The biggest road accidents in the world

The worst accidents in the world

A road traffic accident (RTA) is an event that occurred as a result of the movement of a vehicle and caused injury (death of a person), damage to a vehicle, cargo, or structure. Most accidents result in minor damage to vehicles and minor injuries to pedestrians. However, news reports from time to time contain reports of terrible road accidents - misfortunes that claimed the lives of dozens of people and changed the appearance and technical condition of vehicles beyond recognition. Today we will talk about the largest car accidents that happened on the roads of Russia and the rest of the world.

Top 5 worst accidents in Russia

5. Fatal collision in the Vologda region

A terrible accident occurred 155 km from Vologda. Recorded by traffic police officers on October 14, 2007. A head-on collision between an A4 passenger car and a Chinese-made Admiral off-road vehicle occurred near the urban village of Kaduy.

The Audi driver was driving over the speed limit and lost control.
As a result, he drove into the oncoming lane and rammed a Chinese SUV of the Zhong Xing brand at full speed. Before the ambulance arrived, 7 people died from their injuries at the scene. Only one victim was hospitalized in serious condition.

4. Fatal overtaking on the second kilometer of the Terpilitsky highway in the Leningrad region.

Video: Road accident on the highway near Volosovo 08/06/16

One of the most terrible accidents on Russian roads, filmed on a car recorder. The culprit of the accident is a 19-year-old driver who received his license 3 days before the fateful day and did not calculate the safety of the maneuver being performed. The scene of the incident is Terpilitskoye Highway, which connects the settlements of Koporye and Volosovo in the Leningrad Region.

The driver of the “ten” lost control while overtaking and collided with a light-duty Gazelle truck.
As a result of this accident, 5 people were injured. 3 passengers inside a domestic car flew onto the road under the wheels of a car with a video recorder. The collision could not be avoided because its driver did not have time to react. Despite numerous injuries, including fractures, bruises and concussions, each of these people survived.

A 19-year-old novice driver driving a VAZ-2110 died in the hospital from his injuries. The driver of the Gazelle was luckier. He escaped with scrapes and bruises, despite serious damage to the front of the van.

3. Car accident near a military base in South Ossetia

The incident happened on May 19, 2016. The scene is a winding and treacherous mountain road connecting the village of Kanchaveti and the city of Tskhinval, not far from the 4th Guards Military Base. The driver of a PAZ bus with officers was moving as part of a large convoy and lost control. The vehicle flew off the road and went straight into the abyss, turning over several times.

According to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the vehicle convoy was transporting military personnel, including officers, to exercises. The official cause of the accident was a malfunction of the brake system.

As a result of a passenger bus falling from a great height, 22 officers were injured - six died and sixteen were hospitalized with injuries. The surviving servicemen were promptly transported to medical institutions in Tskhinval. By order of the Minister of Defense, a plane with medical workers was sent to the republic to send patients in serious condition to the Vishnevsky and Burdenko hospitals.

2. Collision between a passenger bus and a truck in Dagestan

Not far from the village of Talovka, located in the Tarumovsky district, on July 13, 2016, an accident occurred involving a passenger bus and a KAMAZ tractor moving with a trailer. The accident claimed the lives of 9 people. More than 20 people were injured of varying degrees of severity. Among the victims are 4 children.

The accident happened on km 284 of the Makhachkala-Astrakhan highway. A trailer crashed into a passenger vehicle (flight Derbent-Anapa), which, due to unreliable fastening, came off the tractor and flew into the oncoming lane.

The driver of the vehicle, who was carrying 33 passengers at that moment, did not have time to avoid the collision. The impact was very strong, but no fire broke out at the scene. To eliminate the consequences of the accident, 13 units of special equipment and more than 40 people were involved.

After a terrible accident in the Tarumovsky district, a criminal case was opened and charges were brought against the driver who was driving the truck.

1. A terrible accident involving children in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug

One of the most severe accidents that shocked Russia in recent times.
The tragic event dates back to December 4, 2016. The accident occurred on the Tyumen-Khanty-Mansiysk road. The bus, which was carrying 33 people, was caught by a heavy vehicle moving in the oncoming lane. Due to the tangential impact and loss of control, the passenger vehicle was carried into the oncoming lane by another truck moving at the permitted speed.

On the bus there was a gymnastics team of 29 people + 2 coaches. As a result of the terrible impact, 10 children died. No one from the coaching staff survived. Twenty people were hospitalized with burns, head injuries, numerous bruises and fractures.

As a result of this “high-profile” case, charges were brought against 4 responsible persons - the drivers of the first truck and bus (as it turned out later, he was also guilty of what happened), the owner of the passenger transport (IP), and the director of the gymnastics school.

4. The collapse of the bridge over the Yichang River in China due to a truck explosion

Surprisingly, bridge collapses in China occur quite often. It arises due to the fault of freight carriers who send overloaded trucks on flights, as well as unfortunate builders who, due to short deadlines for the delivery of objects, neglect the rules and regulations and use cheap and low-quality building materials.

In Hainan province, on February 1, 2012, another major disaster occurred - a truck carrying fireworks and firecrackers, moving along a bridge over the Yichang River, exploded. Most of the building structures, located 20 meters above ground level, could not withstand the shock wave and collapsed. 10 trucks fell from the bridge. A large amount of special equipment and rescuers were needed to clear the rubble from the remains of building structures, parts of asphalt pavement, and mangled vehicles. The car accident killed 26 people and injured dozens.

3 Tennessee Massacre

This largest car accident involving 176 cars occurred in the United States in 2002. The scene is one of the highways in Tennessee. On the day of the accident, a thick and dense fog formed on the road, aggravating the already poor road conditions - ice. Far from ideal visibility and slippery road surface, coupled with the banal inattention of the drivers, took their toll. Resulted in a side-by-side collision between two large trucks. As a result of a strong impact, one of the heavy trucks turned around and blocked almost the entire roadway (in one direction).

Due to the heavy traffic and poor visibility, cars began to crash into each other in a chain.
Despite the prompt dispatch of police to the scene, more than 170 vehicles were involved in the accident. Some vehicles literally flew over the metal barrier, causing new victims in the oncoming lane. Dozens of people were injured. A school bus was involved in the accident, but no passengers were injured. It took North American road services and rescuers 2 days to dismantle the giant pile of twisted metal and reach the victims.

2. Bus falling into an irrigation canal in Egypt

This sad event occurred near Cairo on December 14, 2008 and claimed the lives of 53 people.
The bus was moving along the route from Cairo to the “Pearl of Upper Egypt” - the city of El Minya. The cause of the accident was the overload of the passenger bus, which did not allow the driver to successfully overtake the truck. Due to severe overload, the vehicle tilted and fell straight into an irrigation canal from a great height. Among the victims of the terrible disaster were both local residents and tourists from different countries who came to Egypt on vacation.

1. Massive vehicle collision in the UAE

A major car accident that occurred in March 2008 in the United Arab Emirates, near Abu Dhabi, became a bitter lesson for careless drivers. Heavy fog that descended on the road early in the morning led to a collision of more than 100 cars, small and large trucks, and passenger buses. An increase in the number of victims (about 270 people were hospitalized and three died) resulted from the fire of several vehicles carrying workers heading to repair the road.

To eliminate the consequences of the accident, the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway was completely blocked. Several fire brigades took part in extinguishing the fire, but several vehicles were burned to the ground.

Be careful!
No one is immune from car accidents and unpleasant incidents on the roads. To reduce the likelihood of being involved in car accidents, you must follow traffic rules, correctly assess the road situation, and be attentive and collected.

Rating of the most terrible accidents of 2019 - car accidents that made history

Despite the fact that tens of thousands of materials and publications have been written about compliance with traffic rules, the number of accidents around the world is constantly increasing. Most of them end, fortunately, without a threat to the life and health of traffic participants, although they are always accompanied by material damage. But some became famous due to the large number of victims and victims at the same time.

Every year, many countries introduce bans, restrictions and innovations that relate to compliance with traffic rules. However, terrible and shocking accidents occur with enviable regularity. The fatal accidents listed below in this rating serve as a clear example of how important it is to remain attentive while driving, not to drink alcohol, and to regularly check the technical condition of your vehicle. Each of the accidents listed in the rating can be properly assessed as severe in its consequences.

UAE: Dangerous Dubai-Abu Dhabi highway

It is considered the busiest road in the richest Muslim country, which is visited annually by millions of tourists from different parts of the globe. However, this is not the only destabilizing factor - in the morning hours fog often falls here, which significantly impedes visibility. It's no surprise that one of the biggest car accidents took place here.

The most famous are 2 cases. The first is striking not in the number of victims, but in the number of participants - then about 300 vehicles simultaneously collided or were involved in the collision. There were three dead people. In the second case, 130 cars were involved, no people were killed, but about 60 people were injured. All this led to the formation of a half-kilometer traffic jam.

Dubai - Abu Dhabi highway

Deadly maneuver in Egypt

This major accident by world standards occurred in another tourist Mecca in 2012. The driver of a regular bus was carrying 70 people on board and decided to overtake a truck on the highway. Having lost control (one of the reasons for this was exceeding the permissible number of passengers), he allowed the vehicle to fall into an irrigation canal.

The sad result of the road accident was 57 deaths, some of whom arrived on tourist visas from around the world. Several dozen ambulances, fire brigades and police patrols took part in the rescue operation.

Fireworks in the Middle Kingdom

Fire shows and fireworks are loved by millions of people of different ages all over the planet. Sometimes pyrotechnics can be dangerous, and on a fairly impressive scale. On the eve of the New Year, the truck had to deliver a huge number of fireworks to their destination at the same time. As a result of the onset of detonation, their premature combustion occurred, turning the car into a huge sparkling torch.

This accident became known in the world not only due to this fact - at that moment the truck was moving along a concrete bridge. As a result of strong explosions, several concrete spans collapsed, into which other cars began to fall. As a result, 5 people died and dozens were disabled.

Acid tank from sunny Florida

A dozen cars took part in this traffic incident, as well as a tanker truck transporting a dangerous chemical reagent. It is still unclear who exactly was responsible for the large-scale event, but there was a collision between cars and a tank, which caused it to overturn.

This terrible accident led to the death of 3 people, and a couple of dozen more received dangerous injuries and injuries. Tons of a chemically active substance were poured onto the road surface. Hundreds of thousands of dollars from local budgets were spent on eliminating the consequences of the accident.

Mexican "bike ride"

An accident of enormous tragedy occurred more than 10 years ago in Mexico and became known throughout the world. The thing is that it took place during a traditional bike ride, and the culprit was only one passenger car. Dozens of athletes from different countries took part in this cycling race, which took place in the northern Mexican states. The driver, who was behind the wheel, immediately collided with a group of cyclists who were moving towards him.

As a result, there are many injured participants in the race. Some of them were no longer able to return to their favorite sport. Sad statistics show that every second fatal accident is related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Desert Storm

This accident, large in scale and resonance, took place in the American state of California back in 1991. This time, the culprit was a sandstorm, which is considered a frequent occurrence in this area. Massive accidents began on one of the state's busiest highways at a time when visibility was virtually reduced to zero.

Due to the fact that drivers could not clearly see the road situation, they began to collide with each other. In total, more than 100 vehicles were involved in the accident. The sad results of this sandstorm include 17 dead and a dozen injured.

Fog in Tennessee and Georgia

It is known that the United States of America is perhaps the leading country in the number of annual natural disasters. Many of them automatically complicate the traffic situation, which immediately becomes an emergency instead of something familiar. Another large-scale brawl, in which dozens of cars were directly involved, took place on the highway between the neighboring states of Georgia and Tennessee. This time, quite thick fog fell on the road surface, which caused massive collisions.

Tennessee accident 2002

Until traffic was completely blocked, about 120 cars were damaged to a greater or lesser extent. About 200 people became victims of a large-scale road incident. Most of them required medical attention.

Tragedy in Israel

Another terrible traffic accident in the news from around the world occurred in Israel. The bus driver, carrying passengers, was moving through mountainous terrain, but considered it necessary to overtake on a difficult section in terms of road conditions.

Losing control, the bus fell straight into the abyss. Despite the fact that the driver managed to survive, his actions caused the death of 24 people who were in the cabin - most of them were citizens of the Russian Federation, and in total there were 51 tourists in the cabin at that time.

Russian roots of deadly road accidents

Russian drivers were no exception - the following incident can also be considered “one of the worst” in the history of road transport. The following story took place in the northern city of Krasnoyarsk. Due to the fact that the driver of one of the city minibuses did not pay attention to the prohibitory traffic light signal, he caused a collision with a car - the car was driven by a young girl. She miraculously managed to stay alive, although the body of the metal taxi slowed down near her head.

The accident became popular among viewers around the world due to the fact that it was captured online using outdoor video recording equipment placed on the street. Subsequently, the video material was used in court hearings. This is a typical example of how simply ignoring traffic rules can lead to tragic consequences.

Another sad story took place in 2007, 150 kilometers from the Russian regional center of Vologda. Only 2 cars took part in the collision: one of them was an Audi, and the other was made in China. As a result of exceeding the speed limit, the Audi driver entered the oncoming lane, where a head-on collision occurred.

7 people died right on the scene, including drivers and passengers. All of them did not wait for the ambulance to arrive, which managed to hospitalize only one person with serious injuries.

How to protect yourself from fatal accidents

Not in all cases an accident is defined as “terrible” based on the number of vehicles involved. Sometimes there may be 2 or 3, but the number of victims and material damage impresses even experienced rescuers. Traffic rules were developed precisely to ensure safety for all participants, but this only works if they are impeccably observed.

Many of the worst accidents occur not only due to the fault or lack of experience of drivers, but are the result of a confluence of a number of unfavorable factors. However, as statistics demonstrate, negligence, inattention, and even drunk driving directly have a detrimental effect and increase the likelihood of a sad outcome. It is within our power to do everything possible to reduce the number of such road accidents.

A selection of the worst car accidents of 2018

The seven most massive car accidents in 7 years

The November 22 accident in Texas is, of course, very serious, but not the largest. Over the past ten years, more than 25 accidents have occurred in different parts of the world, involving dozens and hundreds of different vehicles. In some of them, all participants remained alive, and in others, hundreds of people suffered. Most of the incidents occurred in bad weather conditions, and drivers' disregard for the speed limit provoked mass collisions.

In a 176-vehicle crash that occurred on December 1, 2011 on Route 386 in Tennessee, USA, one person was killed and 18 were injured. The tragedy stemmed from three separate collisions. Road services, describing the situation, spoke of dense, heavy fog.

On September 15, 2011, one of the largest accidents of our time occurred. On the Rodovia dos Imigrantes highway near the Brazilian Sao Paulo, 1 person was killed and 49 were injured in a collision of 300 cars. The reason was dense fog.

On July 20, 2009, dozens of people were injured in a crash involving 259 vehicles on the A2 motorway in Lower Saxony. Police from nearby Braunschweig said it was the largest series of clashes ever to occur in the area. A total of 66 people were injured when several drivers lost control of their vehicles due to heavy rain. The lateness of Sunday played a role. More than 2 hours have passed since the first and last collision, and the chain of cars stretched for 30 km. Authorities estimated the damage at 1.5 million Euros.

In the Czech Republic, the town of Vysočina, on March 20, 2008, 231 vehicles collided on the D1 highway due to icy conditions. Of the participants, only 3 people were seriously injured.

On March 11, 2008, the United Arab Emirates' worst accident occurred. Not far from Abu Dhabi in the early morning, due to heavy fog, 60 cars, SUVs, trucks and buses collided. Despite the small number of vehicles, the accident injured 277 people and killed three, with several more dying in hospital. The large number of casualties is explained by a fire that engulfed 20 vehicles, including several buses with workers carrying out repairs on a section of the highway.

On March 17, 2005, in an accident of more than 300 cars, 60 people were injured and three died. The tragedy occurred in the suburbs of Helsinki, and rescue efforts were complicated by morning traffic jams. A sudden change in weather, which brought a blizzard, created a smooth skating rink on several sections of the road in a few hours. Police later estimated that about 400 vehicles were involved in the incident.

And one more accident, included in this list not because of the victims (there were none at all), and not because of the number of cars, but because of the cost. On December 5, 2011, 13 sports cars and one random Toyota Prius collided on the Shimonoseki Expressway in southwestern Japan. The accident involved 8 different Ferraris, 3 Mercedes-Benzes, a Lamborghini and a Nissan Skyline heading to a car festival. The convoy was moving along the highway at high speed; the driver of the first Ferrari lost control. It is noteworthy that the youngest of this company was 37 years old. And according to a police officer who gave an interview to Bloomberg, they are all “a bunch of tyrants.” The cost of the accident was almost $4 million.

As part of its activities, the World Health Organization studies statistics on the welfare of countries, which, among other things, includes accidents and deaths on the roads. A kind of anti-rating is compiled based on the number of deaths per year per hundred thousand population.

Find out in which countries this figure is huge in our review.

Here, 17 people die every hour under the wheels of various types of transport, which totals about 150 thousand people per year.

Almost all accidents (84%) occur due to the driver’s fault: due to his inattention, alcohol intoxication, or using a mobile phone during a trip. Moreover, a third of all fatal accidents occur in the two-wheeler category, and the mortality rate is highest among citizens aged 15-35 years.

Indian roads are a scary attraction featuring a wide variety of vehicles , from cars to carts, as well as other characters, which can be mules, cargo elephants and camels. All this action is carried out in the absence of traffic rules, road signs and lane markings.

Much more accidents occur due to the fault of... cows, which, being sacred animals, go wherever they want, including on the roads. On average, more than 500 people die each year from collisions with these animals.

The death rate on Chinese roads can be called consistently terrifying - according to various sources, from 58 to 160 thousand people a year. The Chinese themselves believe that the main reason is the abundance of self-taught drivers who do not receive proper education and practice while studying in driving schools, but simply buy a driver’s license for themselves.

The second reason is ridiculous fines for violating traffic rules, which do not scare drivers and do not make them more careful and responsible.

And finally, don’t forget about the completely immoral practice of finishing off pedestrians . This is done in order to save money, because if in the event of a collision a pedestrian becomes crippled, then the guilty driver will have to pay for medical services for the rest of his life.

Thus, it is cheaper to pay for a funeral once and serve a couple of years for negligence than to receive such bondage for life. Moreover, Chinese drivers stop at nothing, with equal cruelty, running over tiny children and elderly people several times, just to avoid unnecessary expenses.

USA

For many decades, the United States has led the world in road safety. They were famous for their responsible attitude to road safety engineering, introduced strict standards, and harshly prosecuted drunk drivers.

From the 70s until the 90s, mortality rates were at acceptable levels. Then the number of road accidents began to grow, and the American authorities tightened the legislation, increased the number of police officers on the highways, so from the “zero” until 2013 it was possible to control order on the roads.

Researchers report that this situation is mainly caused by drunk drivers and not wearing seat belts. Statistics have shown that half of all those killed in road accidents are drivers and passengers who were too lazy to fasten their seat belts.

By the way, America is in penultimate place among the twenty developed countries studied by WHO in terms of belt use.

The second most common cause is alcohol abuse, the maximum concentration of which in America should not exceed 0.08 grams per deciliter.

Road deaths have already become one of the most important Iranian tragedies, constantly under the control of senior government officials. WHO puts the figure at 25 thousand people, UNICEF – at 28 thousand who annually end their lives under the wheels.

Our Fatherland has nothing to boast about - about 19 thousand died as a result of 170 thousand accidents. This figure is 3 and even 4 times higher than the statistics of other European countries.

Of this figure, 143 thousand accidents occurred due to the fault of drivers, of which 12 thousand were driving while intoxicated.

Most accidents occur in large cities, where there is denser traffic flow, a more dynamic lifestyle and more arrogant pedestrians . In the regions, the mortality rate is significantly lower, but they have their own problem - an increased accident rate among bus drivers, including due to drunkenness.

The unfavorable road situation is associated with the quality of education provided by driving schools, the lack of control over road markings that are erased or not visible at night, and, of course, with the condition of the road surface.

Thailand's statistics are questionable, as the WHO considers them to be underestimated. In 2017, almost 500 people died here in just one week, and according to unofficial data for the year, this figure reaches 14 thousand people.

Finally, the local citizens themselves are incredibly frivolous and irresponsible, driving without a license and observing only their own driving rules. In addition, mopeds are very common in the country, for whose owners the law is not written at all .

It is in road accidents, and not from disease or old age, that most of the citizens of this country die. The Vietnamese Fatherland Front Committee has calculated that every 3 years more people die under the wheels than in a century from a pandemic. Moreover, of the 14 thousand victims, more than 80% are young people aged 15-29 years, which is explained by their love of riding motorcycles.

Despite the country's strict quality standards for motorcycle helmets, each of which must undergo appropriate testing before going on sale, they are not popular. Their cost is beyond the means of most drivers, and therefore, according to official data, 82% of motorcyclists wear more affordable helmets, which are not able to protect even from the weakest impact.

The picture of the deplorable road situation is complemented by many kilometers of traffic jams, weak control by law enforcement agencies, poor driving school and equally poor road conditions .

Between 10,000 and 12,000 Egyptians die annually due to road traffic accidents each year, of which 20% are pedestrians.

The quality of the road surface on the roads deserves praise, but they have neither markings nor signs. The drivers themselves observe only one of all the traffic rules - loud sounds of the horn during any maneuvers. And against the backdrop of all this there are huge traffic jams that look like fights without rules.

According to official statistics, about 4.5 thousand people die here every year. However, it is even difficult to blame this country for such a road situation, since in connection with military operations it is quite difficult to be distracted by the condition of the roads or the quality of driving skills.

Authorities are trying to solve more pressing problems, not paying attention to the abundance of stolen cars on the roads, as well as the presence or absence of driver's licenses of their legal or illegal owners.

Economists estimate the damage from Egyptian road accidents at a billion dollars annually , but the authorities cannot, and are not trying to correct the situation.

No matter how crazy it may sound, there are still a number of countries where it is permissible to drive a car without learning the rules of the road, and sometimes without even having a driver’s license.

Thus, in Nigeria, only a couple of years ago they made a traffic knowledge exam mandatory for obtaining a driver’s license . Unlike the States, in this country such a deplorable situation is associated with an overall extremely low level of welfare, education and roads. This leads to semi-literate people driving very old cars, not knowing the rules, on disgustingly bad roads.

A clear example is the recent accident in Kano State, where over 20 schoolchildren died as a result of an accident. The culprit of the incident was a huge hole in the road, which the drivers of a school bus and a truck were simultaneously trying to avoid.

Conclusion

WHO researchers say countries with high road fatality rates cannot develop sustainably and productively. In addition, they are falling significantly in the global rankings due to unfavorable living conditions.

Road accidents not only take the lives of citizens of the country and impoverish families, but also become a heavy burden for the budget and economy, negatively affecting society and the health care system of their country. Therefore, developed countries are increasingly introducing measures to improve road safety, strengthening control over road infrastructure and driving schools, increasing fines for traffic violations and conducting raids against drunk drivers.
