significant decrease in the strength of the paint.

Alloy wheels also often need painting

Due to the above reasons, the need for painting car rims is increasing. A simple option is to use the services of painters, service stations or certified service centers. The disadvantage of this method is the significant cost of funds. An alternative way is to delve into the question of how to paint alloy wheels yourself and do the whole procedure yourself.

Which paint to choose

First of all, the purpose of painting wheel rims is to protect the material from destruction. More often they are based on an aluminum-magnesium alloy, which is subject to oxidation from exposure to the external environment. The second task is to improve the design.

Painting alloy wheels with your own hands should begin with selecting the optimal paint composition; today there are 3 most popular directions:

Acrylic auto enamel Mobihel

  • Acrylic based. Do-it-yourself painting of discs is mainly done with acrylic paints. The composition is supported by the huge variety of colors. Sold in cans and cans; for the first type you will have to use a compressor and a spray gun. The dye in an aerosol can be used immediately.
  • In powder form. Painting of alloy wheels can be done by any type, but it is preferable to use the powder type for wheels. The main disadvantage of this type is the difficulty of application in unprepared conditions. It is very difficult to ensure sufficient quality of powder coating in the garage due to the lack of a drying chamber, because it needs a special temperature to harden.
  • Liquid rubber. An interesting auto-disc composition, it is very convenient to use and durable, but it is not cheap.

Today, an aerosol is often used; it is used to restore the paintwork of a car: body, wheels, individual parts and painting interior plastic. In order for the tires to receive sufficient protection, you will need to treat 4 wheels with 3-4 spray cans.

Consumables and tools

You can reduce the time required to work with auto enamel if you prepare the tools and materials in advance:

  • solvent - will be necessary to degrease the surface;
  • grinding machine;
  • rags and any liquid detergent;
  • fine-grained material (200–600) for grouting;
  • putty, paint and varnish;
  • any paper and masking tape;
  • personal protective equipment – special clothing and a respirator.

Solvent for surface degreasing Brief recommendations

Some tips on how to paint your wheels in the best way:

  • adjust the lighting of the wheel part and the workplace. Your lighting may be insufficient, and 1 carrier is not a suitable light source;
  • experts say that an important condition for quality preparation is a sandblasting device. Without it, it will be difficult to create a perfectly smooth, clean surface. Such an edit is appropriate only if it is possible to use the device;
  • if you decide to paint the wheels using a composition from cans, you need to take care of purchasing a compressor and a spray gun;
  • instructions for almost all paints require maximum cleanliness of the room and absence of dust. The optimal temperature is 15–20 °C.

The main stages of painting alloy car wheels with your own hands: technologies and their implementation

The painting technology implies the need to remove the tire; this is the most effective way to qualitatively paint a cast wheel in any color. Some amateurs do not want to waste time on dismantling and immediately paint the parts. In the installed state it is impossible to paint the surface of the material well. If the slightest disc area is not painted over, destruction will begin from that place. When deciding to reduce the time, you need to separate the steel or aluminum wheel from the tire using paper and tape.

Preparing alloy wheels for painting

Preparatory stage

The painting technique at home requires basic preparation measures:

  • remove as much as possible any contamination from the wheel: paint, dirt, bitumen, any fastenings, etc. There are a lot of liquid cleaning products on the shelves of auto chemical goods, any will do;
  • if the structure has chips or deep damage, they should be treated with putty. You should go over the composition two or three times with sandpaper. To begin with, use a larger fraction (200–300), then a smaller one – 400 and finally – 600;
  • the disc will have to be thoroughly washed again with clean water to remove all debris remaining after grinding;
  • degrease the base with solvent.

During the process of rubbing the putty, you need to periodically wet the surface when your hand feels significant heating. The manual procedure will take a lot of time, the work will be painfully monotonous and uninteresting. To speed up the work, it is better to use a grinding machine.

Painting stage

According to the dyeing technique and technology, an algorithm of actions has been developed:

Coating alloy wheels with primer

  • Primer covering. When using a primer in aerosol form, be sure to shake the composition. To spray the product, you need to hold the can at a distance of 20–25 cm. High-quality lighting is important here to prevent leaks and leaks of liquid. Leave the layer to dry, it takes 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Cleaning up. Now you need to form a plane using 200–300 grit sandpaper. To improve the condition of the surface, a cross motion is used, then abrasions and scratches do not appear.
  • Purge. To remove dust after wiping, blow off the surface with compressed air. Now the coating is primed and sanded again.
  • Wiping. Before painting, it is recommended to wipe the discs using napkins. It is important not to use standard rags, otherwise lint will appear, worsening the final result.
  • Initial layer. Using a spray gun or from a regular spray can, you need to treat the part from a distance of 20 to 25 cm. To dry, you need to leave the disc for 20–30 minutes.
  • Second layer. The procedure corresponds to the previous stage, only now you should especially carefully monitor the uniformity of paint coverage. All stripes must overlap each other. The disc is dried for 20–30 minutes.
  • Finishing layer. When the paint has acquired its final strength, it needs to be treated with a varnishing compound. It is recommended to varnish 2 times, but 1 coat is sufficient. Varnish takes longer to dry than paint, about 18–24 hours.

If you want to improve the appearance, you can polish the top. The color with a matte effect looks attractive. Discs that glow at night have an extraordinary design. The luminous composition is relatively expensive.

Conclusion

The painting process has many pitfalls, but by following the instructions, you can avoid unexpected results and rapid destruction of the coating. To perform the procedure efficiently, you should not rush, but be careful. Excessive savings on paint can negatively affect the durability of the paintwork; it is better to prefer compositions from well-known brands.

How to paint aluminum wheels yourself

During vehicle operation, the wheels suffer the most. There are plenty of holes, potholes, speed bumps and other “wheel traps” on our roads. Falling into such a trap, not only the tires suffer, but also the wheel rim. If you can purchase the damaged tire as a single copy, then the disk is unlikely. And buying all four discs at once significantly hits your pocket. But you can paint and thereby “update” your set of aluminum wheels in a garage at minimal cost and with your own hands. The cost of materials will be only 10-20 percent of the cost of a new set of disks.

Wheel rims are painted for various reasons - oxidized, peeling, scratched, or you simply don’t like the color. You can bring the disc into decent shape without even removing the rubber. Let's look at how to do this step by step.

Step-by-step guide on how to paint rims yourself in the garage

  1. Wash as much as possible (preferably in a car wash) all the wheels along with the tires, as you will have to stick tape on the wheels.
  2. We inspect the wheels and decide whether it will be necessary to putty. If the wheels do not have severe chips, but the paint coating is simply damaged, puttying is not necessary (we save on buying putty).
  3. Let's go get the materials.
    We will need: - Putty for aluminum (the smallest package), if you decide to putty.
    - Sandpaper of two types, sand on dry - 250-grit (two leaves) and on wet - 800-grit (two leaves).
    — 300 grams of primer for aluminum.
    — 200 grams of car paint based on wheel size 15.
    We go to the offices for the selection of auto paint, because... we don't need large volumes. We buy paint without selection (it’s cheaper). - Solvents.
    At the paint selection, you will be poured the necessary solvents in small quantities. — 300 grams of varnish + hardener.
    — One covering film (which is for covering plants in the garden).
    - Masking tape.
  4. Preparing the ground is the most labor-intensive task in all the work. Using 250-thick sandpaper, we remove all the chips and transitions on the disks to the point of “passing my hand and not noticing the roughness.” If necessary, we putty on strong chips and also sand them to zero.
  5. We divide the covering film into eight parts (twice four) and, wrapping our wheels, cut out a hole for the disk. We glue the film to the rubber with tape at the very edge of the disc.
  6. We dilute the primer and use a spray bottle to prime our wheels. You can always borrow a small compressor and a spray bottle from friends for a couple of days.
  7. After the soil has dried (usually the next day), remove the film and use 800-grit sandpaper and water to go over the entire surface until it is as smooth as possible. We wash the remains of the erased soil with water, dry it and cover our wheels with film as before.

It is MANDATORY to change the film after priming before painting! The primer does not adhere well to the film and when painting it can come off the old film and end up on the surface to be painted.

  • We dilute the paint, degrease the surface and paint the wheels. Painting must be done in three layers. The first two layers can be painted “wet on wet”, and the third layer is applied over well-dried layers using a wide spray method so that the metallic paint particles lie evenly on the surface.
  • While the paint dries, dilute the varnish for 15-20 minutes. The varnish is diluted with the hardener and mixed thoroughly. The solvent is added immediately before painting, because The varnish should sit with the hardener for just 15-20 minutes.
  • Apply varnish in 2-3 layers, drying for 10 minutes after each layer. Usually the discs are placed in a row, and while you are varnishing the last one, the first one has already dried. Complete drying of the varnish at +20 degrees takes an average of a day.
  • This is how you can restore old rims in two days at minimal cost. The eyes are afraid, as they say, but the hands do!

    If you still decide not to bother with painting the wheels, but to purchase a new set, then the most popular today are GR wheels from the world-famous Asian company GR Industries. Our own research center and two design bureaus allow us to create alloy wheels that are beautiful, ergonomic, with ideal dynamic characteristics and an affordable price tag.

    How to paint car rims at home

    Reading time: 7 minutes

    Car enthusiasts know that sooner or later the rims on a car wear out and require restoration. If you have extra money, you can simply replace them with new ones or take them to a car repair shop for painting. But both options involve significant financial investments. The most profitable alternative is painting the wheels yourself. For novice car enthusiasts, this option may seem impossible, but not everything is as difficult as it seems.

    Wheels come in steel and light alloy, so the painting process is slightly different. Alloy wheels should be pre-primed with a special primer, which is used for non-ferrous metals. Steel wheels do not need this procedure. But if they have a lot of scratches and microcracks, then you still have to sand and prime everything.

    DIY car rim painting

    How to paint car rims with your own hands

    In order to paint a car wheel yourself, you will need some tools and materials. Most of them are probably in every car enthusiast's garage:

    • sandpaper of different grain sizes;
    • grinding machine with attachment;
    • primer;
    • masking tape;
    • degreaser;
    • putty for cars;
    • dye;
    • varnish

    An important point is the room in which the procedure will be carried out. It should be light, dry and sufficiently ventilated. You also need to pay attention to the temperature indicators; they must correspond to those indicated on the paint and varnish.

    The next stage is the complete preparation of the car disk for restoration. The step-by-step instructions are as follows:

    • Remove old paint and rust.
    • Remove saw remains.
    • Degrease.
    • Cover the rubber with film and masking tape.
    • Prime.
    • Paint in several layers.
    • After drying, coat with varnish.

    When working with paints and caustic substances, safety glasses, a respirator and gloves must be present. Missing such important details can lead to health problems.

    Preparing for painting

    Do-it-yourself painting of stamped discs from a spray can

    In order to repaint a car disc, you must first prepare it, that is, thoroughly wash and dry it. Stamped models are most often susceptible to corrosion, so the stage of its removal is the most labor-intensive. In this case, a regular drill with a wire attachment will help. The more thoroughly the surface is cleaned, the better the paint coating will adhere.

    Next, you should sand the surface with sandpaper and clean the saw blade with a clean rag or blow it with a compressor. Another assistant in the fight against corrosion is a rust converter. With its help, all damaged areas on the surface are removed. It must be applied as written on the label. After complete drying, automotive putty, which has two components (two-component), is applied to the defective areas. It is necessary to carefully align all bends.

    After the putty has dried, everything is sanded with fine-grained sandpaper and degreased. Next, you should prime the work surface. The primer is applied in several layers with each layer drying in between. The spray distance should be 20 centimeters. After it has completely dried, the most important moment comes - painting.

    The can must be shaken thoroughly before use and the paint material must be sprayed in a thin layer. There should be several such stages, and to avoid the formation of unnecessary drips, each layer should dry for at least 20 minutes. If you do manage to create a sagging, it can be removed with fine sandpaper. But this can only be done on the first layers of color.

    As practice shows, this method of painting is very convenient and the required consumption of dye is reduced to 3-4 cans for four wheels. If desired, you can coat the surface with varnish.

    Spray painting a car wheel

    What and how to paint wheels

    You can paint rims both at home and in a car service center. But the second option requires significant costs, so you can resort to painting yourself. Many people are interested in: how to paint wheel rims with your own hands, and what dyes can be used? Suitable for such purposes:

    But at the same time, this material also has a drawback - its application is carried out with specialized equipment. And such equipment is very expensive, so acrylic is more convenient for home use. It is applied quickly and does not require significant costs.

    Painting alloy wheels

    Aluminum wheels are painted almost the same as stamped ones, but there are still several distinctive nuances. The material from which such a disc is made is much softer than stamping, so you need to work with it more carefully. First, you should check it for severe deformations. That is, to detect possible breaks, deep scratches, and jams.

    The most reliable option is to check its balancing at a service station.

    And if all the defects are minor, then you can start working. First you need to clean it and wash it from dirt. After drying, a special remover for the old coating should be applied to the surface. This is done with a regular brush. After 15 minutes, the old material must be removed using a spatula. The soil layer is removed with sandpaper.

    Next, you need to cover the rubber with film and stick masking tape along the contour. The working surface is degreased and dried well. After this, several layers of primer are applied to the disc, and then paint and varnish. Complete drying of a car disc, both stamped and cast, occurs after 6-7 days. For this period, it is better not to touch or use it, otherwise the paintwork may be damaged.

    How to properly prepare car wheels for painting

    The most important and responsible stage of painting a disc is its proper preparation. If you skip any of the stages or do it poorly, then all the work can go down the drain. Old coating can be removed in several ways:

    • heating;
    • special liquid;
    • sandblasting.

    Thanks to this heating, the coating peels off and can be removed with a spatula. The use of liquid has already been mentioned earlier in the article. This method is considered the most popular, as it does not require much effort and expense. But sandblasting is the most progressive. It is able to remove not only outdated coatings, but also rust.

    But not everyone has such a device, so you can either turn to professionals or choose another method of processing disks. To level the surface, you must use sandpaper with a grit of 300-400. Next, the paper is changed to P 1000 and the surface is processed to perfect smoothness. You need to start work from the inside of the disk. Those defects that could not be eliminated with sandpaper are finished off with putty. The method of applying it was mentioned earlier in the article.

    Proper disc processing

    You can degrease the surface not only with a special product; gasoline, alcohol, and solvent are also suitable for this. After this stage it is necessary to prime the surface. This step cannot be skipped, since the primer serves as a connecting link between the metal and the enamel. After applying the first layer, you can see previous imperfections. It is still possible to remove them; you just need to rub the error with sandpaper. The primer is applied in several layers. Professionals recommend drying it for about 12 hours. This will help the material adhere more firmly to the disc. Next comes the painting stage.

    How to paint car wheels at home? Yes, it’s easy if you clearly know what to do and what preparatory steps should be carried out. Painting it yourself may take a lot of time, but it will require little investment. In addition, such work will be done efficiently, because it is done for oneself.

    Do-it-yourself painting of alloy wheels (photo).

    I painted it myself.
    Enamel for cars is of course flimsy, but unfortunately I couldn’t find paint for non-traditional light rims; we sell them only for aluminum: (((I painted it with regular enamel, but in the color I wanted. Everything was bought in regular stores, the budget for painting all 4 disks in the region of 2-2.5 thousand + a lot of tedious work on cleaning, sanding, etc.

    a long
    time. We'll see if there are enough of them :))) Since there is no second set of wheels, I used the following scheme:
    We put a spare tire in place of one wheel, take off the disk and throw away the bald summer tires, paint the disk, put new winter tires on it and put it on the car, so all 4 wheels : )))

    What you need for work.

    This is what the disk once looked like.

    This is what my disk looked like after several Perm winters; the coating was eaten away by the salt.

    The disc has been washed, weights have been removed, etc.

    After washing off the paint, clean it with a spatula. I didn’t find sandblasting, I used a wash.

    We hang it up and degrease it with solvent.

    Primer, then wait for it to dry and sand all the jambs again, then lightly prime again and dry.

    Three layers of paint, the first barely covers the ground, wait 10-15 minutes and the second, main layer, wait 10-15 minutes and the final layer, at a great distance.

    Leave to dry for a day, preferably two if the temperature is about 25 degrees.

    Just painting it seemed banal to me and I decided to restore the inscription. I made a mock-up of the inscription in Corel and ordered an adhesive stencil from an advertising agency.

    Glue the stencil onto the completely dry disk. Soapy water helps a lot.
