How to change the color of a car in the PTS

How to properly register a car color change at the traffic police in 2019

When purchasing a car, registration is required. The characteristics, color, model, etc. are entered into the PTS. Repainting a car entails a change in the data. Changing the color of a car in 2019 is legally impossible without notifying the traffic police.

What car body painting options are subject to mandatory registration?

Changing the color is permissible, but if the color scheme of the body is indicated incorrectly in the documents, the owner faces a fine. You cannot use colors that are similar to the tones of firefighters, ambulances, or police. It is also not allowed to paint over the place where the VIN code is placed.

You can’t just go and change the color of a car.

You need to change the data if the color has changed completely, for example, the car is now yellow instead of blue. Tone identification is carried out only by an inspector, so you need to contact the authorities in any case. Only the employee decides whether the color has changed and whether a new STS and PTS will be required. If the car will not be driven, there is no need to register new data.

Before painting a car, you need to obtain permission from the traffic police. If the car is registered to another person, you need to show a power of attorney when re-registering. Any transaction in a car, including painting on behalf of another person, is acceptable.

Even the presence of an airbrush must be registered with the traffic police

The registration procedure for a color change states that within five days after the change, the owner must contact the State Traffic Inspectorate. Registration and making changes take the same amount of time. The owner brings documents and writes a statement. Copies of papers are required to be provided.

Procedure for registering a car color change

Changing the color of the car must be registered with the traffic police. After paying a fee of 850 rubles, you need to come to any branch. The purpose of the visit is indicated in the application. At the end of the document the signature of the owner and the traffic police officer is placed. Changes will be made to the PTS, but a new STS will be issued.

Result of car inspection after painting

If the car is domestic, less than 3 years old, it is checked to see if it is wanted. Foreign cars will be checked if the car is under 15 years old.

They put a mark on the application and you can go to inspection in the parking lot. The employee checks the license plates using the PTS. A readable VIN code is a must. If the inspection passed, this is indicated successfully in the application. Next, the driver submits a package of documents and after a while new certificates will be received. How long the procedure will take depends on the queue.

Is it possible to arrange everything through the government services website?

At public services you can apply to change your data. When you register on the website, you receive a 30 percent discount.

Step-by-step instruction

To apply you need:

  1. Log in to your personal account. The user must be registered and identified.
  2. Submit an application to change your data. The service on the service is called “change of vehicle data”. The request is recorded on the front side of the form, and information about the owner is recorded on the back side. If the documents are submitted by a representative, you need to fill out the appropriate fields.
  3. Pay for services by bank transfer or mobile phone.
  4. Choose a time to visit the branch. Electronic recording saves time on re-registration.

Checking a wanted car

To pay, it is more convenient to open the application on your smartphone. You need to come to the State Traffic Inspectorate office with documents. The employee checks the car in the database, and documents are also reviewed. If there are no problems, put a mark in the application. The numbers that are indicated on the body are checked in the parking lot.

List of required documents

To change information you will need to provide the following documents:

  • PTS;
  • OSAGO;
  • identification document;
  • a receipt indicating that the state duty has been paid;
  • STS.

The owner pays for entering new data into the PTS. This is 350 rubles. You will have to pay the same cost for issuing STS.

An insurance policy and other documents are required to obtain a permit.

What happens if changes are not registered?

If the owner has not documented the change of car color with the traffic police, in 2019 he faces a fine of 500 - 800 rubles for the primary violation. If repeated, then 5,000 rubles or deprivation of the certificate.

Every driver has the right to repaint a car, but the law must also be followed. There are only five days to complete the re-registration and if it is not followed, the owner will be fined. The new color will not match the tone on the PTS, so registration of this information is required. After changing your car, you need to contact your insurance company. The data in the policy is also changed.

Are you planning to radically change the color of your car?

Registration of documents for repainting at the traffic police

It happens that a motorist needs to change the color of his favorite car. There are a lot of reasons: you’re tired of the old paint job, the car is damaged and needs repainting. But how to do that? After all, the technical passport of the car clearly indicates the color of the vehicle along with other characteristics. Let's find out.

In what cases do owners change the color of their car?

There are many reasons for this. Some want to stand out in traffic and apply airbrushing, stickers, camouflage, their company brand, advertising; others want to repaint a car purchased on the secondary market.

Changes in the exterior of a vehicle are very ambiguously regulated by law. So, even a small drawing on the hood can be equated to this change. The decision in this situation must be made by a traffic police officer, but his opinion may be subjective.

Nuances of appearance

Repainting a car has some pitfalls that drivers should be aware of:

  • Vehicles cannot be decorated in the colors of special service vehicles.
  • It is prohibited to paint over the area where the VIN number is indicated. Also, other markings on the vehicle must not be damaged. Changes may lead inspectors to believe that the car is listed as stolen.

Even more questions arise when the driver decides not just to repaint the car one color, but, say, several different ones, repaint only partially, or apply airbrushing or a sticker. Let's figure out what to do in these situations.

Partial repainting

Repainting can be considered such if the new color occupies no more than 50% of the surface area of the car. In such a situation, no new documents need to be prepared. However, this rule is not clearly stated anywhere, so some inspectors may issue a fine, considering repainting illegal. To avoid possible problems, it is better to consult your local traffic police department.

In this topic we should also discuss applying color film to a car. Formally, it does not in any way affect the shade of the car, but it slightly changes its appearance. The question of whether something needs to be changed in the PTS in this case is again best discussed with the inspector.

One color or several?

If the owner decides to repaint the car one color, then no problems should arise. The whole procedure follows a standard scenario (it will be described below) and is not fraught with great difficulties.

When using several colors, you need to choose those combinations that are permitted by law (for example, you cannot use combinations of white and red, since these are the colors of the ambulance). When registering, you must include in the documents all the shades used, indicating the technique for applying them. If there are very similar colors (emerald and light green), then it is enough to simply indicate green once.

Airbrush for cars

Previously, in the decrees of the state inspection, which related to changing the appearance of the car, the word “painted” was always written, which indicated the use of paint. Now it has been changed to “inflicted.” The essence of the new rule is quite ambiguous: it turns out that even any mark can be counted as a change in the exterior.

In any case, if you decide on any of the available types of repainting, or on applying individual signs, it is better to first contact the traffic police, where they will tell you whether registration is required or not. Even if you painted the car the same color after the repair, you should still consult with an inspector. This will help avoid fines and other troubles.

Is repainting legal?

Repainting a car and otherwise changing its appearance is a common thing and is fully permitted by law if done in accordance with the rules.

Painting can be done in almost any car service, although the price for such a pleasure is decent and can reach 100 thousand rubles. This cost includes the paint itself, various manipulations to improve the coating and final polishing. It is advisable to choose a service with high-quality equipment and qualified craftsmen so that the work lasts longer. It is better not to paint it yourself, since without proper preparation all sorts of defects can form on the surface.

A change in the appearance of the vehicle must be accompanied by a change in the data in the technical documentation. If this is not done, the owner will face a fine.

The amount to be paid for such a violation is determined by Article 12.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (driving a vehicle not registered in the prescribed manner) and ranges from 500 to 800 rubles. – for the first time, 5000 rubles. with possible deprivation of driver's license - for repeated violation. True, there is a little trick that will allow you to avoid paying out. If the inspector leaves you and sees a repainted car without registration, you can say that you are just about to go to get the paperwork done (by law, this procedure is given five days). But an experienced employee can recognize a lie and demand confirmation of repainting from a car service center.

It is important to understand that after paying the fine, you still need to sort out the documents.

When can you not resort to registration?

The color of the body significantly changes the appearance of the car, making it unrecognizable, which means that such a change must be made in the documents. However, there are two cases when you can do without this:

  • If the new color is very similar to the previous one. For example, a car was painted scarlet but became burgundy. These two colors fit the designation “red”, since the documents record not the shade, but the color.
  • If the arrangement of colors on the body has changed. For example, the vehicle had a black roof and a white body, but now it’s the other way around.

In all other situations, a visit to the traffic police is strictly necessary.

Registering a new color: how and where to do it?

You can complete the necessary registration in two ways: directly through the traffic police or via the Internet, through the portal www.gosuslugi.ru. The time it takes to pass through all the authorities in both cases may be different, it all depends on the workload of the inspectors.

What papers do you need to collect?

It is best to start the registration procedure by collecting the necessary documentation. In addition to your passport, you will also need:

  • PTS.
  • STS.
  • Insurance policy (CASCO or OSAGO).

The list of documents must be accompanied by a state fee, which must be paid in advance. Also, do not forget to take the necessary documents from the car service center where you had the repainting done.

This list can be expanded if the car belongs to a specific organization. Then you will need documents such as a representative’s passport, company registration certificate.

To change the color of the car you will have to pay two state fees. One is for issuing a new certificate (its cost is 350 rubles), the second is for making changes to the technical passport (also costs 350). Please note that until January 1, 2019, there is a 30% discount on these state fees (when issued through government services).

Algorithm for registration in the traffic police

The procedure for a motorist when repainting his vehicle is as follows:

  1. The first step is to write a standard application for vehicle registration. In the appropriate section you need to indicate: “color change”. The application can either be printed and filled out at home, or obtained from the nearest branch.
  2. Feel free to go to the traffic police with your documents ready. First, the car will be checked to see if it is wanted. This procedure is carried out for domestic cars up to 3 years old and for foreign cars up to 15 years old. Then there is a check of the correspondence of the numbers.
  3. Afterwards, if everything is in order, the inspector puts the necessary stamp on the application and issues new documents to the owner.

As soon as all the stages at the traffic police are completed, you should go to the insurance company to re-register the papers.

You need to go to the state road safety inspectorate within the first five days after repainting your car. It is prohibited to drive a car without registration, unless, of course, you are driving it to the traffic police department.

Registration of painting through the government services website

It is also possible to complete the required documentation using the Internet. The advantage of this method is the 30% discount on state fees and a faster, on average, registration process. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Log in to your personal account on the website.
  2. Find the desired section using search.
  3. Generate an invoice for payment of duties.
  4. Pay the bill using bank transfer.

Afterwards, in any case, you need to go to the traffic police and continue registration there.

In conclusion, we can say that in case of any change in the appearance of the car (be it repainting or airbrushing), you should contact the traffic police and fill out the appropriate documents. To do this, as we have seen, is not at all difficult.

How to get a car repainted in a different color at the traffic police?

If a motorist buys a car, it must be registered and undergo a technical inspection . This is not an easy path, but it cannot be avoided, it cannot be abandoned.

A vehicle becomes a legal participant in traffic in this way. The technical product passport includes the year of manufacture, its technical characteristics, and color.

After some time after using the car, the car owner may wonder whether it is possible to repaint the car in a different color in Russia if he wants to change the boring color.

A color change may be necessary if the vehicle is damaged and the owner decides to tint the damaged areas and at the same time change the color.

Let's find out the procedure for registering a car color change with the traffic police in 2019. What is needed for this?

The law prohibits the painting of private cars in the colors of certain government services:

  • law enforcement;
  • firefighters;
  • Ambulance.

Other shades are used without restrictions, one or many.

When painting, you need to leave part of the body untouched (where the VIN number is stamped). This measure will help avoid further problems in the traffic police.

If the car is repainted in one color, there should be no problems. But if there are several colors, and you want to do a small drawing or airbrush, the process can turn into a complex procedure.

The traffic police regulations list the primary colors allowed for use in repainting a car . But when combining several colors, the documents list all the colors, as well as the method in which the painting was done.

Appendix 1 “Regulations on PTS” to the Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of June 23, 2015 N 496/192/134, paragraph 32 (http://www.consultant.ru/cons/cgi/online.cgi?req=doc&base=LAW&n= 217414&fld=134&dst=100026,0&rnd=0.9051911729604187#0) states that the passport indicates one body color: white, yellow, brown or the name of other colors.

If several are applied, indicate the combined one (multi-color is allowed), the main colors are listed.

But it is not always possible to list all combinations. How then can you legally change the color of your car?

Partial repainting

You can consult with the traffic police officers on what percentage the car can be repainted . There is no need to pay a fine for small airbrushing if the main color remains the same and the admixture of the new does not exceed 50% of the old.

But there are no regulatory documents confirming this situation. And the decision on the legitimacy of the car owner’s action is made by the inspector, and it is not always objective.

Previously, the provision included the word “painted” . It was suitable for a vehicle that had been completely or partially repainted.

But the word “painted” was replaced with “applied.” This includes any films, stickers, airbrushing. And this situation makes the fine for airbrushing, which, moreover, occupies a large area of the body, realistic.

For this reason, it is better for the owner of a pasted car to come to the traffic police and register. If it turns out that registration is not needed, you will no longer have to worry about this issue.

A full paint job is not the only way to change the appearance of your car . This is only necessary if the old coating is significantly damaged and the body needs to be protected from corrosion. In other cases, you can limit yourself to color film.

This option does not take much time, but it is better to talk with the traffic police about changes to the PTS.

The color of the car has remained the same, and this can be proven, but color film often radically changes the appearance of the car, then the owner may have problems with the traffic police.

Each change in vehicle color is accompanied by changes in the registration documentation. Painting is part of the information that is provided when registering a vehicle, and in importance it is on a par with the make of the car, license plates, and year of manufacture.

All information during the vehicle registration procedure is checked during an external inspection. The fine for an unregistered change in the color of a car is regulated by Article 12.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation:

  • 500-800 rubles;
  • repeated violation - 5,000 rubles or deprivation of rights.

You need to contact the traffic police within 5 days after the color change.

But paying the fine does not relieve you from the further need to make changes to the documents. If a traffic police inspector catches you repainting an unregistered car, you can try to say that you repainted the car just a couple of days ago and were already going to the traffic police to register the changes.

But if the inspector asks to show evidence (any documents from the car service center where the painting was done), you will have to pay a fine.

Car owners who decide to make changes to their vehicle often have a question: “What should I do with the documents if I want to repaint the car a different color?” Let's look at how to re-register the color of a car in the traffic police.

Algorithm for registering changes

It is difficult to say how difficult and long the procedure for changing the color of a car will be. Much depends on the workload of traffic police officers. But you can make an appointment in advance on the Public Services portal.

What documents are needed to register changes in a car?

The car owner must prepare the following documentation:

  • your passport;
  • OSAGO policy;
  • vehicle passport;
  • vehicle registration certificate;
  • receipt of payment of state duty.

To change data, the car owner will have to pay the following state fees:

  • issuance of a new registration certificate, since changes are not made to an existing document: 350 rubles;
  • 350 rubles for making changes to the registration certificate.

The state duty can be paid with a 30 percent discount until January 1, 2019.

How to register repainting online and get a discount? To receive a discount you must:

  • an application to the traffic police for changes (due to a change of color) is submitted through the State Services Portal;
  • log in or enter your Personal Account on the website;
  • the department issues an invoice for payment;
  • choose non-cash payment (MasterCard, Visa, Mir card, Webmoney wallet or from a mobile phone (Federal operators).

If all conditions are met, the car owner will receive a discount. You can also use the service’s mobile application to pay.

The application must indicate “register due to color change.”

The car owner comes to the nearest traffic police department with a ready-made package of documentation. If the car is less than three years old (applies to domestic vehicles), it will be checked to see if it is wanted. Foreign cars under 15 years old are also checked.

If you filled out an application using State Services, you can also make an appointment there and appear at the State Traffic Inspectorate at the time and date of your choice. If you go to the traffic police without an appointment, you can fill out an application on the spot.

The traffic police officer will check the car against the database and also check the documents. If there are no shortcomings, he puts a special mark on the application. Then he proceeds to inspect the vehicle in the parking lot. The compliance of the numbers indicated on the body and in the technical passport is checked.

If the outcome is successful, you need to contact your insurance company. There you also need to renew your insurance policy.

We remind you that it is better to leave the area with the embossed VIN unpainted.

Remember: it is prohibited to resort to changes in the design of the vehicle if the procedure damages or affects the vehicle markings (VIN number, body, engine, chassis numbers and other information).

The identification marking is applied to the car only once; it cannot be restored even at the factory. They may suspect that by repainting the VIN number you decided to disguise the fact that the number has been interrupted.

Then the car may be detained. Usually the body numbers are interrupted after the car is stolen.

But if the traffic police refuses to make changes for this reason, you need to complain to the Main Department of the Traffic Police.

How to repaint a car in a different color? The color of the car is one of the characteristics that is indicated in the vehicle passport.

If you decide to change it, after repainting you need to contact the traffic police and register the changes. This is not the most complicated and time-consuming procedure, but you will have to pay a state fee.

Painting is not the last way to change the appearance of a vehicle . Painting will provide protection against corrosion; this is a rather expensive procedure.

More often they resort to it if the old paintwork is damaged. Now you can cover your car with colored film.

Some drivers calmly cover the car with fragmentary film or apply airbrushed images to it, without even thinking about going to the traffic police and registering the changes.

In fact the color remains the same. But the appearance of the vehicle undergoes some changes, which complicates the work of traffic inspectors if the car violated traffic rules or was stolen.

On the one hand, color film does not physically change the color of the car. On the other hand, it sometimes changes its appearance completely.

You will have to prove that you are right many more times, and your efforts will not always be crowned with success. The decision on the legality of the actions of the driver who has taped the car and has not registered the changes will be made by the traffic police inspector.

Before painting, there is no need to obtain official permission from the traffic police to change the color.

If repainting was carried out according to the law, no one has the right to ask the driver for such permission during an inspection of the car.

I can’t find which item to choose in government services

I'm going to buy a car, according to the documents it's gray, in fact it's black, it hurts on top, the glasses and openings are untouched, will I be able to register the car with the traffic police when re-registering it in my name and change the color?

Why does the driver have to prove when he painted? What about the presumption of innocence? Let the inspector prove it.

Well, you’re really confusing things, why should you prove anything to him if the color is indicated on the registration documents, but you repainted the vehicle? That's all the proof!

I want to buy a car, but according to the title the color is blue, but in fact it is repainted black. How to register with the traffic police after purchasing a car? Will there be problems with this? It used to be that paint had to be inspected.

Send the seller to reissue the title to change the color. You must buy a car with full compliance with the documents. Otherwise, you’ll get a hemorrhage at the first screw

Especially for Alex00. What kind of fuckers are you talking about? If by law you can ride for up to five days without re-registering your docks. The man asks that he is not obliged to prove anything, this is the inspector’s interest.

Changing the color of a car in the traffic police - how to change the color of a car in documents

There are many reasons why a car enthusiast thinks about changing the color of his car at the traffic police:

  • Desire to renew old car body paint to protect against rust, especially for cars older than 10 years;
  • Repair after an accident, in which chips and scratches formed on the body, which are centers of corrosion;
  • The driver’s intention to stand out from the crowd of passing cars with airbrushing or a beautiful logo of his own company;
  • Personal preferences of the driver, for example after buying a used car.

The nuances of the procedure can be found by referring to regulations and laws. If you deviate from the requirements of legislative acts, the vehicle will not pass technical inspection or traffic inspectors will most likely refuse to register the painted car and issue documents.

Is it possible to repaint the car and register it?

Repainting a car in any other color is allowed, but how can changes that have occurred be approved by law? After all, there are a number of restrictions that must be observed. It is prohibited to paint your own car in the colors of special purpose vehicles, such as ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, and various departments.

It is necessary to leave the part of the car body where the VIN code is located unaffected. The measure will protect against further difficulties with the traffic police. This identification number is applied to the car only once; even the manufacturer does not have the right to change or restore the number.

Painting the number will raise doubts about its originality; they may suspect that the VIN code has been changed deliberately, the vehicle will be prohibited from operating, and the car will be sent for examination. Cunning criminals try to beat these numbers when they successfully steal a car.

File a complaint with higher management if the MREO officially refuses to register color changes.

The “Regulations on PTS” describe that the documents of any car indicate the color: blue, pink or any other color.

When there are many colors on the body, a multi-color shade is indicated; a combined color is indicated through a hyphen (for example, silver-bright blue).

Various color options

How is it possible to change the color of your favorite car? There are various painting options: both partial and complete, airbrushing.

There are difficult situations when it is impossible to describe the color, as an option when performing multi-colored airbrushing on the body. The term “painted”, which appeared in the law, has now been replaced by the synonym “applied”; the term describes drawn drawings, gluing parts of the body with film, and pasted symbols. When the driver has doubts about the color change, it would be useful to go to the MREO to clarify the situation and, if necessary, register the changes made in the existing passport of your four-wheeled friend.

Full coloring

Typically, full-body painting is used when the condition of the old paintwork is unsatisfactory and there are pockets of corrosion. If the color changes to a single color, there will be no difficult dispute with traffic police officers.

When changing the color of a car into three or four colors at once, it is prohibited to allow combinations of shades prohibited by law (colors associated with special vehicles). If the choice fell on paint of similar tones, for example, grass, emerald and pistachio, the tone is indicated as green.

Partial staining

According to inspectors, it is allowed to change the color of your iron horse, provided that it is no more than half of the main color of the car.

At the same time, in the database of regulatory documents there are no facts that confirm this position. And the opinion about the legality of the motorist’s actions regarding the changed part of the body color is not always objective on the part of the inspector.

Legal laws previously included the concept of “painted,” which meant a car that was partially or completely repainted. Now it has been replaced by the synonym “applied”, which refers to the application method when gluing any symbols using the sticker method, pasting body parts with colored film or airbrushing. Motorists, after changing the color of their car, are advised to go to the traffic police department to register these changes.

Performing airbrushing

Making drawings on the body of a car is not prohibited by law, so there is no need to go for permission. The procedure in which the re-registration of the color of a car in the traffic police with airbrushing applied to it will be exactly the same as with repainting.

As soon as the car is airbrushed, the color will be described as “combined.” It is necessary to register the application of airbrushing within 5 days, otherwise the motorist will face a fine.

Steps to re-register a repainted car in the traffic police

Changing the color of your car is undoubtedly registered with the traffic police, because it is necessary to change the existing documentation. Body color is an important piece of information that appears in the documents for the car.

How quickly do you need to submit the necessary documents to the MREO, after changing the color of your vehicle? The law requires a motorist to do it within 5 days.

If we turn to the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, then Article 12.1 talks about penalties for unregistered data on color modifications:

  1. Punishment from 500 to 800 rubles. in the form of a fine;
  2. After a second violation, up to 5,000 rubles, up to and including deprivation of your driver’s license.

It is imperative to keep in mind that a paid fine for a violation does not relieve you of responsibility for recording modifications in the MREO. A law enforcement officer who stops you on the way will immediately notice the discrepancy between the real color and the one indicated in the STS, and suddenly he will understand that the car has been repainted.

Of course, some lie and claim that the car changed its color quite recently, and they did not have time to go to the traffic police. The traffic inspector may ask for supporting documents certifying that the body was repainted in a paint shop, along with the time of completion. Provided that there are no such papers, there is absolutely no way to escape the fine.

Package of documents

It is difficult to say exactly how long the procedure for changing the original color of the car body and issuing new documents according to the law will take from the traffic police. Thanks to modern technologies, you can register for an appointment in the “Public Services” portal, but it is difficult to say how long you will have to wait. This depends on the number of newly registered cars in the district MREO.

Documents for the car that will be required when applying:

  • Compulsory MTPL insurance policy;
  • STS and PTS;
  • A receipt from the bank confirming the paid fee;
  • Passport of the Russian Federation of the person being applied for;

An indispensable condition is the payment of a mandatory amount to the state budget for the application, in the amount of:

  1. 350 Russian rubles. for modifications to the PTS;
  2. 500 Russian rubles. for modifying the STS.

Until the beginning of next year, pay with a good benefit of a 30% discount, following the algorithm of actions below:

  • Submit an application to the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate through the state portal of State Services for changes in documents;
  • Log in to your Personal Account via a computer or from a smartphone application;
  • Find the invoice for modifications;
  • Select a payment method (pay by plastic card, electronic money, through a mobile operator account).

Changing color in PTS

With a fully collected set of papers, go to your district MREO. The inspector is obliged to check the car for possible theft using the traffic police’s own database: foreign-made cars manufactured up to 15 years ago, Russian-made vehicles up to 3 years old.

If you make an appointment through “Public Services”, you can choose the day of your visit and a convenient time. When going without an appointment, you must fill out an application.

The employee will check the correctness of the package of documents provided for the vehicle. When everything is completed correctly, a mark is placed on them. Next, the car is inspected at a specialized parking lot. They check the correctness of the state number, VIN code, and changed paint color in the documents.

After this, as soon as the traffic police has re-registered the color of the car, immediately contact the newly received package of papers to purchase a new MTPL insurance policy, with a different body color.

How much does it cost to change the color and register everything with the traffic police?

When to calculate the total amount, how much you need to pay after repainting the car a different color and completing all the necessary registration steps; applying to the MREO with ready-made documents, paying the state duty, obtaining new ones, replacing the MTPL policy, it will cost 850 rubles.

By registering the color change of your car with the traffic police in a timely manner, subsequent expenses for paying fines will be avoided. The amount of 850 rubles is charged as a state duty for changing the STS and the color of your own car in the PTS.

If you do not contact the authorities and do not change the color of the documents, the fine is 500-800 rubles.

Modification of body paint in documents according to current rules requires mandatory re-registration with the traffic police, because the appearance of the car changes very significantly.

Following the algorithm of actions described in this article, there should be no difficulties with registration with the MREO, submission of a package of documents, payment and receipt of ready-made documents. There is no need to be afraid to ask traffic inspectors; they will answer any question related to the legal preparation of documents.

However, do not forget that if the tone of the car has not changed much and the overall appearance is similar, for example from a grassy shade to emerald, there is no need to change the color in the documents.

How much does it cost to re-register and change the color of a car?

The paintwork of a car performs not only a protective function—it protects the body from corrosion—but also an aesthetic one.

There are certain colors that are in greatest demand:

  • black - prestige, high-ranking officials, deputies and presidents drive such cars;
  • white is the simplest and cheapest; when buying a car you don’t have to pay extra for the color;
  • metallic silver, gray is a very popular shade.

Also, experts predict that fashion will soon change and natural shades will be in great demand: blue, green, brown, coffee, and so on.

If the owner is tired of the previous look and color of his car, he can redecorate it by repainting it. It is not necessary to completely paint the car; you can change the shade of individual body elements. In any case, all these changes need to be legalized - the color of the car must be re-registered with the traffic police, so that traffic police officers do not have suspicions later during checks. This is quite easy to do.

How to change the color of a car?

In principle, there is nothing complicated here, and the procedure itself will not cost too much. You will have to pay the following fees:

  • making changes to the PTS - 350 rubles;
  • issuance of a new STS - 500 rubles;
  • the cost of services is 150 rubles.

It is advisable to check the amount of the duty on site, as it may change over time.

Please note that you need to change the color even if you repainted only some parts of the body, and not the entire car.

During the painting itself, it is necessary to leave all the numbers stamped on the body unpainted, and also leave unpainted those parts where the plates with the VIN code are attached. This is done so that a forensic expert can see that the car was actually repainted from the color indicated in the passport to a new one.

The entire re-registration procedure takes from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the workload of MREO employees. You need to take with you all the main documents:

  • your personal passport;
  • technical passport for the car;
  • registration certificate.

They may also be asked to present a medical certificate and a compulsory motor liability insurance policy in case of any suspicion.

At the MREO office, take a standard application form, fill it out according to the sample and write: “Please register the change in color of the vehicle.” Then enter information about yourself and your car.

If your car is domestically assembled and manufactured less than three years ago, the application must include a resolution stating that it is not wanted. The same applies to foreign cars under 15 years old.

After this, you will be given receipts to pay state fees, which you can pay here or go to another bank where the commission is lower. Then you get in line to be checked by a forensic expert, who will check all the numbers, see if they have been interrupted, and check them against his databases. If everything is fine, the criminologist will put a corresponding mark on the “slider” for you, which, together with the receipts, must be submitted to the same window where you submitted all other documents.

That's all - now all that remains is to wait for the technical passport with the mark “Color change” and a new registration certificate to arrive. From now on, not a single traffic police inspector will have any complaints against you.

According to the law (Order 1012 dated December 22, 2003), changes to the PTS must be made 5 days after painting, since changing the color without re-registration is a violation of the registration regulations. Accordingly, the fine for this violation is 500-800 rubles (5000 or imprisonment for 1-3 months for a repeated violation) in accordance with Code of Administrative Offenses 12.1 Part 1.
