Restoring license plates on a car after theft

Number plates were stolen from a car - what to do?

There are several types of car scams. One of the simplest criminal schemes in this area is the theft of a registration plate.

Current legislation prohibits any movement in a vehicle without established license plates. Knowing this situation, attackers in most cases rent rooms with a ransom demand. Number plate theft occurs for various reasons, but it always causes significant trouble for the car owner.

Reasons for theft

The theft of license plates is a crime in which selfish motives are revealed. There are various purposes for committing such an act, but each of them creates significant problems for the owner of the license plate.

  • Demand for ransom. It is the most common type of such crime. The implementation scheme is as simple as possible. The attackers remove the license plates from the car, and in return leave a note on the windshield containing an offer to return the license plates for a fee. After fulfilling all the demands of the attackers and transferring the money, there is no guarantee of the return of the numbers. As a result, the victim may be left without money and license plates.
  • The desire for revenge. Quite often there are cases where the number was stolen due to revenge on the owner of the car
  • Customs cleared cars. Criminals steal license plates if they need to drive a car across a border where they have not cleared customs. Having installed the stolen license plates on the car, they drive it with them to its destination. All fines for violations committed during the transportation of the car will be sent to the owner of the license plates.
  • To commit another crime. If a vehicle is needed to carry out a planned illegal act, criminals often use a car with license plates installed on it, twisted from another vehicle.
  • Hooligan actions. Stealing a license plate can be a common crime. In this case, the crime is committed for the thrill, and not for monetary gain.
  • Collecting. A crime of this nature can be committed in relation to a rare or unique registration mark.

Number return options

If the numbers are stolen, the injured party has two options to legally resolve this issue.

Making a duplicate

If the license plates are stolen, the car owner must take measures to restore them. You can return your previous registration numbers by restoring them and obtaining a duplicate. There are a sufficient number of private companies operating successfully on the territory of the Russian Federation, which, for little money in the range of 2000 - 3000 rubles, will produce a new set of registration numbers on their own.

Before contacting the order executor, you must make sure that he has valid accreditation. Both individual entrepreneurs and legal entities can perform such work. To put a duplicate number into operation, the customer will be asked to provide:

  • Driver's license. As an alternative, a passport of a Russian citizen may be presented.
  • Original certificate confirming the registration of the vehicle.

This method is used by motorists who do not want to lose the registration number they have received. This method of solving the problem under consideration carries one danger. If license plates removed from a vehicle are indicated in any criminal case, the citizen on whom they are registered may be held liable.

New car registration

In this case, you will have to obtain completely new registration numbers. To do this, you need to contact the nearest traffic police department and act in the following order:

  1. Fill out and submit a statement about the theft of car registration numbers.
  2. Pay a state fee, the amount of which is approximately equal to the cost of producing duplicate license plates.
  3. Submit another application requesting a new registration of the car. The document must indicate the actual reason for the application: the loss of license plates under unclear circumstances. It is recommended to indicate exactly this wording. If the statement contains the word theft, the license plates may not be issued until the investigation is completed.

Completed applications must be accompanied by a whole package of documents, which includes:

  • Identification document of the applicant.
  • Driver's licenses.
  • Valid OSAGO certificate.
  • A document confirming the fact of registration of the vehicle.
  • PTS.
  • If the attackers removed only one number plate from the car, you must attach the remaining number to the documents.

How to find stolen numbers

If the injured party wants to find the stolen plates and bring the criminals to justice, it is necessary to send a statement to law enforcement agencies, indicating that the license plates were stolen from the car.

The circumstances of the incident are described with a request to initiate a criminal investigation. Investigative authorities, upon receiving such a request from a citizen, are obliged to initiate a criminal case. In practice, such cases are practically never solved. On the day of registration of the received application, the registration number indicated in it is entered into the database of wanted signs. If after this the loss is not found within 10 days, the case is automatically closed.

If the attackers put forward ransom demands, then the decision to agree with it or not fully lies with the injured party. Even after paying the established ransom amount, the attackers may not return the numbers.

Moving without numbers: possible sanctions

Stealing license plates from a car is a criminal offense. But in this case, the injured party may also be punished. The current version of the traffic rules certainly prohibits driving a car that does not have at least one license plate. If a traffic police officer detects such a violation, the citizen will face one of the following penalties:

  • A fine of 5 thousand.
  • Ban on driving and deprivation of driver's license for a period of 3 months.

There is only one way to avoid punishment - do not drive a car without registration plates. Receiving a notification about registering a statement about missing numbers will not save you from sanctions.

Possible actions of the attacker and the victim

After the theft of numbers, an attacker who committed a crime for personal gain will have two possible scenarios:

  • Leave a note for the car owner. In it, the criminal indicates a phone number to call to return the registration plates.
  • Find out the phone number of the car owner yourself and call him with ransom demands.

If numbers are stolen, the likelihood of their return is extremely low, even if all the criminal’s demands are met. The best solution in such a situation would be to seek help from law enforcement agencies. As evidence, you can provide a note left by the attacker, the phone number from which the criminal called. If it is possible to record a telephone conversation in which the attacker demands a ransom, this will be the best evidence.

Actions recommended by the police

If license plates are stolen from a car, almost no one knows what to do in such a situation. For persons against whom the crime in question was committed, law enforcement agencies have developed a set of actions to help find criminals and stolen car signs:

  1. Carefully examine the area where the crime was committed.
  2. Pay special attention to places where license plates removed from a car may be hidden. This could be a container with garbage, trash cans, bushes, a pipe and other places. Often, criminals do not take the stolen number with them, but hide it in the immediate vicinity of the crime.
  3. Assess the weather conditions at the time of the crime. Snow provides an additional opportunity to hide numbers, but at the same time, traces on it can make it clear how the attacker moved.
  4. Roughly imagine the trajectory of how the attacker walked away from the car from which he removed the registration numbers. Most often, during the retreat, criminals hide the stolen license plates.
  5. Find out from neighbors and possible witnesses who may have seen the crime process or the actions of the attacker.

Categories of cars most often subject to such crimes

No car is immune from attacks by criminals on its registration numbers. The following vehicles are in the maximum risk group:

  • Cars with “nice” license plates. The attackers are counting on the owner of a car with such signs to agree to pay the ransom.
  • Cars arriving from abroad or another region of the Russian Federation.

In the latter case, being not on his territory, the owner of the vehicle agrees to pay the amount requested by the attackers in order to return it home without any problems.

What to do if 2019 license plates are stolen from your car

A car left in the yard often becomes a target for intruders, be it extortionists, hooligans or vengeful neighbors. A very unpleasant, but quite common morning surprise for a car enthusiast is the theft of license plates. Finding yourself in such a situation for the first time, any car owner will not immediately clearly understand what to do if the license plates are stolen from the car: the first instinct will be to call the mobile number left by the scammer. However, this is not the best, and far from the only option.

In a situation where license plates have been stolen from a car, what the owner should do will help him understand a clear idea of who needed it and why. It is possible to avoid unnecessary formalities and procedures by analyzing the circumstances of a particular theft.

Why are numbers stolen?

License plates are stolen for the following purposes:

  1. Receive a ransom for license plates. The greatest likelihood of suffering from such scammers is among owners of cars with “thieves” plates - the presence of such suggests that the owner is not indifferent to the beautiful combination of numbers and that he will not be stingy in returning them for a monetary reward. The attackers will definitely provide the victim with the opportunity to contact them, but whether it is worth contacting them, and what to do when the license plates are stolen from the car, is up to him to decide;
  2. Use license plates for criminal purposes. After car license plates are stolen, criminals have the opportunity to use them as cover for committing any illegal acts. In this case, there is no hope of returning the stolen property, but what to do when license plates are stolen from a car for criminal purposes and how to protect yourself will be discussed further;
  3. Add an interesting piece to your own collection of license plates. For these purposes, old, rare license plates are selected. Thieves are often content with just one sign and remove the signs very carefully;
  4. The last and quite common reason that you should think about if the license plates are stolen from your car is simple retribution for the inconvenience caused by you or your car. You should look for the intruder nearby - he probably lives in your yard.

It is not always possible to quickly determine for what purpose the license plates were stolen, and in half the cases the owner of the car will never know about it. But the question of what to do when license plates are stolen from a car requires an immediate decision.

In practice, quite often the search for stolen license plates within a radius of 300-400 meters from the scene of the incident is successful: attackers do not always manage to unhinderedly deliver the stolen items to their destination.

Drivers should also remember that driving without a front license plate entails many times more responsibility than driving without a rear license plate. Therefore, if thieves left the rear plate intact, it is advisable to move the remaining license plate to the front when driving this vehicle.

In 2019, the process of restoring a stolen license plate, as before, is, first of all, a choice between two options (duplicate or recreation of the number in the MREO). As before, the cost of both methods is quite comparable - about 2 thousand when using the first method, 2.5 thousand when choosing the second. At the same time, restoration (or rather, re-registration with the receipt of a new license plate, different from the previous one, in the MREO) will certainly take a slightly longer period of time, however, it will also relieve the car owner from unnecessary worries about unreasonable involvement in criminal matters.

What to do if your numbers are stolen?

More recently, car enthusiasts, answering the question of what to do when the license plates were stolen from a car, could imagine a long series of formalities that were completely incommensurate with the scale of the loss. Modern legislation gives relative freedom of action in this case.

Undoubtedly, an important and mandatory step that every driver needs to take when a license plate is stolen from his car is to file a statement with the police in order to protect himself in case criminals commit a crime using stolen plates. A notification ticket issued by the police will allow you to:

  • avoid a fine for driving a car without license plates to the place where you receive new ones;
  • contact the traffic police for re-registration or issuance of a duplicate earlier than the ten-day period allotted to the police to investigate your application.

A few more important rules in case the license plates are stolen from your car, what to do at the stage of contacting the police:

  1. There is no need to succumb to the persuasion of employees to refuse to write an application. Often, citing the obvious hopelessness of the situation, the police convince the applicant that the appeal is pointless; however, the essence of this action is not to find the thief, but to record the very fact of theft;
  2. It is worth paying attention to whether a protocol has been drawn up indicating all the circumstances of the incident.

But after contacting the police, the issue remains unresolved. Next, we will try to reveal all aspects of the situation when license plates were stolen from a car, what to do? 2017 brought car enthusiasts the opportunity to choose from two options for solving the problem.

Ordering duplicate numbers

If before legislative innovations, a duplicate license plate was considered a false license plate, and its use was subject to sanctions, including the loss of the right to drive a car, but currently the law does not require mandatory re-registration to obtain a new plate.

Choosing this path has a number of advantages for drivers whose car license plates have been stolen, including:

  1. Efficiency – the procedure takes from 10 minutes to 1 hour;
  2. Relatively low cost - about 2,000 rubles;
  3. A small package of necessary documentation:
  • Passport or license;
  • Certificate of state vehicle registration;
  • Notification coupon.

The only drawback of the procedure can be seen only by very suspicious owners whose car license plates have been stolen: thieves will still be able to use a license plate with an identical combination of numbers for criminal purposes.

Car re-registration

Registration of a car involves the issuance of completely new license plates and the simultaneous transfer of stolen ones to the category of wanted ones. Meanwhile, the re-registration procedure itself means the same as registering a car with the traffic police. In 2019, this will require going through the following stages:

  1. Write a statement about the loss of registration plates;
  2. Pay the state fee (2,500 rubles);
  3. Submit the following documents:
  • Citizen's passport;
  • Vehicle passport;
  • Car registration certificate;
  • Insurance policy;
  • Remaining license plate, if available.

How to prevent repeat theft

Not a single motorist is insured against getting into a situation where the license plates have been removed from a car. In addition, similar problems await the owner of the car in the event of loss of license plates while driving on bumpy roads. Preventing such situations is the first thought that occurs to the driver after he received new registration plates. There are several simple rules and methods that will help you avoid troubles associated with restoring license plates:

  1. Purchase of anti-vandal retention devices. This type of frame is fastened in four places using hidden bolts; it will not be easy to deal with them even for a craftsman who has a screwdriver;
  2. Securing numbers with bolts or self-tapping screws. Such a precaution will already complicate the removal of the sign, and if you use a bolt with a secret or a screw with a non-standard hat, the attacker will definitely have a hard time;
  3. The best place to park a car is on illuminated streets where there are residential buildings or office buildings with installed CCTV cameras;
  4. An alarm system that responds to actions with license plates will also protect the car from intruders.

By taking care of the safety of his car while it is parked on the street, a citizen protects himself not only from unnecessary time and financial costs, but also from various types of fraud on the part of unscrupulous persons. In 2019, purchasing reinforced license plate mounts will be much cheaper than restoring them after the rude actions of criminals (after all, by removing the license plate, they can damage other parts of the car). In addition, theft of property of any scale is a serious test for the owner’s nervous system; it is better to prevent it than to eliminate the consequences.

Instead of a conclusion, let us remind you of the responsibility of drivers for driving a car without registration plates: the absence of one of them is punishable by a fine of 500 rubles, two - 5,000 rubles. On our portal you will find competent answers to all your questions, and you will also be able to get legal advice free of charge online regarding the actions of the car owner in the event of theft or loss of license plates.

What to do if license plates are stolen from your car

Losing a car's license plate number is always fraught with problems for the motorist. You can lose your license plate either as a result of driving fast or due to theft. Therefore, many car owners are concerned with the question of what to do if license plates were stolen from their car in 2017.

Procedure for missing numbers

When a motorist notices the absence of license plates on his vehicle, he needs to understand under what circumstances they could have disappeared. The license plate may either be lost or stolen. Wondering if the license plate from the car was stolen, what to do, the owner of the car is already preparing for a lot of trouble. The theft of license plates really creates a lot of problems for the car owner.

Loss can occur during fast driving on a bad road, when the plate mount is damaged, and so on. Therefore, if the absence of a sign is noticed immediately after the car was parked, and before the trip both signs were in place, then they were simply lost.

As a rule, only one is lost. The way out of this situation is simple - order a copy (duplicate).

In the case where the car was left in the parking lot with registration plates, and then the owner discovered that they were missing, then it can be argued that a theft has been committed.

The purpose for which it was carried out may be one of the following:

  1. Receiving ransom.
  2. Use of registration marks for illegal purposes.
  3. Replenishment of the collection of rare signs.
  4. Revenge for the inconvenience caused.

To obtain a ransom, as a rule, criminal license plates are removed. They leave a piece of paper with a phone number for the owner of the car. In this case, there is a chance to find the loss not far from the car, in any secluded places, garbage containers or on the playground.

Criminals usually do not take the signs with them so that they cannot be charged with theft.

There are several recommendations for finding signs stolen for ransom:

  1. The location radius is most often limited to the parking area or yard.
  2. The sign can be folded or rolled up, so you need to inspect all possible hiding places.
  3. In winter, it is also necessary to inspect the snowdrifts; in addition, the likelihood of finding traces of an intruder increases.
  4. Ask relatives and neighbors to help in the search

What you should not do is call the phone number left by scammers. They will ask you to transfer the required amount to an account, usually an electronic wallet. There are no guarantees that the property will be returned to the owner. In almost all such situations, the motorist loses both license plates and money. In addition, cooperation with scammers only contributes to the development of such “business”.

If the theft was committed to use the signs for criminal purposes, they will not be returned to the owner. You can protect yourself by immediately reporting to the police. Then criminals will not be able to use license plates, as they will be wanted.

The purpose of the theft is not always possible to determine, and until recently the procedure for obtaining numbers was quite difficult. The question arises: license plates were stolen from a car, what to do in 2017? It was this year that the process of obtaining license plates in this case was simplified.

It is important to remember that you cannot drive a car without license plates or with only one. This is punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 rubles.

Number recovery

There may be several answers to the question of what to do if the license plate from a car is stolen:

  1. Order a duplicate.
  2. Re-register the vehicle.
  3. Restore registration plates in MREO.

Making a duplicate has always been considered a less expensive procedure compared to the process of obtaining new signs. To order a duplicate, you can go to the website of the relevant commercial organization, present the registration certificate for the car and pay for the production.

However, it is better not to use this procedure if the owner is sure of the theft. There is no guarantee that the removed signs will not be used for fraudulent purposes, for example, to create a duplicate car. In order not to receive fines later for minor violations, the owner of the car should contact the police department and report the theft of license plates. Then you need to go to the MREO to get new registration plates or restore the previous ones.

Re-registration of a car occurs according to a special procedure. If the government was stolen. license plate number from the car, what should I do? First you need to report the incident to the police department. This will help prevent thieves from using stolen registration plates, as they will be on the wanted list.

Until recently, applying to the traffic police for re-registration was possible only after a 10-day period during which the police conducted an investigation.

You must pay a state fee to issue a license plate and vehicle registration certificate. You must contact the traffic police department with a receipt of payment and a set of necessary documents. Documents that will be required include:

  1. A written statement about the loss of numbers.
  2. Owner's ID.
  3. Vehicle registration certificate.
  4. Certificate of its registration.
  5. OSAGO policy.

After re-registering the car, its owner will receive different registration numbers. This procedure was the only possible answer to the question: license plates were stolen from a car, what to do in 2016.

In the new year, car owners have the opportunity to obtain a copy of the missing license plate from the MREO. To do this, you also need to contact law enforcement agencies and receive a special notification coupon. It will help you not only get to the traffic police quickly without waiting for the end of the investigation, but also avoid receiving a fine if a car without license plates is seen on the road.

To obtain duplicates from the MREO, you will need the following documents:

  1. Identification.
  2. Vehicle registration document.
  3. Notification coupon.

The advantage of this type of number recovery is the complete formality of the procedure and its speed.

Registration of documents and production of duplicates takes place within an hour.

If the owner of the car still prefers to get completely different numbers, then this year he will not have to present the car itself to re-register the car.

How to avoid theft

In order not to look for an answer to the question of what to do in 2017 if license plates were stolen from your car, and to protect your license plate, you must follow the following recommendations:

  1. Buy special anti-vandal fastenings. They are attached in four places using hidden bolts.
  2. To attach the number, use bolts and self-tapping screws, if possible, with a non-standard head, this will complicate the task for those who decide to remove the number, since such a plate cannot be removed with a regular screwdriver.
  3. Park your car on well-lit streets.
  4. Park, if possible, where there are CCTV cameras.
  5. Special alarm associated with license plates.

All these methods will help against hooligans and not very experienced attackers. However, those who decide to get a specific license plate cannot be stopped by such methods. A complete guarantee of room security is impossible to achieve.

Liability for theft

The car owner himself is not responsible for the loss of state license plates. He can be fined or temporarily deprived of his license only for driving a car without a license plate. You can avoid this situation by obtaining a special paper from law enforcement officers about missing license plates. Therefore, if the government was stolen. numbers from the car, what to do - immediately contact the police.

Since 2014, the assignment of a state car number has been subject to liability in accordance with the Criminal Code. The size of the penalty varies depending on the purpose of the theft.

If the theft was committed to obtain a ransom or to commit a serious crime, the offender faces one of the following penalties:

  1. Collection of 200 thousand rubles.
  2. 360 hours of mandatory work.
  3. One year of correctional labor.
  4. One year imprisonment.

If the license plate was stolen by conspiracy by several persons, then one of the more serious penalties :

  1. Monetary recovery of 300 thousand rubles.
  2. Recovery in the amount of two years' income.
  3. Two years of correctional labor.
  4. 480 hours of mandatory work.
  5. Imprisonment for 4 years.

For the assignment of state license plates for the sake of “pampering”, liability is provided under the administrative code. The punishment may be a fine of up to 5,000 rubles. or arrest for fifteen days. All of these penalties apply to those criminals who have been caught but usually cannot be found.

If license plates are stolen from a car, what should you do in 2017? Go straight to the police station and the traffic police. Thanks to the simplified procedure for both re-registration and issuance of duplicate signs in the MREO, getting out of this situation is no longer difficult for motorists.

What to do if license plates are stolen from a car?

Loss or theft of a license plate is a fairly common situation that every driver may encounter. In a trivial situation, if the license plate was poorly secured and fell off after a bumpy road, you can make a duplicate of it. In the case where thieves have worked on the car, restoring the license plate number will be risky. So what should you do if your car license plates are stolen?

Why do people steal numbers?

Attackers may need someone else's numbers for various purposes:

  • committing a crime in a fake car;
  • use for driving non-customs cleared vehicles;
  • creation of double cars with the same characteristics as the owner of the license plate;
  • ransom demand for returning the numbers to the owner.

There are also less criminal situations, such as collecting license plates for collection or revenge from a parking neighbor for taking a occupied space.

It is impossible to remain inactive in any situation where license plates are missing - the car owner may receive fines for other people’s violations or will have to give explanations in a criminal case if a crime is committed involving the license plate.

How to protect your car from license plate theft

To prevent the number plates from being removed, it is recommended to purchase anti-vandal frames, the fastening of which is fixed in four or more places. The cost of such a device is 1000 – 2500 rubles. There are special hidden bolts on the frame, to which there is an individual key, so it will not be possible to remove the numbers by force, and using working tools or a screwdriver will take a lot of time.

Such a frame plays not only a protective, but also a preventive role - knowing in advance that your car is equipped with it, scammers will bypass it so as not to waste time. And this device copes well with the loss of a sign when driving off-road.

Dear visitor!

If you have any questions, you can ask a lawyer for free by phone.

Our lawyer will advise you FREE OF CHARGE.

In addition to using the frame, you can protect yourself in the following ways:

  • secure the sign with bolts or screws;
  • park the car in a well-lit place or within the coverage area of CCTV cameras;
  • install an alarm that will notify you of manipulations with the license plate;
  • leave your car at night in a guarded parking lot.

What liability does a thief face?

Until 2014, there was no specialized article that provided for liability for the theft or removal of license plates. Offenders were charged, regardless of their other circumstances and actions, for fraud, extortion or hooliganism. This happened because the license plates are state property and do not belong to the owner of the car by right of ownership.

Criminal liability for the theft of license plates was introduced in 2014 under Article 325.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - criminals under it face a fine, compulsory or correctional labor, or imprisonment. The term of imprisonment can be up to 1 year if the theft is committed alone or up to 4 years if the act is committed by a group of persons.

However, removing numbers in order to put them on your shelf is not subject to criminal liability. For a crime, it is important that the theft of a sign was done with mercenary intent, for example, for sale in a collection, or implied a special purpose - to commit another serious or especially serious crime.

For all other purposes for which the sign is removed (pampering, revenge on the owner, testing abilities, etc.), Art. 19.37 Code of Administrative Offenses of Russia. According to its sanction, the offender faces from 2 to 5 thousand rubles. fine or 15 days of administrative arrest.

If numbers are missing

When, before getting behind the wheel, you notice that there are no license plates on your car, it is better to call a taxi or go on a trip by public transport. For driving without a license plate, administrative liability is provided in accordance with Part 2 of Article 122 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation and punishment in the form of a fine of 5 thousand rubles. or deprivation of a driver's license for a period of 1 to 3 months.

It is necessary to restore the chain of events, remember how well the numbers were secured and find out whether the sign could have fallen off as a result of the previous trip. If the driving was careful, the number was there before and disappeared only after parking, then it’s worth thinking about. When there are no signs both behind and in front after the car has been parked overnight in the yard, then there are no options - the license plates have been stolen.

Even in case of theft, it is worth spending at least half an hour searching for signs. Thieves often leave a number within a radius of several hundred meters to come back for them later. This is especially common when renting several rooms at a time, for example, in a parking lot.

It's definitely worth spending time on:

  • inspection of the parking area, parking area, yard;
  • search of garbage cans, staircases, bushes, pipes, cracks under garages;
  • during winter - exploring places near the car where tracks in the snow lead;
  • survey of neighbors and grandparents who are often in the yard.

If you are sure that the number has disappeared and no one will use the lost sign (especially in one copy), then you can make a duplicate of it.

Buying license plates or reporting to the police?

Sometimes scammers leave a note after the theft with information on how to contact them and buy the number back. Here the bet is made on the fact that a person may not want to waste time on a visit to the traffic police to change license plates. If the number was beautiful, then the chances of seeing such a note increase, and the amount can be completely different - from 1 thousand rubles to several tens of thousands.

Communicating with the thief and transferring the indicated amount to him does not provide any guarantee for the return of the sign. Moreover, you can lose this additional money and end up going to the police with two problems - so you need to go to law enforcement immediately after the theft.

When filing a theft report, you must provide the time and place where your vehicle was parked and the last time you actually saw your sign. After the application is accepted, fraudsters will not be able to use the license plate for their own purposes, since it will be wanted.

Procedure for obtaining a duplicate

The police, traffic police and any other government bodies or institutions do not make duplicates. There are many entrepreneurs and companies that can make a duplicate of a lost sign. The cost of such a procedure will be around 2-3 thousand rubles. To produce a copy, you need to provide the owner’s passport, car registration certificate or its PTS.

The law does not prohibit such operations for making a duplicate. Nowhere is the rule stated that in case of loss of the license plate, mandatory re-registration of the vehicle is required, and installing a duplicate is contrary to the regulations.

The only negative that the owner can expect is if someone finds this number and uses it to commit illegal actions. Then the negligent car owner will have to answer for the actions of others.

It is definitely recommended to make a duplicate in the case where the license plate is simply damaged - registering the car again and getting new plates does not make much sense here.

Car re-registration

You can re-register a car without changing the license plates, but you won’t be able to get a license plate without re-registration. On the other hand, this completely protects the owner of the car from the consequences of the use of signs by third parties.

To register again and receive numbers, you need to do the following:

  • file a police report about the theft of a license plate;
  • pay the state fee (2000 rubles for license plates, 500 rubles for a registration certificate, 350 rubles for entering data into the PTS);
  • make an appointment with the state traffic inspectorate and get new license plates.

Filing a report of theft involves entering information about the numbers into a special database, which makes their further use impossible.

In the event that the owner nevertheless took the risk of driving the car to the police or, by a lucky chance, discovered a loss not far from the police station, then after reporting the theft, he should take a coupon or similar document accepting the application, which can protect him on the way home when stopped by a patrol .

To visit the traffic police, you can use the appointment through the government services portal and come at the designated time.

You must have the following documents with you:

  • application for changes due to loss or theft of numbers;
  • passport;
  • PTS;
  • vehicle registration certificate;
  • insurance policies;
  • receipts for payment of state duty.

If one sign has disappeared, then it is advisable to take the second one with you. The procedure for re-registration, obtaining new certificates and state numbers usually does not take more than one day.
