What cars are assembled in Japan for Russia?

What cars are not assembled in Russia, but can be bought on our market

When purchasing a car, almost all people pay attention to the assembly. Many people think that if a car is made by domestic craftsmen, then it will often break down and some parts, for example, sound insulation, will not reach European quality. Of course, sometimes this is really noticeable, but to the credit of our masters, it is worth noting that such cases are becoming less and less common. By the way, experts note that it is best to buy a car made in your own country. After all, local engineers know all the features of roads and the preferred driving habits of residents.

For those who are still sure that our assembly, let’s say, is substandard, this article was written. In it we will figure out which cars are not assembled in Russia. But let’s say right away that all AvtoVAZ inventions are assembled only here. Therefore, it would be more correct to say which foreign cars are not assembled in Russia.

Cars from Nissan

We will not touch cars from concerns such as Ferrari or Aston Martin. After all, it is already clear that supercars, and especially hypercars, are not made in Russia. Therefore, let’s pay attention to the price category up to 900 thousand rubles.

Let's start with Nissan models. Nissan Tiida is assembled for our market in Mexico. This is the car that is being made the furthest geographically. Previously, it was supplied to us from Thailand, but now this plant is temporarily closed. It is supplied to us in two body types. For European markets, the car is assembled in Japan.

Nissan Qashqai is the best-selling SUV in Russia. Since the first delivery in 2007, more than two million vehicles have been sold. They are practical, with efficient engines and pleasant interiors. It is assembled in the UK at a plant in Sunderland.

The Nissan Micra is also made in Sunderland in the UK. This machine sets a certain standard for small models. It was produced in 2003, but to this day is considered the best in its class.

Nissan Juke is assembled in the UK and Japan. This SUV is made with a high driving position and an all-wheel drive version. Since 2010, it has surprised us with its unusual appearance and good headlight position. Basically, this car attracts the fair sex, and it is considered a purebred.

The Nissan Navara is a pickup truck. It is updated quite rarely. This is probably why it is collected only in Spain.

The Nissan Patrol is a true SUV, which is a rarity these days. This is a car that can be used in the harshest road conditions. For Russia, the car is assembled only in Japan.

Since 2006, the Nissan Note has remained a popular car suitable for the whole family. This eco-friendly hatchback is assembled in Sunderland.

Nissan Almera Classic is produced in South Korea at the Samsung plant. Its restyling came out back in 2013, and this was the last update that the company would ever make.

Which Toyota cars are not assembled here?

Toyota Corolla was assembled only in Japan at the Takaoka plant. But, in mid-2013, Russian motorists can buy a Turkish-assembled car. Thus, it turns out that you can only buy a new car made in Turkey, and only Japanese variations are presented on the secondary market. Until recently, our best-selling model;

Toyota RAV4 is a purebred car. It is assembled only in Japan at the Tahara and Takaoka plants. But, in 2016 the company plans to launch a conveyor in St. Petersburg;

Toyota Avensis, despite the fact that it was designed by Japanese engineers, was never assembled in this country. For the Russian market it is made by the British at the Burnaston plant;

Toyota Auris is one of the best-selling hatchbacks in the world. It is assembled in England at the Burnaston plant. The previous generation was supplied to us from Japan;

Toyota Yaris. The smallest car from the Japanese concern ToyotaYaris is assembled for us only in France at the Valenciennes plant;

Toyota Prius with hybrid and classic engines is assembled at Tsutsumi in Japan.

Cars from Hyundai that come to us from abroad

The budget crossover Hyundai ix35 is the most popular small SUV among Russian car enthusiasts. It first appeared on our market in 2010. This car is assembled in three countries - the Czech Republic, Slovakia and South Korea.

Hyundai i30 first entered the Russian market in 2007. It has already survived three generations of restyling, and is supplied to us from the city of Nosovice in the Czech Republic.

The latest generation of the Hyundai i10 subcompact model is supplied to our market only from the factory in Turkey. It is also made in India for global car shows. Until 2013, the car was also assembled for us in India.

Hyundai i40 is produced only at the plant in South Korea. It is a D-class station wagon, first released in 2011. Not only for ours, but also for the world market, it is made in the city of Ulsan.

Hyundai i20 is another purebred car. It entered our market in 2009, and since then it has been assembled for Russia only in South Korea. Although, earlier models were supplied from factories in India and Turkey.

The Hyundai Coupe is no longer available. The car was replaced by a more powerful and aesthetic sedan in 2009. But, if you want to buy this car second-hand, you can be sure that it will be assembled in Korea.

Hyundai Genesis, which represents the top-end full-size E-Class sedan, is assembled only in Japan. He has been a purebred since 2008, that is, from the moment the car appeared on our market.

In general, if you want to find out which cars are not assembled in Russia, you can look at the car’s VIN code. When it starts with the letter "X", the assembly is ours.

Thoroughbreds: the most affordable new Japanese-built cars

To this day, the uniformity of quality standards and components cannot convince lovers of everything “real”: many, when buying a foreign car, want it to be assembled not locally, but foreign-made. And not just a foreign one: if a person buys a BMW, take him out and give him a German car, and not some other car. And having desired a “Japanese”, just buying a car from a Japanese brand is not enough: Nissan Juke is coming to us from the UK, Toyota Corolla from Turkey, Suzuki Vitara from Hungary, and these are just a few examples... What options do those who want a “purebred” have? "Japanese car?

Of course, in response to this question, another category of car owners grinned sarcastically: they say, if you want “real Japanese quality” - buy a right-hand drive car, the Japanese do something really good there, for themselves, and not all this! We won’t go into all the trouble for now: let’s see what’s available for those who don’t want to dig through used ones at auctions, but just come to the dealership and buy a new car. Moreover, there is a choice, and starting budgets cannot even be called extremely high.

  • Price: from 1,229,000 rubles

The most affordable option for “real Japanese,” oddly enough, can be found at Mitsubishi. It’s strange - because the Outlander, with which the ASX shares the platform and the lion’s share of components, is localized in Kaluga, but the compact model comes to us from Japan, while still managing to be a little cheaper. In general, the ASX is an interesting car: a week ago we said that one can buy one on the secondary market at the age of ten years, but at the same time, those who have enough money and desire can purchase a completely new crossover. Moreover, the survivability of the model is not limited to this: at the beginning of the year it underwent a fourth restyling, and such cars with a front part in the style of the new Eclipse Cross should also appear here - although it is not yet clear when.

But technically the ASX has changed little during this time. As mentioned above, it shares the platform with the Outlander, and even their wheelbase is the same down to a millimeter, and the main reduction in size is felt in the rear overhang. The suspensions are identical: MacPherson strut at the front and multi-link at the rear, as are all-round disc brakes. Under the hood there are a couple of familiar engines: a base 1.6-liter with 117 horsepower with the index 4A92 and a two-liter 150-horsepower 4B11. Both engines are naturally aspirated, with a timing chain drive and are equipped with a proprietary MIVEC variable valve timing system. Both the type of transmission and the drive directly depend on the engine: the “junior” unit is combined exclusively with a manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, and the multi-plate clutch in the rear wheel drive and the JF016 variator from Jatco are the prerogative of the “senior” engine.

Prices for the ASX start at 1,229,000 rubles - this is a front-wheel drive car in the Inform version. It includes front airbags, electric drive and heated side mirrors, four electric windows, air conditioning and a basic audio system, while a leather multifunction steering wheel and heated front seats are available for an additional 50 thousand in the Invite version. An all-wheel drive car costs at least 1.53 million rubles - it will already have 7 airbags and climate control. Well, the most expensive and rich version of Instyle comes close to the 1.7 million mark - 1,673,000 rubles.

  • Price: from 1,359,000 rubles

Jimny, after the long-awaited change of generations, still remains a car “for those who understand,” but it fits exactly into the framework we set: the price is slightly higher than that of the previous participant, and the assembly is exclusively Japanese. To meticulously and in detail find out what has changed and what has remained unchanged, you can refer to our test drive, and here we will briefly outline the main features - they are always interesting to listen to.

Jimny has retained all its inherent features: it is still the same tiny frame SUV on two solid axles with a connected front axle and a reduction gear. Yes, the power steering has been replaced by an electric booster, all-wheel drive is activated not by a washer, but by a lever, and the engine has grown a little - instead of the 1.3-liter M13A it is a 1.5-liter K15B with 102 hp, but the four-speed automatic has migrated here unchanged, and even the archaic “screw-ball nut” steering scheme remained the same. The brakes are still unventilated at the front and drums at the rear, and the center of gravity is still high, so the Jimny isn't much friendlier to novice drivers. But those who appreciated the car for the fact that it remained “iron” are still definitely satisfied.

Suzuki Jimny '2018–present

Suzuki Jimny '2018–present

Prices for an SUV have increased by about a couple of hundred thousand with the change of generations: the basic version of the GL with a manual transmission is priced at 1,359,000 rubles. It already has air conditioning, electric windows, heated front seats, an audio system, a light sensor, front airbags and a set of electronic assistants, but the headlights are halogen, the wheels are stamped, and the mirrors are not heated. In addition to all this, you can get an automatic transmission - such a car will cost 1,419,000 rubles. But for diode headlights with washers, alloy wheels, climate control, cruise control and a multimedia system with a 7-inch touchscreen, you need to turn to the GLX version, which only comes with “two pedals” and is priced at 1,569,000 rubles.

  • Price: from 1,490,000 rubles

The change of generations has made the Mazda 3 not only more beautiful, but also more expensive. So much so that at first they didn’t bring us a sedan model, because it turned out to be... more expensive than the larger Mazda 6, localized in Vladivostok. Now they have rightly given up on the price hierarchy: the buyer himself will choose what he likes. What’s worse is that, due to the same price difficulties, our model lacks all-wheel drive and new engines. But since imports from Japan are among our trump cards today, all this should be considered a “payment for purity of origin.”

The engine range of Russian three-ruble cars is reduced to one unit: this is the familiar 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G series engine with direct injection and a high compression ratio of 13, which produces 120 hp without supercharging. The only choice concerns the gearbox: the basic version is equipped with a six-speed manual, and the rest are equipped with a six-speed automatic, which also migrated here from the previous generation. By the way, some changes affected the suspension: the most significant is the appearance of a semi-independent beam instead of a rear multi-link, which, however, most will not notice until they open the instruction manual.

As we have already said, the Mazda 3 turned out to be more expensive than the localized Mazda 6: with a starting price of the latter of 1,543,000 rubles, the only version of the three-ruble ruble that will be cheaper is a manual hatchback in the Drive version for 1,490,000. There will be air conditioning, rain and light sensors, diode head optics, a full set of airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver, a multimedia system with an 8.8-inch screen and even a head-up display, but there will be no leather steering wheel, cruise control and heated mirrors and front seats - for these will have to turn to the Active package for 1.59 million. The third and most expensive version of the Supreme is priced at 1,683,000 rubles: it includes a heated steering wheel, electric front seats, parking sensors, a rear view camera and other options. But the sedan is offered in the only intermediate Active version for 1,570,000 rubles, in order to somehow differentiate it from the “six”.

  • Price: from 1,799,000 rubles

Subaru XV, built on the Impreza base, changed generations a couple of years ago, but retained the concept: it is still the same hatchback, dressed in unpainted plastic and disguised as a crossover. A small trunk and high prices by the standards of the class are “not a bug, but a feature”: but there are branded boxer engines (though only naturally aspirated) and no alternative all-wheel drive along with a CVT. And Japanese origin, of course: Subaru likes to emphasize that all their cars are not only “created by engineers,” but also assembled in Japan. A combo of stereotypes of folk love, in general.

Formally, the list of available engines includes two units, but the 1.6-liter naturally aspirated FB16 is clearly added here simply for variety and an attractive starting price. It lacks direct injection and produces 114 hp, and acceleration to hundreds takes almost 14 seconds. In general, a two-liter FB20D with 150 hp. seems like a more logical choice: the XV still won't leave the 10s, but at least paired with the mandatory CVT and all-wheel drive it can provide a comfortable ride. All-wheel drive is implemented here through a multi-plate hydromechanical clutch, which constantly transmits part of the power to the rear axle and meteres it depending on driving conditions.

The base price tag of 1.8 million rubles, as we already know, was achieved not only due to options, but also thanks to the 1.6-liter engine, which is offered only in this Base version. In principle, it is not poor: 7 airbags, heated mirrors and windshield wiper rest zones, heated front seats, climate control, rain and light sensors and a multifunction steering wheel. The two-liter car already costs 2.05 million, but it also gets diode optics, a heated steering wheel, a rear view camera and roof rails, and the climate control becomes dual-zone. Further options include not only leather upholstery, electric seats and navigation, but also an expanded set of safety and driver assistance systems. The Premium version, which already has all this, is priced at 2.28 million, and the Tokyo special version costs 2.37 million rubles.

  • Price: from 1,910,000 rubles

Mitsubishi opened the top five most affordable Japanese-made cars - and it also closes it. Moreover, it closes with another co-platform crossover - the Eclipse Cross is also a relative of the Outlander and ASX, sharing an older platform with them. Fresh appearance, better quality finishing materials and a new engine - these are its advantages, for which it is proposed to pay more than for the above-mentioned fellow countryman, who is assembled with it at the same factory.

Brands officially sold on the Russian market

Lexus is a division of Toyota that produces premium cars. Initially, the products were aimed at the US market. In the 90s, cars began to be supplied to Europe, and since 1998 to Russia.

Hino is a division of Toyota that produces passenger buses and trucks. Recently it has its official dealers in Russia. Before this, only used trucks from Japan were imported into our country, surprising Russians with their original designs and unusual engineering solutions.

Nissan is the second largest automobile company in Japan, after Toyota. It is world famous for its cars, and in Asian countries also for trucks and buses. Since 1999, a controlling stake in Nissan was sold to Renault, after which both companies headed for the unification of their cars. Since 2009, Nissan has opened its own car assembly plant in Russia.

Infinity - in the eighties, Nissan, like Toyota, registered a separate brand to produce premium cars for the US market. Subsequently, Infinity cars gained recognition in Europe and Russia. All produced sedans, coupes and crossovers are built on the same Nissan FM platform. SUVs and pickup trucks also have a single platform, but are produced exclusively in the United States.

Honda is the third largest Japanese manufacturer of passenger cars and motorcycles. Until 1960, it produced exclusively motorcycles. She got involved in cars contrary to the interests of the Japanese government, and she made the right decision. After the 1973 fuel and energy crisis, Honda's fuel-efficient cars quickly became top sellers in the United States and then in Europe.

Isuzu is a company well known in Russia in the 90s. Since the early 2000s, it gradually began to withdraw from the passenger car market, focusing on the market of trucks and diesel engines. The oldest automobile corporation in Japan does not currently produce passenger cars, but it occupies a leading position in the world in sales of trucks and diesel engines. In 2008, assembly production of light trucks was launched in Russia.

Mazda is a popular brand of passenger cars in the world. It works closely with Ford, thanks to which many models from both companies are produced on a single platform. The only one in the world that produces cars with rotary piston engines. Since 2012, it has its own assembly production in our country.

Mitsubishi is a widely known automobile company in Russia from the Land of the Rising Sun. Until the end of World War II, it produced exclusively aircraft, mainly military ones. After 1946, in addition to the production of cars, it was engaged in mining, telecommunications, financial services, construction and insurance. In 2010, it launched production of its trucks and crossovers in our country. Leader in sales of projection equipment in Russia.

Subaru is Japan's original automobile company. In addition to the unusual design of its passenger cars, they are all equipped with boxer engines. Apart from Subaru, the only company in the world that uses boxer engines is Porsche. Like Mitsubishi, it is widely known for its success in motorsports, especially in rallying.

Suzuki is a Japanese manufacturer of “people's” cars.
All Suzuki models are quite simple in design and affordable. Thanks to this, he has a large number of fans in Russia and other countries. Works closely with Fiat and Chevrolet concerns. Also widely known for its motorcycles. Right-hand drive cars imported from Japan are extremely popular in the Far East. According to statistics, in this region of Russia the share of right-hand drive Japanese cars exceeds 57%.

Japanese brands not sold in Russia

Scion is a division of Toyota Corporation, narrowly specializing in the production of cars for American youth. The products are manufactured and sold only in the United States and are unknown outside that country.

Daihatsu is another division of Toyota, focused on the domestic and European markets. It produces mainly small cars and crossovers of the subcompact and compact class. They are not officially sold in Russia, but are known to car enthusiasts thanks to unofficial “gray” dealers.

Acura is the North American division of Honda, focused on producing premium cars in and for the US market.
Has some popularity in Europe. They were imported to Russia exclusively by “gray” dealers, but from 2014 it is planned to open official representative offices. Dome is a little-known Japanese sports car manufacturer.
Until 2000, he took part in Formula 1 racing. Currently, it carries out orders for the construction of racing cars for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Datsun is a Japanese automobile company that produced passenger cars from 1933 to 1986. In 1986, it was absorbed by the Nissan corporation and ceased to exist as a brand. Since 2012, it has been revived as a brand producing budget cars for developing countries. In the near future it is planned to open sales in Russia. Moreover, the cost of cars will be comparable to AvtoVAZ products.

Tokyo in Shushary. Where are Japanese cars assembled for Russia?

Japanese-made cars are considered very reliable, but recently there are not so many of them. To meet high demand, production has been established in Europe, Asia and the USA. Russia was no exception. Representatives of popular brands claim that the quality of cars does not suffer from the place of manufacture, however, some motorists are sure of the opposite and try to choose a car exclusively made in Japan. What do they have to choose from?

In terms of popularity, Toyota has noticeably outstripped its competitors and is selling better in Russia than Mitsubishi, Subaru, Honda, Mazda, and Suzuki combined. It competes with Nissan, which has entered into deep cooperation with Renault. Thanks to the localization of production, Toyota has achieved dominance in some market segments and remains confident.

Models such as the Toyota Camry and Toyota RAV4 are assembled at the Shushary plant near St. Petersburg. The first Russian Toyota Camry left the plant's assembly line in December 2007, and mass sales began in 2008. Now local production includes stamping of body parts, production of plastic elements, body welding, assembly on a conveyor belt, painting, etc. It's not surprising that the concern can keep prices down for the Toyota Camry and RAV4.

But all the new Toyota Corolla come to us from Turkey from the city of Sakarya. The last purebred Japanese Corolla was sold in Russia in 2013.

The Land Cruiser Prado SUV was assembled from vehicle kits at the Sollers-Bussan plant in 2012-2014. Now production has been curtailed, and these cars, like the more expensive frame SUV Land Cruiser 200, are produced in Japan at a plant in the city of Tahara.

The Toyota Fortuner SUV comes from Thailand.

Toyota's main competitor, Nissan, assembles its models mostly in Russia. The Nissan Manufacturing Rus plant was built near St. Petersburg, where the Qashqai, X-Trail and Murano crossovers are manufactured.

The Almera sedan is manufactured in Togliatti at the production facilities of AvtoVAZ. There, the assembly of 1.6-liter engines for cars of three brands, namely Nissan, Renault and Lada, is underway. The Tarrano SUV, which is an exact copy of the Renault Duster, is being assembled in Moscow.

The brand's only pickup truck sold in Russia, the Navara, is manufactured in Spain.

Nissan only imports the GT-R supercar from Japan.

Mitsubishi

Where are Mitsubishi cars assembled? The Japanese concern also has production in Russia. Together with Peugeot-Citroën, the company built a small plant near Kaluga, where the Mitsubishi Outlander and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport crossovers are currently being created.

The Mitsubishi ASX crossover comes from the USA, where it is mass assembled for America and global markets at a plant in Illinois. And the L200 pickup truck is imported to Russia from Thailand.

Only the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero SUV and the small Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross crossover come to us from Japan. They are manufactured at the Nagoya Plant in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The Japanese company Mazda has a much smaller market share in Russia, however, with the help of Sollers, it has now acquired a small plant in Vladivostok. Two models are manufactured there, namely the Mazda 6 sedan and the Mazda CX-5 crossover, which are delivered from Japan by ship in the form of vehicle kits. Since 2018, assembly of the full-size CX-9 SUV began there.

But the Mazda 3 golf-class sedan and hatchback come to Russia from Japan, where they are created at the Ujima plant in Hiroshima.

Suzuki sells few models here. The purebred Japanese Grand Vitara left the market with the onset of the crisis; its place was taken by the compact crossover Vitara, which is now imported from Hungary. The former Russian bestseller SX4 also has European assembly. It is also manufactured in Hungary.

The only car that comes to us from Japan by ship halfway around the world is the Jimny subcompact SUV.

Honda, which once argued over sales with Mitsubishi, has completely abandoned the import of Japanese-assembled cars to Russia. The large Pilot SUV is imported from the USA, as is the CR-V SUV with a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter engine. power 188 hp With. The CR-V variant with a 2.0-liter unit under the hood is imported from England.

Purebred Japanese

There are three brands on the Russian market that remain true to tradition and supply cars only from Japan. These are Infiniti, Lexus and Subaru.

The premium brand Infiniti tried to localize production in Russia at the Nissan plant near St. Petersburg, but after 2012 large-unit assembly ceased. It turned out to be more profitable to import cars.

Subaru was in the same situation. The demand for their models was not too high to invest in a new plant. Well, brand connoisseurs are ready to overpay for customs and recycling fees. The company currently manufactures all models at the Gunma Yajima facility located in Gunma Prefecture, Japan.

Lexus is produced in Japan at the Kyushu plant in Miyata Prefecture.

Japanese crossovers

Model range of crossovers from Japan (new models 2019-2020): prices in Russia, photographs and characteristics, reviews.

Japan is rightfully considered the birthplace of modern crossovers - all-wheel drive comfortable cars (their single-wheel drive versions were later “stuck” with the concept of “SUV”), because it was in this country that representatives of this class began to be born en masse in the 1990s: in 1994 Toyota RAV4 entered the market, a year later – Honda CR-V... And today Japanese “all-terrain vehicles” are popular all over the world and, without exaggeration, are among the best in this segment.

The first production electric car in the company's history debuted in October 2019 at the Tokyo International Auto Show. This compact SUV boasts an expressive design and a 143-horsepower electric motor, but it has a very modest range.

The subcompact SUV was presented to the world in March 2016 (at the Geneva auto show), but its sales in the Russian Federation started only in June 2018. It is notable for its bold design (both exterior and interior), very rich equipment and modern technical “stuffing”.

The second generation subcompact SUV officially debuted on September 3, 2019 simultaneously in five European cities. It boasts an original design, modern technical components and a wide selection of equipment.

The debut of the 2nd generation car took place in November 2015 (in Los Angeles), but it only reached the Russian Federation in the fall of 2017. Unlike the “first”, the “second” is the Japanese’s own design (with a daring appearance and a “premium” interior).

At the 2015 New York Auto Show, the Japanese presented a deeply modernized crossover (but still of the 3rd generation) - it was the first to try on the new corporate “X-shaped” design, acquired improvements in the interior and received a hundred other improvements.

The large 3rd generation all-terrain vehicle debuted in February 2015, and went on sale in the summer (in the USA). The car lost its brutal appearance (trying on a “fashionable corporate outfit”), received a comfortable interior and became more technologically advanced in all respects.

The subcompact SUV was first presented in the fall of 2014 at the Paris auto show, and four years later its updated version debuted there. This five-door sports an expressive design, a wide choice of versions and a good level of equipment.

This compact SUV debuted in the fall of 2013 and has been updated several times since then. The car has a beautiful appearance, an elegant interior and a rich list of equipment, and under its hood there are both gasoline and diesel engines.
