How to restore maritime documents after a long break

Long break from work: how to start all over again?

Situations in life are different, and so are the reasons for a break in work. Some “dropped anchor” in order to raise children, others wanted to realize their business ideas, or had to spend a lot of time on treatment.

But then, one day it turned out that the problems had been solved, the business had gone down in flames during the crisis, health had improved, the children had grown up, and you could return to the crew. And then a sailor who decides to return to the fleet is faced with several problems at the same time, often closing into one vicious circle:

— crewing agencies do not want to talk;

- why does this happen?

It is necessary to take into account the existing situation in the international fleet, where the vast majority of sailors are striving, and come to terms with the long journey of return. Crewing agencies do not want to quarrel with shipowners who believe that a sailor who has not been at sea for more than a year has lost his qualifications. If the agency submits too many candidates for approval to the owner that he does not like, he will simply change the crewing company.

In addition, at this point you will have to take into account that:

— due to the economic situation in Russia, many decided to return to sea;

— due to the fall in oil prices, the offshore fleet has ceased to be attractive for many, and specialists from there also decided to switch to merchant ships.

What do we have to do

If there is enough willpower and the desire to return to the sea is really strong and conscious, then you need to be prepared:

— spend time and money on re-issuing documents, restoring your diploma, and completing all the necessary courses. You need to start by contacting the Maritime Qualification Commission, which has branches in many Russian ports. Its representatives will inform you which documents will have to be re-written and which can be extended by taking special retraining courses for sailors with a long break from sailing. There you will also be able to take exams to obtain certificates;

- deal with all unpaid fines and alimony - otherwise you won’t be able to travel abroad;

— do not immediately count on the best vacancies on the most in-demand ships and destinations. You will have to return with a demotion, and you will have to take advantage of any chance to gain a sailing license, despite the low salary and the non-prestigious class of the vessel. The second mate from Kaliningrad, who has gone through this difficult path, advises: “It is most realistic to apply not to cool well-known crewing companies, but to those that hire “without experience.” It’s sad, but if the break in work is more than three to five years, you have to start all over again. I haven't been to sea for 4 years. Then I couldn’t get a job as an officer anywhere at all. I had to agree to work in Africa and worked there nonstop for 8 months. The second contract was worked there as an OS (sailor). They hired me as an officer through the flight, after additional courses and completing all the documents.”

— communicate for a long time with crewing agencies;

— be ready to take an interview via Skype in English at any time.

How to communicate with crewing agencies

You shouldn’t hope for luck and “maybe it will blow by.” A serious crewing company will most likely ask you all possible uncomfortable questions. And about the reasons for the break in service, and about plans for the future. You may immediately have to take tests on your knowledge of the language and your maritime specialty.

Manager Alla from a crewing company explains: “Crewing employs professionals who know human psychology, they immediately see weak or dubious places in a resume. For example, the fact that a person constantly changes jobs and crewing agencies can indicate his uncooperative character or lack of professionalism. If he cannot provide the originals of some documents, even after his candidacy for a vacancy has been approved, he most likely submitted them to another agency and is waiting for more lucrative offers there. This means that he can set our company up big if, at the last moment before boarding the ship, when all the agreements have already been made and the documents have been drawn up, they suddenly make him a more advantageous offer. Although, if the sailor had said right away - I want a bigger salary or work on a different type of ship - we would have understood and tried to help.”

The vast majority of seafarers who have experience communicating with crewing agencies say that the main thing is knowledge of the English language. And if some companies may ask you to immediately take computer tests, then agencies working with the largest shipping companies may immediately offer an interview in English.

From the personal experience of a second mate from Vladivostok: “Oh, I suffered a lot at this interview! I passed the tests easily, I prepared well. And then the manager came and started asking questions. He asked about everything - what ships he had sailed on, what cargo they had carried, what books he had read. Then he came up with a question: do you like ice cream? He staged a whole interrogation on this topic - why don’t you like it? Have you tried ice cream from such and such a manufacturer? Where did you buy it that you didn’t like? Sometimes words were not enough for me, I supplemented them with gestures and words in Spanish and German. It was funny, but I passed the interview!”

In the specialty, practical questions will be asked; no one will ask you to remember chemistry, physics and other subjects from the university course. Most likely, the questions will be about MPSS-72, safety basics, cargo stowage rules, nautical astronomy, navigation rules, possible actions in critical situations, depending on the position on the ship for which the applicant is applying.

What not to do

On the Internet on forums you can often see both requests and offers to purchase ready-made documents, you can come across questions about where and how to buy fake certificates of sailing license, which crewing company you can pay to get on board the ship, and so on. In addition, according to information from thematic maritime forums, scammers are profiting from those who want to obtain false documents. For them, this is safe - the deceived will definitely not complain about “arbitrariness.”

Many people have to gain a sad experience and learn to respect the law, following the example of one sailor who was never able to return to the fleet: “I needed a certificate of sailing license for the credentials of a sailor on watch. I contacted crewing agencies - they didn’t take me. I found a man, he made a certificate. I completed all the courses, received documents, and sent them to the agency. I waited for almost a month and a half, then I called the agency - and they told me that there was no response from the company where I supposedly worked. All the money and time are down the drain! It was easier to work on some vessel in the port for several months than to get involved.”

Indeed, few people think that if it is discovered that a seaman has “fake documents”, he will not only be removed from the flight, but may be added to the so-called “black list” of the crewing company, his reputation will be ruined once and for all, and a criminal case may also be initiated.

An analysis of the vacancy market and the opinions of specialists from crewing companies shows that today the following are required:

— senior mechanics and assistant mechanics;

- second and third mates;

— sailors and mechanics are required mainly for fishing vessels. There are also vacancies for the auxiliary fleet, but mainly in the Far East.

If a seafarer decides to return to the crew, then this is his choice and he will have to make efforts to carry out his decision. Hundreds of resumes sent out, money spent on obtaining all the necessary documents, several months at sea as a sailor or mechanic - this is the price for the second start of a maritime career. You need to be prepared for this in order to avoid unfounded hopes and subsequent painful disappointments.

Although, sometimes fate or Neptune himself sends wonderful coincidences:

“I worked on the shore and didn’t even think about returning. And when I changed jobs, I had to call my former crewing office; I needed a certificate from my previous place of work. And they offered me to return. At first I thought it was a joke. And now I work on the same ship as before,” says the third mechanic from Taganrog.

And with the third assistant from Sevastopol, this happened: “I was looking for a job for a long time after a break, I just couldn’t go on a flight. I went into one agency, two managers were sitting there, talking about something. I introduced myself, told who and why. They both sit, are silent and look at me so strangely. Then one says: “God sent!” It turns out that they urgently needed a specialist, but they couldn’t find one.”

Don’t be afraid to return; if you have the desire, there will be opportunities! This is clearly illustrated by the example of a former river boat captain: “I decided to leave the river fleet at the age of 45. The first few contracts I worked in places where no one agreed. After four years of life and five contracts, fortune finally turned to face me. Now I’m 54 and I think my life is a success!”

Perseverance, determination and hope have always attracted good luck. Having decided to return to the navy, you must either go to the end, achieving your goal, or not take on overcoming the difficulties that lie ahead at all.

How to restore maritime documents after a long break

Popular questions:

How to go on a flight after a long break? How to remove the restriction on steam turbines using LNG?

Good day.
I watched almost all the videos with great interest, although I am no longer a beginner.
It would be interesting to hear your answers to the following questions: - How to go on a flight after a long break (often discussed on forums and remains unanswered, I once went through this stage)
- The question that interests me at the moment is how to switch to mechanics (to example 3) from LPG to LNG.
How to remove restrictions from a work diploma on steam turbines. I haven't found an answer on the forums yet. Sincerely, Dmitry Gavrilenko, 3 Eng.

Burn Media responds:

Dmitry, hello!
Although with a delay, I am answering you:
Regarding the long break in work and subsequent departure on a flight.
Crewing companies, as you know, do not want to hire seafarers who have had a break in work for more than 12 months. For some reason unknown to me, it is believed that during this time on shore the sailor has lost the skills necessary for his work. This is pure absurdity, but we have to put up with it. The most important thing you need to remember: after a break, under no circumstances agree to leave with a demotion and try not to lower the engine or, in your case, the power of the gas turbine unit.
In fact, in this case there is a more lenient attitude towards the rank and file and junior officers than towards the TOP-4, because it is generally problematic for the first group to go on a voyage, and for the second it is believed that the same is true.
If a top officer stays too long, then a label is put on him that he cannot go on a flight because he is a bad professional. There is no definite recipe here, but as a piece of advice, be sure to take certificates of navigation with reviews from the ship (sometimes they are not issued, but you insist, in the end, print it out yourself, put the ship’s seal, if possible, and then sign for the CE or the captain, no one will check it anyway).
This summer, the MLC 2006 convention comes into force in Ukraine, according to which (as some crewing companies are already doing) it will be prohibited to provide feedback on the work of seafarers in one form or another. Therefore, the only way to confirm your positive characteristics is a certificate with reviews. If, for some reason, your break was more than two or three years, then you will have to look for work on a par with those who have never worked at sea. You don’t even have to try to get into large companies - go straight to small companies, perhaps even Ukrainian or Russian, they are ready to take people even after long breaks, if you are under 40 years old and do not suffer from alcoholism. The salary for a 3E position would be around $2000 in this case. The first thing you should do is contact the companies where you made the last contracts; sometimes people are returned simply after talking with the superintendent.

Now about steam turbines. As far as I know, currently in Ukraine not a single university provides training under this program and, accordingly, does not include this course in the academic diploma. Because of this, if you currently live in Ukraine, then I do not know of any way to obtain a working diploma with access to steam turbines.

By the way, Soviet-style diplomas indicated this course, so if you received working documents on the basis of an old Soviet diploma, then this question would not have arisen at all.
By the way, many new LNG with “diesel” engines are already being built, so this problem will not be acute soon.

How to restore maritime documents?

Sometimes a sailor may face a terrible misfortune in which his work documents are lost or severely damaged. In such cases, it is necessary to declare the loss and invalidity of the papers, and then begin to re-register them. You can find out how to restore maritime documents lost under certain circumstances in the line below.

What is needed to restore documents?

Firstly, if important papers are missing or stolen, you should immediately report this to the relevant authorities and disseminate information about the loss of documents in the media. Secondly, you should not expect the documents to be returned; it is better to immediately begin procedures for their restoration.

It is worth noting that the restoration of maritime documents is a time-consuming and labor-intensive procedure. If anyone today can buy a diploma or certificate from a vocational or secondary specialized educational institution and immediately get a job using it, then you will not be able to buy maritime documents. Firstly, this is a whole package of documents. Secondly, almost all maritime papers have a limited validity period, and also mutually confirm and complement each other. Below we present for you the most common maritime documents.

One way or another, when recruiting for a team you will need:

  • Seaman's passport;
  • GMDSS Certificate;
  • Professional “crust”;
  • Certificates of maritime specialties;
  • Certificates for certain types of vessels;
  • Marine diplomas.

Not every document from this list can be restored. Some of them will have to be designed from scratch. Things are easiest with various certificates. They will probably even give you duplicates without any problems. With diplomas everything will be a little more complicated. In some cases, it may be necessary to retake courses and confirm qualifications.

To restore certain papers, notarized copies of certificates from the police, fire department or lost property office are often required. In this case, it all depends on the reason for the loss of documents, but making several certified duplicates of certificates will not harm you.

In the traditional vein, you should apply for restoration of docks at the place where the originals were issued.

What is the easiest and fastest way to restore all papers?

Regardless of which documents you have lost, our organization will help you restore them as quickly as possible, while completely eliminating the need to endure a series of tedious bureaucratic procedures. Having connections in the country’s main Captains and other management structures, we have the opportunity to help you, as well as make it as easy as possible to obtain new and restore documents.

To clarify all the current nuances, order a call back from our center right now. A professional consultant will contact you within 20 minutes and try to clarify the situation.

It is also worth considering that our company offers you not only to restore, but also to re-issue (if necessary) any maritime documents according to a simplified scheme. In some situations, this approach may cost you less than the official one, and this is not to mention its technical simplicity .
