What documents are needed to operate a passenger trailer?

Documents for registration of a car trailer

To obtain documents for a trailer for a car, you need to submit an application for registration of the trailer with the traffic police. The trailer must be registered with the traffic police at your place of residence; registration must be completed within five days from the date of purchase.

Next, you need to check the license plate, the year of manufacture, which must match the year indicated in the vehicle passport, and identification of the color of the sides. The make and model, identification number, body and frame numbers must match the instructions on the vehicle title. When the traffic police inspector certifies the completion of such an inspection, you will need to pay a state fee for registration.

Description of the category for a car with a trailer

For cars whose trailers do not weigh more than 750 kg, category B licenses are sufficient, but if this threshold is exceeded, then a driver’s license for a towing vehicle is required. A maximum weight is also permissible, which does not exceed the curb weight of a category “B” vehicle. In this case, the maximum weight of the car with a trailer should not exceed 3500 kg. Otherwise, it will be necessary to open category “E”, then the weight of the trailer may be higher than 750 kg.

Of course, to obtain a license of another category, you will need to go to a driving school, take courses and pass an exam at the state traffic inspectorate.

Rules for using car trailers

If you want to use a car trailer with a passenger car, then its weight should not exceed the weight of the towing vehicle of category “B”. Also, for this you must have a tow hitch (towbar), and on the trailer itself you must install brake lights and turn signals, and electrical wiring for lighting.

From January 1, 2012, technical inspection in Russia for trailers that belong to individuals and have a permissible weight of up to 3500 kg has been cancelled. Now only legal entities will undergo technical inspection of trailers.

Rules for passing a vehicle trailer inspection

Such a technical inspection is carried out once every two years, if the trailer is not older than five years. For trailers whose age exceeds this threshold, inspection must be carried out once a year.

The inspection ticket indicates the month and year when the owner must undergo a technical inspection of the trailer at the State Traffic Inspectorate. For convenience, the date of passage most often coincides with the date of vehicle inspection or coincides with the last digit of the registration plate.

Documents required for technical inspection

To pass the technical inspection, you must provide:

  • passport
  • a copy of the document from the legal entity appointing you as the driver of this vehicle
  • driver's passport issued to a legal entity
  • certificate of inspection of the technical condition of the trailer, issued within 45 days from the date of inspection of the trailer
  • documents for a tractor-trailer
  • driver's license of the required category
  • driver's medical certificate
  • insurance policy issued to the owner of the towing vehicle.

Before the technical inspection, check the serviceability of the brake lights and turn signals, electrical wiring on the trailer and take care of its cleanliness.

How to register a trailer for a car for individuals and legal entities?

A trailer for cars and trucks is included in the number of vehicles (VV). According to the Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 1001 of November 24, 2008, registration of a passenger trailer is a mandatory requirement for all car owners using a vehicle for personal and commercial purposes. Factory-made and home-made trailers that are in operation and not registered with the traffic inspection authorities do not have the right to participate in road traffic. Drivers who do not have documents for a trailer violate current legislation and risk paying a fine.

Do I need to register a trailer for a car with the traffic police?

Documents for a trailer are also required as for cars and other road users. It is used for transportation of small-sized cargo by construction, installation, and repair teams, summer residents, farmers, and lovers of outdoor activities (fishing, hunting). Traffic rules (traffic rules) require its operation in conjunction with a mechanical “tractor” (car, tractor, self-propelled vehicle).

Refusal and late registration of a passenger trailer entails administrative liability. The above order prescribes the procedure, timing and order of its implementation. It takes place regardless of the dimensions and purpose of the structure. An exception is made for vehicles that are out of order and do not meet the requirements for safe operation.

What will you need to do to register your trailer?

Properly prepared registration of a trailer takes about 1 hour. When contacting the traffic police, the owner presents documents in order to enter a trailer for a passenger car into the register.

The owner of the vehicle will have to:

  1. Prepare an application form in printed form or handwritten. The form is filled in with: the name of the government agency, personal information (full name), information about the existing vehicle, and the reason for contacting the Traffic Police Department.
  2. Provide an identity card showing your place of registration and citizenship. A foreign passport is presented by citizens of another state, a passport with registration within the country is presented by people living in the territory of the Russian Federation, a birth certificate is presented by minor car owners who have not reached the age of 14.
  3. Vehicle documents containing transit numbers for the trailer. These include the vehicle passport (PTS).
  4. Receipt of paid state duty.
  5. Confirm ownership with a purchase and sale agreement, a certificate invoice to collect documents for the trailer.

Copyright holders and their authorized representatives contact the traffic police to register a trailer for a passenger car. Representatives of individuals and legal entities undergo a similar procedure by presenting a power of attorney certified by a notary. Written authorization gives third parties the same legal force as in the case of registration with the participation of the owners. The holder of the power of attorney in the application indicates information about the owner of the vehicle and his full name.

The full list of requirements is indicated on the stand at the MREO. Depending on the type and weight of trailers, registration will require the purchase of an MTPL insurance policy, confirmation of technical safety from supervisory authorities, and more.

Why don't the traffic police give permission for a trailer?

Traffic inspectors refuse to register a passenger trailer in the register, having identified non-compliance with legal norms:

  • inaccurate information was detected;
  • falsified documents were received;
  • the car owner provided false information;
  • registration of the trailer is prohibited by the road inspection and other authorities;
  • breakdowns, manufacturing defects and design features were found that pose a potential threat to safe operation and contradict established standards;
  • there is no receipt, the state fee has not been paid in full.

Do not forget, according to the law of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, falsification is punishable by imprisonment or forced labor for up to 3 years.

What needs to be done to register a trailer with the traffic police?

If you decide to make documents for a passenger trailer, contact the traffic police no later than 10 days after purchasing the vehicle. Just as the traffic inspectorate assigns a state license plate to a passenger car, the license plates of trailers receive official status and are carried out according to a standard model.

Where to contact?

According to Government Decrees No. 679 and No. 938, it is possible to obtain documents for a vehicle at any branch of the state automobile inspection at the place of the person’s actual location, and not at the place of registration. When going to register a trailer with the traffic police, first make an appointment through the inspection website or by calling the contact phone number of the selected department.

Stages of the procedure

The process looks like this:

  • collection of necessary documentation;
  • contacting the traffic police;
  • payment of tax;
  • inspection, examination.

Find out in advance whether other documents are needed for registration so as not to waste time. You can register a trailer through a traffic police department only after successfully passing an inspection, during which the VIN code is verified. The absence of malfunctions and the matching of the individual vehicle code guarantee the submission of papers to the registration department.

How to register a passenger trailer?

In most cases, registration of a trailer for a passenger car takes place without a technical inspection and obtaining a compulsory motor liability insurance policy. A scheduled check will take an hour. Registration of a trailer for passenger transport ends with the issuance of:

  • individual license plate;
  • registration certificates;
  • PTS with a mark of entry into the register.

The above applies to new vehicles. When they change a state sign to replace a stolen or lost one, they go through similar stages and receive new numbers.

Do I need to register my boat trailer?

Registration of a boat trailer with the traffic police follows the same procedure. Boat trailers weighing more than 3.5 tons are subject to annual inspection and periodic maintenance. There is no need to buy a separate insurance policy. Since April 25, 2002, it is allowed to refuse additional compulsory motor liability insurance. Registration of a boat trailer with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate is possible if you have a basic policy with a note about it.

Don’t put off registering your trailer through MREO, doubting: is it necessary to register a boat vehicle? Small and large vehicles are paid the same. The amount of payment, regardless of the region and characteristics of transport, corresponds to Art. No. 333.33 of the Tax Code of the Russian Federation.

How to register a homemade car trailer?

When a trailer without documents, no one knows how to register it. The procedure is complicated by the issuance of a passport, which it does not have, unlike factory analogues that are delivered to the buyer with a title. The design must meet the safety standards of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union (TR CU). It is sent for examination for certification, subjected to technical tests and checked for reliability.

Homemade technical inspection

The newly minted Kulibin, who decided to design his own “homemade product,” will drink more than one handful of valerian while going through the circles of bureaucratic hell. The stands of the Traffic Police Department indicate that they accept factory-made products and individual technical creativity for consideration, but in reality it turns out that everything is not so simple. Many inspectors flatly refuse to accept a vehicle they have made themselves, knowing that registering a homemade trailer for a car is difficult and tedious. The paperwork won't go away in one day.

An independent expert assessment is given on the following qualities:

  • steering efficiency;
  • weight, dimensions;
  • Fire safety;
  • controllability;
  • sustainability;
  • noise while driving.

The product receives approval for 3 years, on the basis of which a certificate of conformity with TR CU is issued. But that's not all. Kulibin will need to bypass other authorities to assign a VIN code and provide certificates for the spare parts used in the assembly. The certification center makes a verdict based on a theoretical examination of documentation and practical tests. As a result, a person receives a certificate and a conclusion, without which it will not be possible to register a homemade trailer for a car.

How much is the state fee for registering a trailer for a car?

The cost of the fee differs from the number of services provided. The price is strictly regulated by Art. 333.33 of the Internal Revenue Code. The payment details will be provided by the traffic inspector. They pay for the “payment” through a special terminal installed at the traffic police or any bank branch.

Punishments for violators

Owners of unregistered vehicles are subject to Art. 12.1 of the Code of Administrative Offences.

Rules for towing a trailer in 2019

Good afternoon, dear reader.

In most cases, passenger cars are operated without trailers. Therefore, car owners who only occasionally transport cargo on a trailer eventually forget the points of the traffic rules governing movement with a trailer.

This article discusses traffic regulations related to towing trailers:

What is a trailer?

The concept of “trailer” is discussed in paragraph 1.2 of the traffic rules:

“Trailer” is a vehicle that is not equipped with an engine and is intended to be driven in conjunction with a power-driven vehicle. The term also applies to semi-trailers and trailers.

Please note that from the point of view of traffic regulations, a trailer is a vehicle .

For example, this means that a collision between a trailer and an object constitutes a traffic accident.

A car together with a trailer is called a road train:

“Road train” is a mechanical vehicle coupled to a trailer(s).

This concept can be applied to both trucks and cars with trailers.

Driving license categories for transporting a trailer

Let's look at the driver's license categories that allow you to tow a trailer:

Note. The table is compiled on the basis of Article 25 of the Federal Law “On Road Safety”.

Thus, a trailer with a permissible weight of 750 kg or less can be attached to absolutely any vehicle and this will not require an additional category.

As for category B, in some cases it allows you to “drag” heavier trailers:

For example, the permissible maximum vehicle weight is 2,000 kg, the vehicle's unladen weight is 1,500 kg. In this case, you can add a trailer with a permissible weight of up to 1,500 kg to the car and no additional category will be required.

If you want to transport heavier trailers, you should undergo training and pass exams for category E:

Note. The theoretical exam is taken using the same set of tickets as the exam for the main category. For example, for category CE the CD set is used, for BE - ABM.

Documents when transporting a trailer

Clause 2.1 of the traffic rules:

2.1. The driver of a motor vehicle is obliged to:

2.1.1. Carry with you and, at the request of police officers, hand over to them for verification:

  • registration documents for this vehicle (except for mopeds), and if there is a trailer - also for the trailer (except for trailers for mopeds);

That is, in addition to documents for the car, the driver must have with him a trailer registration certificate .

Naturally, the trailer itself must have numbers (registration plates):

2. On motor vehicles (except for mopeds, trams and trolleybuses) and trailers, registration plates of the appropriate type must be installed in the places provided for this purpose, and on cars and buses, in addition, a license card must be placed in the lower right corner of the windshield in prescribed cases .

MTPL insurance for trailer

Article 4 of the Federal Law “On Compulsory Motor Liability Insurance” says the following:

3. The obligation to insure civil liability does not apply to owners of:

e) trailers for passenger cars belonging to citizens;

That is, for a personal trailer for a passenger car, registration of compulsory motor liability insurance is not required .

However, in all other cases, trailer insurance must be taken out. In 2020, a separate trailer policy is not issued. Information about the use of a trailer is entered into the car insurance (check the box). However, the cost of insurance if you have a trailer can increase by up to 40 percent, although for some trailers it remains unchanged.

You can calculate the cost of a policy for using a trailer using the following calculator:

Speed of vehicle with trailer

The traffic rules set speed limits only for passenger cars with a trailer :

  • 90 km/h - on the motorway.
  • 70 km/h - outside the populated area.
  • 60 km/h - in a populated area.
  • 20 km/h - in residential areas, bicycle areas and courtyard areas.

Please note that we are talking about the type of vehicle (passenger car), and not the category of vehicle (B).

For example, if a small truck (Gazelle) is traveling with a trailer, then these restrictions do not apply to it. That is, a Gazelle with a trailer can travel 110 km/h on the highway and 90 km/h outside the city.

The same applies to small pickup trucks, which often resemble cars in appearance.

That is, restrictions exist only for passenger cars. Other types of vehicles (trucks, buses) can travel at the same speed with a trailer as without a trailer.

No trailer driving sign

The traffic rules include a sign that prohibits driving with a trailer:

3.7 "Driving with a trailer is prohibited." It is prohibited to drive trucks and tractors with trailers of any type, as well as tow motor vehicles.

Please note that in this case we are also talking about the type of vehicle (truck or tractor), and not the category of the vehicle.

That is, this sign prohibits movement:

The sign does not prohibit the movement of cars or buses with trailers.

Transporting people in a trailer

22.8. It is prohibited to transport people:

  • outside the cabin of a car (except for cases of transportation of people in the back of a truck with a flatbed or in a van), tractor, other self-propelled vehicles, on a cargo trailer, in a caravan trailer , in the back of a cargo motorcycle and outside the seating areas provided for by the design of the motorcycle;

That is, transporting people in a cargo trailer is prohibited .

Trailer lights

19.1. In the dark and in conditions of insufficient visibility, regardless of the road lighting, as well as in tunnels, the following lighting devices must be turned on on a moving vehicle:

  • on trailers and towed motor vehicles - side lights .

The side lights on a trailer must be turned on in the following cases:

  • in the dark;
  • in conditions of poor visibility;
  • in the tunnels.

Road train lamp when towing a trailer

8. The following identification marks must be installed on vehicles:

“Road train” - in the form of three orange lights located horizontally on the roof of the cab with gaps between them from 150 to 300 mm - on trucks and wheeled tractors (1.4 t class and above) with trailers, as well as on articulated buses and trolleybuses;

Road train lights are installed only on the following types of vehicles:

  • on trucks with trailers (regardless of category);
  • on wheeled tractors heavier than 1,400 kg with trailers;
  • on articulated buses;
  • on articulated trolleybuses.

In this case, we are again talking about the type of vehicle:

Read more:  When will cars start getting cheaper?

For example, a pickup truck or a Category B van that is towing a trailer must have these lights installed.

On the other hand, on a bus that pulls a regular cargo trailer, a road train light is not required.

Is it possible to transport several trailers at the same time?

Traffic regulations do not impose restrictions on towing multiple trailers. For example, paragraph 1.2 of the traffic rules directly states that towing several trailers is possible:

“Road train” is a mechanical vehicle coupled to a trailer( s ).

Note. Unlike trailers, towing multiple motor vehicles is prohibited.

In conclusion, I would like to note that the rules for driving with a trailer are not so different from the rules without a trailer.

For example, if you just want to add a trailer weighing up to 750 kg to a passenger car, then all you need to remember is the speed limit outside populated areas and the need to turn on the lights at night.

Documents for the trailer

A car trailer can be purchased in different ways. You can buy a trailer, or you can buy just the frame and restore it yourself. It doesn’t matter whether it was new or used, the owner is obliged to take steps to register it upon purchase. Driving around the city without registration is a traffic violation. Let’s take a closer look at how to make the necessary documents and what steps to take to complete the necessary paperwork for a car passenger trailer.

What documents are needed to register a trailer?

To begin the registration process, you need to submit an application for registration to the traffic police. Here are the documents you will need for this:

  • The agreement on the basis of which the trailer was acquired as property.
  • Application in which the owner requests a technical inspection and registration.
  • Passport of the new owner who wishes to register.
  • Bank receipt as proof of payment of the fee.
  • Passport issued for the car of the new owner.

The buyer of a trailer for a passenger car must contact the traffic police no later than five days from the date of purchase (determined by the date in the sales documents).

Procedure for obtaining documents for a passenger trailer

Documents for a car trailer are issued at the traffic police department at the place of residence of the new owner. In 2018, the registration procedure did not change. First of all, let's find out whether special management rights are needed. There is the following legislation in this regard:

  • Trailers weighing 750 kg or less do not require a license other than driver category “B”. Another interpretation of the passenger car weight limit allows the operation of a trailer if the total weight of the vehicle together with it when loaded is no more than 3.5 tons.
  • If the trailer weighs more than 750 kg, the driver must have a license to drive a towing vehicle (category “E”).

The procedure for registering a trailer for a passenger car begins with the submission of an application. Next, the traffic police inspector checks the documents and compares the number, make and numbers of the body and frame with those indicated in the PTS. The color of the sides is also checked. If all specified parameters match, the inspector confirms that the test has been passed. After this, the owner pays the state duty at Sberbank and provides a receipt to the traffic police. After this, the registration procedure is completed. A stamp is placed on the PTS, which confirms the fact of registration.

Which trailer can not be registered?

There is a misconception that individuals may not register certain types of trailers, but this is not true. The legislation of the Russian Federation directly states that the owner is obliged to register any vehicle, no matter whether it has a motor or not. Therefore, the only type that has the right to not be registered is a trailer that never leaves the garage. For all other varieties there must be documents drawn up according to the proper procedure.

How to register a used trailer with documents

When purchasing a passenger trailer, the new owner must ensure that he receives the entire set of documents from the previous owner. Here is a list of documents used to formalize the sale:

  • Technical equipment passport (or PTS). All necessary parameters must be entered into this document: frame and body number, make, year of manufacture.
  • The act of acceptance and transfer. This document contains information about all faults and defects that exist at the time of sale.
  • Contract of sale. This document, if properly executed, is the basis for the transfer of equipment into the ownership of the new owner.

Only a complete set of documents can make it possible to register a trailer with the traffic police quickly and without serious problems. Therefore, the new owner must ensure that all documents according to this list are transferred to him on time.

How to “legalize” a trailer?

Unfortunately, a considerable number of trailers available in our country are, in fact, illegal. Such a trailer was once purchased, and then put in the garage and forgotten for one reason or another: breakdowns, change of plans, illness or death of the owner, and others.

Once such a thing is discovered, a dual situation arises: on the one hand, there is a good thing that can be used or can be sold. On the other hand, in the absence of documents, this cannot be done legally. The buyer in such a trailer may be attracted by the low cost, while the seller may be attracted by the opportunity to get rid of unnecessary, but space-consuming property. But how to make documents after purchase?

First of all, you should look for an instruction manual on specialized websites. If you cannot find an accurate manual due to the age of the model, you can take a manual for another model with similar characteristics.

Next, you need to find a person with whom the purchase and sale agreement will be drawn up. This agreement is necessary for legalization, but, in essence, it will be fictitious. The new owner of the trailer and his partner will have to go to court, so it is better that the partner in this agreement is a reliable person, ideally a close friend or relative.

The new owner can contact the traffic police with the contract, operating manual, application and receipt for payment of the duty. Naturally, since these documents are not enough, a refusal will follow, but without a documented refusal to register, you cannot go to court, so this stage is necessary.

Next comes an appeal to the court, during which the partner of the new owner under the purchase and sale agreement must confirm that he is the owner of the trailer and that the documents have been lost over the years. After this, the court makes a request to the MREO, from where confirmation should come that the trailer is not registered and there are no reasons to prohibit its operation. After this, the court makes a decision recognizing the ownership rights of the new owner. Based on this court decision and based on the results of checking the condition of the trailer, the traffic police will issue a new title.

Important! The process of legalizing a trailer is quite lengthy and expensive; it can take several months. However, this is the only way to start operating the trailer legally. Therefore, it is worth thinking about whether it is worth purchasing a trailer without a complete set of documents.

Fine for a trailer without documents

The administrative legislation of the Russian Federation clearly states what fine is imposed for violations of the registration and use of non-motorized vehicles (and trailers fall into this category). Here are the data for 2018:

  • For driving with a trailer that has not undergone the registration procedure, a fine of 500 rubles is provided. However, such a fine will almost certainly be accompanied by a fine for lack of insurance for the trailer (after all, a compulsory motor liability insurance policy cannot be issued without the appropriate set of documents). Additional fine - another 500 rubles.
  • For operation without license plates you will have to pay 2500 rubles.
  • For using a trailer exceeding the dimensions established by category “B”, a penalty of up to 5,000 rubles is provided. fine

Fines for a homemade trailer for a passenger car are imposed in the same amounts as for factory-made products. If you are fined again, the fine can be up to RUB 5,000. Deprivation of rights for up to 90 days is also possible.

How to make documents for a homemade trailer

The legislation equates homemade trailers with factory products in the need to undergo registration procedures. However, the procedure for making documents for a product of your own design is somewhat more complicated.

In addition to the standard set of documents, you will need to confirm the quality of workmanship. To do this, a certificate is drawn up on the quality of the materials used in the design, and an examination is carried out to determine whether the design complies with vehicle safety requirements.

The process of completing documents for a homemade trailer is quite time-consuming. However, after completing all the necessary procedures, he receives a license plate and becomes the same full participant in the movement as industrially manufactured products.

Which is better: a new trailer or an old one with the documents restored?

Thus, today a car enthusiast in need of a trailer has several options:

  • Buy a trailer with documents. Prices range from 20-30 thousand. The cost of re-registration is about 2 thousand.
  • Buy a trailer without documents. Here the cost can be in the range of 10-15 thousand, depending on the condition. The registration procedure will require 6-7 thousand.

In fact, both options are approximately equal in cost. But no matter what option the car enthusiast chooses, it is necessary to take care of proper paperwork!

You can learn more about how to obtain documents for a passenger trailer from this video:

Registration of a trailer for a car

Owners of passenger cars are required to register not only their cars, but also their trailers. In many ways, the rules of procedure are similar, but in relation to towed devices they are less complex. To register a trailer, the owner will need to collect the necessary package of documents and submit them to the traffic police. There are three ways to submit your application. Failure to comply with trailer registration standards will result in administrative penalties for violators. All towed devices are subject to registration. There are no exceptions based on weight, volume or materials of manufacture. Significant differences in the procedure for registering a trailer are provided for home-made devices.

When do I need to register a trailer?

According to clause 1.2 of the Traffic Regulations of the Russian Federation, a trailer is recognized as a vehicle without an engine, intended for driving on the roadway. Accordingly, the procedure for registering such a vehicle is subject to the registration standards set out in Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 938 (dated 08/12/1994) and Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 399 (dated 06/26/2018).

According to paragraph 6 of Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 399 dated June 26, 2018, the vehicle is subject to registration within 10 days:

  • After acquisition by any means (by inheritance, under a sales contract or deed of gift).
  • When a trailer for a car is brought from abroad and has gone through the customs clearance procedure.

Where can I register a passenger trailer?

Depending on the type of trailer and the motor vehicle with which it will travel, registration is carried out:

  • In the traffic police departments , namely in the interdistrict registration and examination departments (MREO). This is where you should apply when registering a trailer for a car.
  • In the state technical supervision authorities. Apply when registering trailers for tractors and other vehicles whose speed does not exceed 50 km/h.
  • In military automobile inspections . Trailers belonging to military units are registered here.

You can contact the traffic police department both at your place of residence and at your place of stay, i.e. to any location located within the Russian Federation (Appendix 2, clause 2.4.1 of Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 605 of 08/07/2013).

What do you need to register a trailer?

Registering a trailer for a passenger car with the traffic police is not a complicated procedure. It is similar to registering a car. The only difference is that the trailer does not need to take out a compulsory motor liability insurance policy and undergo a technical inspection. There are a couple of exceptions to this rule. Maintenance is necessary if the weight of the device is more than 3.5 tons. This rule applies to owners - individuals (Clause 4 of Article 32 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation No. 170 of 07/01/2011).

Provided that the vehicle belongs to an individual entrepreneur or a legal entity, you need to take out a car insurance policy (Article 4 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation No. 40 of April 25, 2002) and undergo a technical inspection for any trailer (Clause 4 of Article 32 of the Federal Law of the Russian Federation No. 170 of July 1, 2011).

If the towbar was purchased new and not used, then maintenance is not required for the first 3 years after purchase. Further inspections are carried out every 2 years. If the trailer is more than 7 years old, maintenance will be required annually. Provided that it is intended for the transport of dangerous goods, inspection is carried out once every six months.

Deadlines for registration of a passenger trailer

After acquiring ownership of a trailer for a passenger car, the new owner has 10 days to register it with the MREO (clause 6 of Order No. 399 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs dated June 26, 2018). The direct registration procedure takes about an hour, so meeting the deadline is realistic. Apart from waiting in line, checking documents and information in databases takes about 20 minutes. The same amount will be required to inspect the trailer at a special site. Then, within 10 minutes, the traffic police officer makes a decision on registration or refusal. They issue a certificate and issue numbers for the trailer in the next 10 minutes.

Required documents

To complete the registration steps, the owner of the trailer will need a small package of documents:

  • A general passport or other ID that replaces it.
  • The document by which the owner acquired ownership. This could be a purchase and sale agreement, a gift agreement, etc.
  • PTS.
  • Receipt of payment of the state fee for registration actions.
  • Transit numbers (if available).

An application of the established form is filled out directly at the traffic police department.

The owner's representative also has the right to register a trailer for a passenger car. In this case, you will additionally need his general passport and a notarized power of attorney.

How to register a trailer for a car with the traffic police?

The procedure for registering a trailer is in many ways similar to that for cars. The owner needs to go through several stages:

  • After purchasing the device, you have a maximum of 10 days to appear at the traffic police department for registration. It is advisable to register in advance. This can be done through State Services, during a personal visit to the nearest MREO office, or simply by calling there by phone. Select a branch based on location.
  • Collect the required package of documents.
  • At the appointed time, go to the traffic police department (MREO) and fill out an application of the established form right on the spot. The state fee must be paid in advance. This can be done through any bank branch, using a payment terminal or cashier services. You can also pay the amount at the MREO terminal.
  • Present the purchased trailer to a passenger car for inspection to a department employee. He will check the VIN numbers. The procedure will take no more than 20 minutes.
  • Submit a package of documents along with a receipt for payment of the state fee for registration. Document verification takes about 10 minutes.
  • Obtain a certificate of registration from the employee.

How to register a passenger trailer at the MFC?

Starting from August 2019, vehicle owners have the opportunity to undergo full vehicle registration at the MFC and receive a certificate on the day of application. For this purpose, a traffic inspector is on duty at each center. In MFCs where there is no traffic police representative, a direct visit to the MREO office is assumed and consists of the following steps:

  1. The owner of a trailer for a car makes an appointment at the MFC of a specific branch by phone or during a personal visit. You can skip this step and just come to register on a first-come, first-served basis.
  2. Collect the package of documents required for the procedure.
  3. An employee of the center will help you fill out an application to the traffic police, check the submitted evidence and make an appointment for registration at a convenient time at any branch of the MREO.
  4. On the appointed date, the applicant appears at the MREO and goes through the standard registration procedure, without wasting time filling out an application and waiting in line.

What documents does the trailer owner receive after registration?

After registration, the owner of the trailer will be given the following documents:

  • Certificate of registration for a passenger trailer.
  • New state registration plate on the vehicle. Provided if the car owner registers a new trailer or decides to replace existing license plates.

Additionally, a mark indicating successful completion of registration is placed in the PTS.

When receiving a certificate, you should pay attention to the category indicated in it. There are frequent situations when, due to software errors and the inattention of traffic police officers, a driver’s category “E” is assigned to it.

How much does it cost to register a trailer for a car?

The total amount that will have to be paid for the registration of the trailer will depend on what document the owner will draw up. When applying through State Services, the cost is reduced by 30%.
