What does the road sign glasses mean?

Types of road signs

Content

Road signs vary in shape and color. This way you can distinguish their type. Each group includes signs that are similar in meaning.

There are 8 types of road signs in total:

  • prohibiting;
  • warning;
  • priority signs;
  • prescriptive;
  • special instructions;
  • informational;
  • service;
  • with additional information.

Let's look at how some differ from others, and what signs are included in each group.

Prohibiting

As the name of the group implies, the signs prohibit the driver from performing any action: passing, turning, overtaking, accelerating, stopping. All prohibition signs are round in shape.

The fines for each sign are different, depending on the situation. For example, entering a closed area under a “brick” is punishable by a fine of 1 thousand rubles for violating the instructions of the sign. And for driving under a “brick” into the oncoming lane, your license will be taken away for 2-4 years.

Cars that have turned on special signals and flashing lights can ignore prohibition signs. The validity of the signs ends at the nearest intersection or at signs that cancel previously introduced restrictions.

Warning

Warning signs are triangular in shape, white with a red edge. The only exceptions to this rule are signs indicating railroad crossings and turning directions.

The requirements of warning signs cannot be violated because they do not prohibit anything. The purpose of these signs is to warn the driver of approaching danger. For example, about the narrowing of the road ahead, the possibility of animals entering the road, slippery roads and dangerous turns.

Such signs are installed 50-300 m from the danger, depending on where it is located - in the city or on the highway.

Priority signs

These road signs explain who should be the first to cross a road intersection or other difficult section of the road. Violation of such a sign at intersections will result in a fine of 1,000–1,500 rubles.

Signs explaining priority are made in different shapes and colors. They do not obey the general typing rule. For example, the sign with the main road is made in the form of a yellow diamond with a white edge, and the “Give way” sign is an inverted white triangle with a red edge.

Priority signs also include signs warning the driver about approaching an intersection with a secondary road, signs regulating the priority of passing a narrow path, etc.

Mandatory signs

As a rule, prescriptive signs are made in the shape of a circle. Pictograms are most often depicted on a dark blue background. They allow traffic: “arrows” before crossing roads, a sign indicating the entrance to a roundabout, signs indicating pedestrian or bicycle paths.

Prescriptive signs do not impose restrictions, but, on the contrary, require the performance of a specific maneuver: they show the direction, speed and type of transport that can continue moving.

Signs of special regulations

Markers with special requirements combine several types of signs – informational and permitted. Pedestrian crossing signs show where pedestrians can cross the road, and where drivers need to slow down and be especially careful. This category also includes highway exit signs, public transport-only zones and public transport stops.

All signs are square or rectangular in shape and may be blue (arrows, reversing or one-way traffic), green (motorway entrances) and white (special restricted areas).

Information signs

Information signs include blue squares indicating permitted turns, a parking sign, underground pedestrian crossings, signs indicating dead ends, traffic patterns, etc. In addition, these are also signs with the names of cities, villages and streets. In cities they are made in black letters on a white background, on highways - white letters on blue, and on highways - white on green.

Service marks

Service markers show where the nearest service station, gas station or rest area is located. Within the city they are installed directly next to the object, and on highways - from 400 m to several tens of kilometers. There are also signs indicating gas stations with sockets for electric cars.

Signs with additional information

Plates with additional information are rectangular small white markers that are installed in addition to the main sign. For example, a sign “for company vehicles only” or the way the vehicle is installed along with a parking sign. They serve to clarify the sign with which they are installed. There are no types of violations for non-compliance with the sign, that is, a fine will be issued for non-compliance with the requirements of the main sign. However, it is worth keeping in mind that in some regions, traffic police officers evacuate cars from parking lots if they are parked in violation of an additional sign.

We remind you that information about the presence of fines is stored in the vehicle history. And if you are planning to sell your car, the future owner, who checked the history through an online service, may refuse to purchase. Don't let situations involving deprivation of your rights arise. We wish you good luck on the roads!

Road signs and their designations

It’s hard to imagine today’s roads without traffic rules signs. And if 100 years ago there were no more than a dozen of them, now there are only 8 groups of them, each of which is assigned a numerical value. Therefore, not only drivers, but also pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists are required to know traffic signs and their designations. True, it is more difficult for motorists in this regard, since traffic police tickets contain a lot of questions on this topic.

Types according to GOST: terms, definitions

First, road signs are ranked based on their importance:

basic;
duplicating;
repeated;
preliminary.

The main signs are only those that are so named according to road conditions and GOST requirements. For example, “Give way” is installed before an intersection; it is definitely the main one.

Secondly, the main purpose of duplicate elements is to improve the reliability of drivers’ perception of information. Therefore, they are mounted in the same section of the road as the main signs: usually on the right, on the side of the road or dividing strip. However, if there are no more than 2 lanes in the opposite direction, such signs can be mounted on the left side.

A repeated sign is installed behind the main one and confirms its information. An example is “Make way for children ,” which in the traffic rules replaced “Attention, children!” The repeated element is often equipped with a sign specifying the coverage area of the main one - 200 m, 300 m, etc.

The last definition is preliminary signs, which are installed at some distance from the main ones. They warn drivers about changes in traffic conditions or objects expected ahead, i.e. they inform in advance about the presence of main signs along the way. For example, “Give way” with a “300 m” sign is a preliminary element.

Division by groups

They start with the number “1”, almost all have a triangular shape, and inform you about approaching an object, a difficult or dangerous area. That is, such road signs and their designations do not prohibit or restrict anything, but only warn. Accordingly, triangles with a white background and a red outline are installed in advance: outside populated areas at a distance of 150-300 m from the dangerous area, in populated areas - 50-100 m from them.

Temporary warnings. There are 10 of them in total, only the background is yellow, not white. They have a limited installation area - only in road work areas. However, they have priority over stationary ones. That is, when temporary and permanent signs contradict each other, drivers should be guided by the temporary ones.

"Crossroads area" This square-shaped element with a dark background and two intersecting diagonal stripes appeared in the traffic rules in 2018. It is installed either at the border of the intersection or no further than 30 m from it. Like other warning signs, it does not prescribe anything, but simply warns about the presence of “waffle” markings at the intersection. By the way, it also appeared relatively recently, and is described in the article “Road markings”.

The smallest group (13 pieces) with the number “2”. More than half of them are similar to warning signs - triangular in shape with a red border. These are a kind of “hybrids”, since they warn about nearby intersections, their configuration and the possible danger of passing, while at the same time regulating the rules for crossing roads. For example, “Give way”, “Intersection with a secondary road”. The same subgroup includes a priority sign that gives priority to oncoming traffic (square) or, on the contrary, determines the priority of oncoming traffic. Finally, there are diamond-shaped “Main Road”, “End of Main Road” signs, as well as a hexagonal “STOP” sign prohibiting movement without stopping.

Prohibiting ones numbered “3”.

There are over 40 elements in this group. Almost all of them are round in shape with a red border, with the exception of only 3, which remove the speed limit, cancel the overtaking ban or any restrictions. In this case, prohibition signs are divided into two subgroups.

Interrupting movement . Based on the name, they interrupt traffic, and instruct drivers to do this immediately - they cannot drive any further, period! However, there are also those who act selectively.

An example of a “total” ban is “brick”, “Entry denied”. Its presence means that any vehicle – car, bus, motorcyclist or cyclist – is prohibited from entering the designated area. However, it would be wrong to assume that traffic in a particular area is prohibited; you just need to look for another entrance. “Movement is prohibited” is a completely different matter, which categorically prohibits even riding a bicycle. That is, you can only move on foot and roll a bicycle.

Signs prohibiting the passage of freight transport, any mechanical vehicle (that is, not driven by the muscular power of an animal or a person), cars with a trailer, etc., are of a selective nature. In contrast to them, such seemingly harmless signs as “Control” , “Customs”, not to mention “Danger”, prohibit all vehicles from passing without stopping.

Does not interrupt movement . The designations of road signs in Russia can sometimes be difficult to understand, but in this case everything is simple: they have a certain coverage area, since they do not prohibit traffic, but simply limit it. Basically, the effect of elements that do not interrupt traffic begins at the place where they are installed and is canceled at the nearest intersection. For example, in the case of “Stopping is prohibited” or “Parking is prohibited”. But this doesn't always happen! After all, in front of bridges over water bodies, a “Minimum Distance Limit” is established in order to regulate the load on the structures, and to help drivers, it is usually equipped with a sign for the coverage area “100 m”, “200 m” or others. That is, the distance between vehicles established by the traffic rules is actually must be observed until the end of the project.

They start with the number “4”, have a round shape with a blue background without a border, with the exception of 3 rectangular plates related to transport transporting dangerous goods. Such signs inform drivers about mandatory travel directions, introduce certain restrictions, or grant certain categories of vehicles the right to drive on the roadway. For example, to signs from 4.1.1 to 4.1.6 you can add “only” - only to the right, to the left, only to the right and to the left (passing is directly prohibited). Moreover, if driving to the left is allowed, then you can make a U-turn, although there is no such information in the prescriptive road signs and their designations. However, the most important thing to know is that they remain in force only until the roadways cross.

Special regulations numbered “5” are needed in order to regulate a certain traffic mode, but not only in lanes.

All these signs are either square or rectangular in shape, the main background color is blue. The presence of a diagonal red stripe means that the sign cancels its other “double” without a stripe. For example, “Road for cars” - “End of the road for cars”, “Beginning of a populated area” – “End of a populated area”.

A separate category includes signs indicating the beginning or end of a settlement. All populated areas in Russia are divided into “serious” and “not very”, which determines the speed limit when passing through them. So, if the sign has a white background and black symbols, including graphic ones (they indicate separate enterprises, dacha cooperatives, objects under construction), then the speed limit is limited to 60 km/h. That is, this is a “serious” settlement. On the contrary, the presence of a sign at the entrance with a blue background and white letters classifies the territory as “non-serious”, which allows you to maintain a “cruising” speed of up to 90 km/h.

Information (number “6”) usually look like blue rectangles; they provide information about recommended or established travel modes, as well as the location of populated areas, as well as other objects.

For example, after crossing the border with the Russian Federation by car, a sign “General maximum speed limits” is always installed, from which guests of the country can find out the permitted speed in the city, outside the city, and on highways. The largest road signs with explanations and symbols are preliminary direction signs. They schematically show forks in the roads, the distance to them, which locality, which route can be reached by car.

Service signs with the number “7”, without exception, are purely informative, that is, they do not prescribe or prohibit anything.

Moreover, they do not even warn about changes in the road situation, but simply tell you where the police station, hotel, gas station, campsite, medical aid station, etc. are located. Usually they are installed directly in front of such objects, but they are also duplicated on the road so that they are not slip through." Accordingly, in the city the distance from service signs to objects is 100-150 m, and outside a populated area - from 400 to 800 m.

In recent years, very specific signs have appeared: “Radio communication zone with emergency services”, “Emergency telephone”. They were introduced so that by radio or wired telephone each person could call an emergency service, the police, the traffic police, etc. Alas, you rarely see them on Russian roads. However, like a blue and white rectangle with a fire extinguisher, which, according to legislators, will allow them to use if a car catches fire.

Additional information is numbered eight.

All of them are signs that are not used separately from others. It is logical that such elements of traffic rules only complement the meaning of others. For example, they inform you about how far away the dangerous section of the road is, what the zone and direction of the main road sign are, and what the temporary parking restrictions are. The geometry of these plates is varied, with the exception of “Obstacle” and “Dangerous Goods Class” - they all have a “frame” with a black outline, a white background and black markings.

Addition

In Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sevastopol, an experiment is being conducted until the end of 2020, which provides for the “pilot” use of almost 80 (!) new road signs that are not in the traffic rules. There is no point in listing them, since they are controversial, if only because they duplicate existing ones. It is unlikely that many will “take root” on our roads. However, we still recommend that you follow the news on our website!

Road signs and their meaning

Good afternoon, dear reader.

In this article we will talk about traffic signs , which are covered in Appendix 1 “Road Signs” to the traffic rules.

This article is the first article in the “Traffic Signs” series and it examines the most basic features of road signs: the division of signs into groups, the designations of each group, the features of their use.

Types of road signs in 2019

Currently, Appendix 1 to the Traffic Regulations has 8 sections, each of which deals with a separate group of road signs:

Road signs are divided into groups in such a way that each group contains signs that are similar in meaning. Let's look at each type of sign in more detail.

Traffic warning signs

Warning road signs are the most useful and safest signs for a driver. Their safety lies in the fact that the requirements of warning signs cannot be violated , because These signs do not prohibit or restrict the driver. The main function of such signs follows from their name. They warn the driver about possible dangers and help avoid road accidents.

Warning signs are installed on dangerous sections of roads and can be easily distinguished from all other signs. Most warning signs look like a red triangle:

The only exceptions are signs related to railway crossings, “turn direction” signs and the “Intersection section” sign. Their shape differs from a triangle:

Please note that all other warning signs are triangles .

Let me remind you once again that it is impossible to violate the requirements of warning signs, therefore, in the area of their coverage, a fine for violating the requirements of road signs in the amount of 500 rubles cannot be imposed.

However, warning road signs can warn you against violations that can result in very real penalties.

Consider an example with a “ dangerous turn ” sign:

If you come across a similar sign on the road, then you do not need to take any special action. However, you should keep in mind that after 150 - 300 meters outside a populated area or after 50 - 100 meters in a populated area there will be a dangerous turn on your way.

At a dangerous turn, overtaking is prohibited (clause 11.4 of the rules). Accordingly, for overtaking on a dangerous turn, the driver risks being punished in the form of deprivation of a driver’s license for 4-6 months or a fine of 5,000 rubles.

At the same time, the rules do not prohibit overtaking after the “dangerous turn” sign, but before the start of the most dangerous turn.

More detailed information about warning road signs is provided in the following articles:

Priority signs

Priority signs, unlike warning signs, establish priority right of passage at intersections, intersections of roadways, and narrow sections of the road.

In this case, you should pay attention that for violating the requirements of priority signs installed at an intersection, you can receive a fine of 1,000 rubles (Part 2 of Article 12.13 of the Administrative Code). For the same violation outside an intersection, a warning or a fine of 500 rubles may be imposed (Part 1 of Article 12.16 of the Administrative Code).

There are only 13 priority signs, so it’s quite easy to remember them even though they all have different shapes and colors.

Prohibition road signs

As the title of the section suggests, prohibition signs prohibit the driver from performing certain actions. This section is quite extensive, and it is not always possible to determine their meanings from images of signs. More detailed information about prohibition signs is presented in the following articles:

Here I would like to note that most often you can find the following road signs :

What do road signs really mean? )

Road signs are an excellent format not only for conveying information to drivers, but also for a variety of artistic mockery - the possibilities for applying imagination are truly inexhaustible. With signs you can sing police songs, tell dramatic love stories, collect collections of folk signs and much more.

Hymn of the Milzaners
A very old and very famous picture on the Runet.

Love story of a traffic police inspector
Probably no less an old joke than the “Anthem of the Milzaners” - “Love story of a traffic police inspector.”
It exists both as a flash cartoon and as a picture.

Alternative interpretation of signs
Or maybe the signs want to tell us something completely different from what we are used to seeing?

Advice for motorists
But it turns out how you can evaluate some other signs and situations on the road:

Road signs
1. If there is a “Children” sign in your area of attention, be extremely careful - brand emblems may be torn off from your car.
2. If you see a sign in front of you with a white horizontal stripe on a red background, turn back - Spartak fans are ahead.
3. If there is a sign on the side of the road with the number 40 on a blue square, do not reduce the speed below forty kilometers per hour.
Although, if the blue background does not alarm you, you may not listen to this recommendation. 4. If you see a sign on the road with a picture of a deer, feel free to step on the gas, fast-footed deer!

Signals of a traffic controller
1. If a traffic controller standing at an intersection raised his hand with a striped rod high up, this means: “Look, everyone, what a striped rod I have!”
2. If a traffic controller standing at an intersection suddenly jumps to the side, check whether you have gone too far to the left.

Driving through intersections
1. If you hit a traffic light before an intersection, follow the directions of the road signs when passing through the intersection.
2. If the road signs you were going to follow were also knocked down by you, consider your road the main one.
3. If at the traffic light hanging above your lane, a signal in the form of two crossed red stripes lights up, this means: “You’re finished, buddy.”
4. If you, driving a Zhiguli, are approaching an intersection along the main road, and a Mercedes is approaching the same intersection along a secondary intersection, continuing to
move, stick your left hand out the window, stretch it up and bend all fingers except the middle one into a fist. .
5. If you, driving a Mercedes, are approaching an intersection along a secondary road, and a Zhiguli is approaching the same intersection along the main intersection, the driver of which has stuck his left hand out the window, bending all fingers except the middle one into a fist, stop and let him pass. . Where can he get away from you in a Zhiguli?

Condition of the car
If you find that the steering gear housing is loose on your car, it means that you are well versed in such tricky things.

Driver and pedestrians
1. If a pedestrian standing on the side of the road raised his hand with his thumb up, it means he admires your driving style - thank him with a slight
nod of your head.
2. If you see a voting pedestrian right in front of you, it means you have entered a polling station.
3. Pedestrians who were on the roadway when the yellow traffic light turned on must vacate it as quickly as possible, and if this is
not possible, lie down, covering their heads with their hands.

How to behave in difficult situations
1. Before overtaking, the driver must make sure that there are other cars in front of him.
2. If the driver of the vehicle following you is hanging on your bumper, remember if you have made any sudden stops recently.
3. If you stop for repairs in the wrong place, immediately place an emergency stop sign behind your car.
The characteristic sound of a knocked down sign will warn you in time that another car is approaching.
4. If there is a "no passing" sign near your emergency stop, reinstall it behind your vehicle - this will allow you to carry out repairs in a calm environment.

How to behave with traffic police officers
If you are driving someone else's car in a drunken state without a driver's license and moving at a speed of 100 km/h in a populated area within the coverage area of a "no passing" sign on a one-way road in the direction
opposite to the flow of traffic vehicles, without turning on the turn signal, overtook a traffic police vehicle,
stop and, after the inspector approaches, ask him a question: why the hell was he, sober and with a license, driving in this direction on such a road?

Photo-toad for a Christmas tree
And Artemy Lebedev in LiveJournal offered to participate in deciphering the real meaning of the “Resting Place” sign. What is noteworthy is that many photoshops are made in the recognizable style of the works of Artemy Lebedev Studio.
