The traffic rules do not clearly state where this or that sign should be hung. It only states that they must be placed “at the rear of motor vehicles.” The most important rule is that since this sticker performs a warning function, it should be clearly visible, but not interfere with the driver himself. Teachers and instructors at driving schools advise hanging such signs in the upper left or right corner of the rear window.

Thus, we come to the conclusion that the traffic rules and the basic provisions for the admission of vehicles to operation do not regulate where exactly this or that sign should be glued. In addition, no one has the right to issue fines for the absence of spike signs, a disabled person, a deaf driver, or a novice driver.

Penalty for missing a spike sign

Thus, until 2019, the “Spikes” sign had to be installed . This was required by traffic rules.

In addition, from April 4, 2017 to December 8, 2018, the absence of the “Spikes” identification mark was included in the list of faults for which the operation of vehicles is prohibited:

7.15 1 . For printing, it is better not to use plain paper with a density of 80 g/m2, because... the sign will be short-lived. It is better to take photo paper with a density of 120 - 150 g/m2.
A sign intended for black and white printers should be colored yourself. To do this, take a red felt-tip pen or pencil and paint over the edge of the sign.
To attach the sign, it is best to use a suction cup (or 3 suction cups on the corners of the triangle). If you stick the sign with tape, then after it is removed there will be a mark on the car glass. In addition, a sign stuck with tape is unlikely to be reused.

Finished signs quite often have dimensions that do not comply with traffic regulations. It should be taken into account that it makes no sense to install a small sign, because... it will be legally considered that there is no sign on the car. As a result, the sign will simply block part of the view through the rear window, but will not provide any benefits.

Where to put the “Spikes” sign according to the rules?

From April 4, 2017 to December 8, 2018, traffic police officers could impose a fine for the absence of the “Spikes” sign under Part 1 of Article 12.5 of the Administrative Code:

1. Driving a vehicle in the presence of malfunctions or conditions under which, in accordance with the Basic Provisions for the admission of vehicles to operation and the duties of officials to ensure road safety, operation of the vehicle is prohibited, with the exception of malfunctions and conditions specified in parts 2 - 7 of this article, -

entails a warning or the imposition of an administrative fine in the amount of five hundred rubles.

Please note that this article deals with the presence of malfunctions or conditions under which the operation of vehicles is prohibited. Paragraph 8, which until 2019 referred to the installation of the “Spikes” sign, refers to such malfunctions.

Therefore, the punishment for the absence of the “Spikes” sign was a warning or a fine of 500 rubles .

Passing a technical inspection without the “Spikes” sign

In 2020, during a technical inspection, the operator does not check for the presence of the “Ш” sign on the vehicle.

Why do you need to glue it, the Thorns sign?

According to the 2018 traffic regulations, the sticker must be visible to all drivers on the road, so each side of the triangle with the Ш sign should not be less than 20 centimeters, and the framing border should not be less than 2 centimeters.

The sign “Ш” is needed and has the following meaning:

In addition to these troubles, while such a car is moving, the traffic police inspector has every reason to stop it, since formally there is a possibility of passing a technical inspection with significant violations.

It is also worth remembering that if you get into an accident in which a car with studded tires and the absence of the Spikes symbol was driven from behind, there is a certain risk that the accident will be recognized as a mutual one.

Such scenarios can ultimately cost the car owner dearly.

Where to put the Spikes information sign?

The location of the symbol Ш on a car is not clearly regulated by the rules for operating cars:

According to clause 8 of the Basic Provisions, this sticker should be placed simply on the back of a passenger vehicle, i.e. not necessarily so that it is clearly visible to other drivers driving behind. Depending on the make of the car, the location of the sticker can be adjusted.

Experienced driving school instructors advise sticking a similar marking at the top of the rear window - according to them, in this place the symbol is best visible to other road users. You can choose any side for gluing - the main thing is that the symbol is clearly visible and does not interfere with the view of the car enthusiast.

In the case of a tinted rear window, it would be better to place the sticker on the outside. Transparent glass does not prohibit and allows its placement from the inside. It would be better if it was located where the glass is cleared of the adhering snow mass with a wiper or brush. It can also be placed on the body or bumper.

This sticker can be purchased ready-made at the store, or you can make it yourself on thick photo paper. To stick the symbol, the best solution would be a suction cup, since after removal it will not leave marks on the glass, unlike adhesive tape. You should know that ready-made stickers in stores often do not comply with the conditions of traffic regulations, and installing a sign that is too small will not have legal force, but it will be quite difficult to fine the driver for non-compliance. In addition, ready-made stickers with an adhesive layer cannot be reused, and noticeable adhesive marks will remain on the glass after use.

Penalty for missing the Ш sign?

What is the penalty for not having a sticker? Many people are concerned about the question: is there a fine for not having the Spikes sign?

The legislation, in accordance with clause 8 of the Basic Provisions, requires that the Studs sign be placed on cars equipped with studded tires.

A light sign in the form of an equilateral triangle with rounded corners.

The length of each edge is 20 cm or more.

The width of the red border around the entire perimeter of the triangle is at least 2 cm and no more than 10% of the length of one side.

Fill background is white.

The color of the letter “Ш” is black.

The location of the letter “Ш” is central on the bottom side of the triangle.

The “Spikes” sign can be bought at almost any car dealership, service station or even in a large supermarket.

Some motorists prefer to make such marking elements with their own hands. When choosing materials, it is better to give preference to high-density photo paper. You can use a regular suction cup as a fastening.

Until recently, the absence of a notification sticker, non-compliance of its size with GOST, or failure to comply with placement techniques was punishable at the legislative level. As for the sign sticker itself, you need to remember the following:

Since the sign should be placed only for the winter (it is not needed in the summer), you need to keep in mind that the sign pasted in the fall will have to be removed in the spring. But this may not be so simple and can even lead to damage to the paint or the glass itself on the car if the wrong place is chosen.

There are two types of signs - with glue on the front side of the sign and with glue on the back side of the sign. Accordingly, those signs that have glue on the front side are glued from the inside of the car, those on the back side are glued to the outside of the car.

Signs are produced by many manufacturers; for many of them, the adhesive base can grip too tightly, which will create a lot of difficulties when peeling off the sign in the spring.
