How to get car insurance correctly

How to get an MTPL policy

1. How and where to apply for an MTPL policy?

Compulsory insurance policy for civil liability of vehicle owners. “>Everyone must have an MTPL policy. The owner can be both the owner of the vehicle and the driver driving the vehicle (for example, by proxy). A driver who drives a vehicle due to official or labor duties cannot be the owner.

">owner Except:

  • Vehicles registered in foreign countries with a “green card”;
  • Vehicles whose maximum design speed is not more than 20 kilometers per hour;
  • Vehicles not intended for driving on public roads and (or) not subject to state registration;
  • Vehicles that do not have wheeled propulsion systems (those with tracked, half-tracked, sleigh and other non-wheeled propulsion systems) and trailers for them;
  • passenger car trailers belonging to citizens;
  • all military vehicles, except buses, cars and trailers for them, and other vehicles used for support.

">vehicle. But not only the owner, but also the driver driving the car with his consent can register it with the insurance company (the owner of the vehicle in this case will be entered in the “Owner” column, and the person who entered into the MTPL agreement will be entered in the “Insured” column).

You must take out insurance within 10 days from the moment you become the owner of a car, motorcycle or self-propelled equipment, but definitely before registering the vehicle with the State Traffic Inspectorate or Gostekhnadzor - without a long-term MTPL policy, it simply will not be registered. Then you need to either renew the contract with the selected insurance company in advance, or enter into a new one with another.

To enter into an MTPL agreement you will need (by agreement with the insurance company you can present both originals and electronic copies of documents):

  • application (filled out in person at the insurance company);
  • passport or other identification document of the vehicle owner;
  • a document confirming the registration of the vehicle specified in the application (vehicle passport or self-propelled vehicle passport, vehicle registration certificate or car registration certificate), except when it comes to a new vehicle. After you register your equipment permanently and receive a technical passport, you will need to notify the insurer that the vehicle is permanently registered with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate or Gostekhnadzor;
  • a document confirming the ownership of the vehicle (if the vehicle is not registered) or a document confirming the ownership of the vehicle (if the vehicle is leased);
  • a driver's license or a tractor driver's license (tractor driver) of the vehicle owner and, if necessary, persons who will be allowed to drive (only for obtaining closed insurance);
  • diagnostic card with a mark on passing a technical inspection (for vehicles older than 3 years) or a certificate of passing a technical inspection of tractors, self-propelled road-building and other machines;
  • previous compulsory insurance policy (if available).

Documents must be submitted to a licensed insurance company. All legally operating companies are united in the Russian Union of Auto Insurers. You can check the license status on its website. There you can also find out which companies are undergoing bankruptcy or reorganization proceedings.

Everything about insuring a used car after purchase

Car market players are interested in the question of how to get insurance when buying a car. At the same time, novice drivers often confuse CASCO and OSAGO. What do you need to know about insurance when buying a used car? We will talk about this in this article.

What is OSAGO

OSAGO is a compulsory insurance document. Thanks to it, compensation occurs for damage caused to another car or the health of a passenger. Without a policy, it is impossible to register a car with the traffic police, drive it and pass a technical inspection. Therefore, car insurance after purchase is an important matter that cannot be ignored.

If you have compulsory motor liability insurance, in the event of an accident for which you are at fault, the insurance company that issued the policy to you will pay the victim money. In the opposite situation, if the person responsible for damage to your car in an accident has a compulsory motor liability insurance policy, you receive the money. In both cases, car owners do the repairs themselves. It is worth noting that with MTPL you insure yourself against financial failure rather than your car. Because insurance only covers damages to those injured by you in an accident.

What is CASCO

CASCO is voluntary car insurance. With CASCO insurance, you insure your car against theft and damage. In the event of an accident, regardless of whose fault it is, the insurance company will repair your car. If the car is stolen or destroyed, the company will pay its cost.

The fundamental difference between CASCO and MTPL is that with the first policy, the insurance company will undertake the repair of your car. In the case of OSAGO, you will do the car repairs yourself!

How much does car insurance cost?

Cost of OSAGO

The presence of compulsory motor liability insurance is mandatory under the legislation of the Russian Federation. Therefore, the price for it is the same for all insurance companies. The cost of compulsory motor insurance depends on the following factors:

  • Type of vehicle;
  • Region;
  • Physical age of the policyholder and driving experience;
  • Motor power;
  • Number of accidents.

For young drivers, the cost of compulsory motor liability insurance will be higher due to age and experience, for experienced drivers - due to accidents, if any. The cost of compulsory motor insurance varies from 12,000 to 23,000 rubles.

OSAGO payment

To receive payment, the victim must contact the insurance company of the person who caused the accident. It is worth considering that if you are at fault in an accident, the payment price will be taken into account in accordance with the wear and tear of the car (its age and mileage).

The threshold for payment of compulsory motor liability insurance is 400,000 rubles. If the cost of damage turns out to be higher, then you have the right to recover the difference through the court and the culprit of the accident.

CASCO cost

Unlike MTPL, CASCO independently sets the price for the policy. On average, it is 4-12% of the market value of the car. You may be refused if you do not meet the company's requirements at the time of concluding the contract. Let's say the age of the car has been exceeded. The contract also specifies the amount of compensation or repairs. CASCO cost formation indicators include:

  • Age and experience of the driver (the younger, the more expensive);
  • Vehicle storage conditions;
  • Family status;
  • Alarm installation;
  • Number of accidents;
  • Vehicle age;

The latter is worth focusing on. The older the car, the higher the CASCO price will be. The risk of breakdown is greater for a used car, and repairs are no cheaper than repairs for new cars.

Advantages and disadvantages of CASCO

  • Peace of mind for the car for the year ahead;
  • Receiving funds or repairs in the event of an accident or unforeseen situation, regardless of the circumstances.
  • High price. 4-12% of the car’s market price can cost a pretty penny;
  • Prices not regulated by law;
  • Reluctance of insurance companies to issue used cars;
  • Delaying payments;
  • Recording each case with the traffic police to obtain a certificate;

CASCO saves your nerves, but spends money on it. Big or not - it's up to you.

The nuances of used car insurance

Taking out insurance for a used car has its own ways to save money. Now we’ll tell you how to insure your car and stay on top of the money.

OSAGO for a used car

When buying a car, the new owner must have time to take out insurance in his name 10 days after purchase - this is exactly the period set by law. It is worth considering that in order to transport the car for technical inspection, you will need to either call a tow truck or ask the previous owner. But after the MOT you don’t need to take the car anywhere; you can apply for an insurance policy via the Internet, which will save time. To obtain insurance for a used car, you can choose any insurance company.

CASCO for a used car

Obtaining CASCO insurance is a more labor-intensive and complex process. Not all insurance companies want to take used cars under their wing. Most companies are ready to take on foreign cars with wear and tear up to 10 years and domestic cars up to 7 years. Such cars can be insured under new car programs: the cost of insurance is more expensive, and the likelihood of a breakdown of a new car is significantly lower. An important nuance: when choosing the type of damage payment, you can choose two:

  • Taking into account wear and tear;
  • Excluding wear and tear.

In most cases, it is more profitable to take a payment without taking into account depreciation for used cars. The price of the policy may be 15% more expensive, but this will save costs in the future. If the insurance takes into account wear and tear, then from the moment the contract is concluded, the wear and tear that the car received will not be paid. In the event of an accident and when assessing the damage, the company will pay the amount, deducting from it the percentage of wear and tear that has been added since the conclusion of the contract. This way, you won't get all the money it costs to repair your car. It is also important that for used cars CASCO uses repairs at service stations, where the wear and tear of the car is never taken into account.

How to save on CASCO

There are several ways to reduce the cost when purchasing CASCO insurance.

    • Take advantage of the insurance deductible. With it, payments for theft and destruction of a car will be full. Another advantage of this option is that it does not take into account the driver’s experience and age, which is suitable for beginners.
    • Wear and tear accounting. When purchasing CASCO insurance, taking into account wear and tear, its price will drop by 15-20%.
    • If you choose not to pay for repairs, the insurance company will only pay the cost of new parts, and it’s up to you to decide where to repair the car. This option allows you to reduce the CASCO price by 40-50%.
    • Repairs from an unofficial dealer will help reduce the cost of your CASCO policy by 20%. But please note that in this case the official dealer may deregister the car.

It’s quite possible to save on CASCO, but it won’t be superfluous. If you want to sleep peacefully and have an ace up your sleeve in case of an unforeseen situation, CASCO will definitely not harm you, and may even save your finances. For the rest, compulsory motor liability insurance will suffice.

Compulsory car insurance: why do you need to take out an MTPL policy, where and how can you get insurance?

OSAGO is compulsory motor third party liability insurance. The MTPL policy provides compensation for losses caused by the insured driver to another vehicle (VV), as well as to the life and health of passengers in it. The policy applies to the entire territory of the Russian Federation.

OSAGO protects the insurance owner from unexpected expenses. In the event of an accident, the insurance company of the person responsible for the accident assumes the costs of compensating the losses caused to the injured party (within the maximum amount established by Law No. 40-FZ).

If both drivers are found to be at fault for the accident, then payments will be made by both companies. If the situation is controversial, then the case is considered in court, and the court determines the degree of responsibility of each driver and the ratio of the amount of payments.

Administrative liability is provided for driving a car without a valid MTPL policy. The driver faces a fine of 800 rubles (Article 12.37 of the Administrative Code).

Applying for insurance, step-by-step instructions

To obtain an MTPL policy, a car owner will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Select an insurance company . You should seriously approach the search for a suitable insurer, since the less reliable the company, the less likely it is that it will fulfill its obligations in the event of an insured event.
  2. Calculate the cost of an insurance policy . Insurance companies take into account basic rates and additional factors. For different drivers and different vehicles, the amount of the insurance premium can vary significantly. On the website of each insurance company there is a calculator for calculating compulsory motor liability insurance.
  3. Collect the necessary documents and submit an application to the insurance company to obtain a compulsory motor liability insurance policy.
  4. Sign an agreement with the insurer.
  5. Pay for MTPL policy.
  6. Keep the issued insurance form and proof of payment.

How to choose an insurance company?

It is necessary to carefully approach the choice of an insurance organization, since it will be the one who will be entrusted with the obligation to compensate for losses that may be caused to third parties as a result of an accident.

Motorists should pay attention to the following factors:

  1. License . The insurance company must have a valid license to issue MTPL policies.
  2. Union of Automobile Insurers (RUA). You should check whether the insurer is part of the RSA. If a company participating in the union is declared bankrupt, then RSA assumes obligations to pay funds.
  3. Experience in the insurance market . Newcomer companies cannot boast of high reliability, so you should first familiarize yourself with the company’s history.
  4. List of services provided by the company . The wider the list of services provided, the greater the number of clients a financial institution has, and, accordingly, the risk of bankruptcy is reduced, but this does not apply to all cases.
  5. Financial condition of the insurer . It is necessary to familiarize yourself with the company's reporting. As a rule, successful insurers do not hide such information, posting it on the official website. If the information could not be found, then the company is probably trying to hide data that could ruin its reputation.
  6. Reliability rating . The rating of the insurance company can be found on the Internet. Don’t forget about the reviews of people who have previously used the services of the insurer.

Documents required to purchase an MTPL policy

To apply for an MTPL policy, you will need the following documents:

  • valid diagnostic card;
  • vehicle registration certificate (VRC) or vehicle passport (PTS), if the car has not yet been registered with the traffic police;
  • the car owner’s passport , as a rule, he also acts as the insured;
  • driver's licenses of persons authorized to drive a vehicle (required if a limited OSAGO policy is issued);
  • application for conclusion of an agreement between the policyholder and the insurer.

Responsibility for providing reliable information when drawing up a contract lies with the policyholder.

What affects the cost of insurance?

The Central Bank of Russia determines the values within which insurers can set the cost of an MTPL policy. In each individual case, the price of insurance depends on the following factors:

  1. Vehicle power . A car's power factor increases with the amount of horsepower in it. Can range from 0.6 to 1.6.
  2. Region of registration . Each region of the country has its own coefficient. The larger the city, the higher the probability of a car getting into an accident, and, accordingly, the higher the coefficient.
  3. Age and driving experience . The older and more experienced the driver, the lower the coefficient. People who have recently driven are more likely to be involved in an accident. For such drivers, the cost of the policy will be higher.
  4. Participation in an accident . For accident-free driving, insurers provide a discount on compulsory motor liability insurance. In the absence of road accidents, its size increases every year.
  5. Number of drivers allowed to drive a car . If the policy is issued without restrictions (the vehicle can be driven by anyone with a driver’s license), then an increased coefficient of 1.8 is applied upon registration.

Procedure for obtaining compulsory motor insurance

There are two ways to get insurance:

  • contact the insurance company office in person;
  • submit an application for an electronic policy on the insurer’s website.

In the first case, the policyholder with a package of necessary documents must contact the insurer to conclude an agreement. After signing the insurance agreement, entering all the data and paying for the policy, the policyholder receives the following documents:

  • the original MTPL policy on government-issued letterhead with the signature and seal of the insurer;
  • two copies of the accident notice;
  • insurance payment receipt.

If an electronic policy is issued, then to receive it the policyholder will need:

  • go to the official website of the selected insurance company;
  • register and log into your personal account (phone and email address required);
  • Among the options offered, select “issue a new OSAGO policy”;
  • fill in all the necessary data (information about the car and its owner, and, if necessary, enter the data of the drivers who will drive the car);
  • calculate the cost of the MTPL policy;
  • pay for insurance;
  • wait for the insurer to send the policy and save the received OSAGO form;
  • print insurance.

The electronic policy is printed on plain paper and does not have any security elements. You can check the authenticity of the form by the series and document number on the official website of the RSA.
