What groups of road signs exist

Classification of traffic management devices

signs Even taking into account the fact that knowledge of traffic rules is carefully tested during exams at the traffic police, a certain part of drivers continue to “swim” in practice. Here it is important to understand the need to comply with the requirements of all types of signs, because the price is the safety of road users. In order to structure and facilitate memorization, all devices for organizing transport movements are systematized by purpose.

The main groups of road signs and signs according to the Russian Federation Traffic Regulations

It is the direct responsibility of any motorist to distinguish and correctly understand the information conveyed by special signs on the road. Together with traffic controller signals and markings, they enable drivers to navigate any section of the highway and drive according to the rules. Pedestrians, who often become involved in road accidents due to their illiteracy, would also benefit from knowing the typology of signs.

The current signage system in Russia, which is based on the decisions of the 1968 International Convention, is divided into groups of road signs and indicators:

  1. Prohibiting.
  2. Priority.
  3. Warning.
  4. Prescriptive.
  5. Special instructions.
  6. Service.
  7. Informational.
  8. Additional information.

In the field of traffic control, each of the classes performs its own functions. To facilitate classification, each category of designation has a specific shape and color.

Prohibiting

Without much effort, you can understand that we are talking about limiters that prohibit any maneuver or action. However, in this group of road prohibition signs there are also several variants of images that are designed to cancel previously introduced prohibitions. The main characteristics of the category are as follows:

  1. objects have the shape of a circle with a red border;
  2. the drawings are made in black paint on a white background;
  3. the installation of the object is carried out directly in front of the site with appropriate restrictions;
  4. it is possible to install a sign in advance using a sign indicating the distance to the area with
  5. limitation.

Priority

Judging by statistical data, the fact that drivers ignore this particular group is the most common cause of accidents. To capture the attention of motorists, some signs have a red border, the same as that of prohibitory signals. The functionality of the priority category is as follows:

  1. establishing the order of passage of intersections;
  2. procedure for passing narrowed sections of the road;
  3. the need to stop for the safety of further progress.

It is important to note here that if there is a traffic light or a traffic controller, the priority signs expire. Traffic police officers often encounter inattention of future drivers in this matter when taking exams.

Warning

Signals are intended to inform you when you are approaching a dangerous area. They have the shape of an equilateral triangle with a red border and images on a white background. Installation of road signs from this group is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. in populated areas - 50-100 m;
  2. outside populated areas – 150-300 m.
  3. Duplication of pointers is possible.

It is also possible to equip the device with a special sign indicating the proximity to the railway crossing.

Prescriptive

A small category responsible for indicating a specific driving mode. The action is comparable to the prohibiting type. Main characteristics of the pointer:

  1. round shape and white designs on a blue background;
  2. prescribe the direction of movement;
  3. oblige the driver to move at a speed no less than what is written on the sign.

Despite the euphonious name, failure to comply with the information indicated on the prescriptive signs is punishable by penalties.

Signs of special regulations

order of signs The purpose of the group is similar to the previous class - it introduces special traffic modes. The only difference is that objects of special instructions assign or cancel several settings at once that are relevant for a certain moment.

The design of devices for organizing traffic in this category is a rectangular shape with white patterns on a blue or green background. Cancellation conditions are accompanied by a red diagonal stripe.

Service indicators

A small class that informs the traffic participant about the presence of important infrastructure facilities along the route:

From the point of view of administrative penalties, this is the most harmless group of all road signs in the traffic rules. It requires absolutely nothing from the driver, and therefore ignoring information cannot become a reason for punishment from traffic police officers.

Information

Quite an extensive category that provides related information necessary for organizing traffic:

  1. location of settlements and administrative facilities;
  2. recommended mode of movement;
  3. names of points and indication of distances;
  4. direction signs.

Additional information

by groups Signs in this category are made in the idea of information plates, which are designed to correct and clarify the meanings of objects of other groups. Can only be used in conjunction with the main index.

Failure to comply with the information provided on the signs does not lead to administrative penalties such as fines. But the verdict will be made only on the main signal, the rules of which have been violated.

The importance of following traffic rules

Traffic rules on the road are actually the international language of all motorists. Knowledge of traffic rules allows you to easily understand any country in a difficult traffic situation. But safety is ensured not only by signs, but also by road markings and controls, which also need to be carefully studied.

Often our drivers neglect to follow traffic rules recommendations and find themselves in unpleasant situations. In severe cases, this ends in an accident, and in milder cases - a meeting with a traffic police officer, when a fine of at least 500 rubles is threatened.

Road signs and their meaning

Good afternoon, dear reader.

In this article we will talk about traffic signs , which are covered in Appendix 1 “Road Signs” to the traffic rules.

This article is the first article in the “Traffic Signs” series and it examines the most basic features of road signs: the division of signs into groups, the designations of each group, the features of their use.

Types of road signs in 2019

Currently, Appendix 1 to the Traffic Regulations has 8 sections, each of which deals with a separate group of road signs:

Road signs are divided into groups in such a way that each group contains signs that are similar in meaning. Let's look at each type of sign in more detail.

Traffic warning signs

Warning road signs are the most useful and safest signs for a driver. Their safety lies in the fact that the requirements of warning signs cannot be violated , because These signs do not prohibit or restrict the driver. The main function of such signs follows from their name. They warn the driver about possible dangers and help avoid road accidents.

Warning signs are installed on dangerous sections of roads and can be easily distinguished from all other signs. Most warning signs look like a red triangle:

The only exceptions are signs related to railway crossings, “turn direction” signs and the “Intersection section” sign. Their shape differs from a triangle:

Please note that all other warning signs are triangles .

Let me remind you once again that it is impossible to violate the requirements of warning signs, therefore, in the area of their coverage, a fine for violating the requirements of road signs in the amount of 500 rubles cannot be imposed.

However, warning road signs can warn you against violations that can result in very real penalties.

Consider an example with a “ dangerous turn ” sign:

If you come across a similar sign on the road, then you do not need to take any special action. However, you should keep in mind that after 150 - 300 meters outside a populated area or after 50 - 100 meters in a populated area there will be a dangerous turn on your way.

At a dangerous turn, overtaking is prohibited (clause 11.4 of the rules). Accordingly, for overtaking on a dangerous turn, the driver risks being punished in the form of deprivation of a driver’s license for 4-6 months or a fine of 5,000 rubles.

Read more:  Punishment for creating an emergency situation on the road

At the same time, the rules do not prohibit overtaking after the “dangerous turn” sign, but before the start of the most dangerous turn.

More detailed information about warning road signs is provided in the following articles:

Priority signs

Priority signs, unlike warning signs, establish priority right of passage at intersections, intersections of roadways, and narrow sections of the road.

In this case, you should pay attention that for violating the requirements of priority signs installed at an intersection, you can receive a fine of 1,000 rubles (Part 2 of Article 12.13 of the Administrative Code). For the same violation outside an intersection, a warning or a fine of 500 rubles may be imposed (Part 1 of Article 12.16 of the Administrative Code).

There are only 13 priority signs, so it’s quite easy to remember them even though they all have different shapes and colors.

Prohibition road signs

As the title of the section suggests, prohibition signs prohibit the driver from performing certain actions. This section is quite extensive, and it is not always possible to determine their meanings from images of signs. More detailed information about prohibition signs is presented in the following articles:

Here I would like to note that most often you can find the following road signs :

Types of road signs

Content

Road signs vary in shape and color. This way you can distinguish their type. Each group includes signs that are similar in meaning.

There are 8 types of road signs in total:

  • prohibiting;
  • warning;
  • priority signs;
  • prescriptive;
  • special instructions;
  • informational;
  • service;
  • with additional information.

Let's look at how some differ from others, and what signs are included in each group.

Prohibiting

As the name of the group implies, the signs prohibit the driver from performing any action: passing, turning, overtaking, accelerating, stopping. All prohibition signs are round in shape.

The fines for each sign are different, depending on the situation. For example, entering a closed area under a “brick” is punishable by a fine of 1 thousand rubles for violating the instructions of the sign. And for driving under a “brick” into the oncoming lane, your license will be taken away for 2-4 years.

Cars that have turned on special signals and flashing lights can ignore prohibition signs. The validity of the signs ends at the nearest intersection or at signs that cancel previously introduced restrictions.

Warning

Warning signs are triangular in shape, white with a red edge. The only exceptions to this rule are signs indicating railroad crossings and turning directions.

The requirements of warning signs cannot be violated because they do not prohibit anything. The purpose of these signs is to warn the driver of approaching danger. For example, about the narrowing of the road ahead, the possibility of animals entering the road, slippery roads and dangerous turns.

Such signs are installed 50-300 m from the danger, depending on where it is located - in the city or on the highway.

Priority signs

These road signs explain who should be the first to cross a road intersection or other difficult section of the road. Violation of such a sign at intersections will result in a fine of 1,000–1,500 rubles.

Signs explaining priority are made in different shapes and colors. They do not obey the general typing rule. For example, the sign with the main road is made in the form of a yellow diamond with a white edge, and the “Give way” sign is an inverted white triangle with a red edge.

Priority signs also include signs warning the driver about approaching an intersection with a secondary road, signs regulating the priority of passing a narrow path, etc.

Mandatory signs

As a rule, prescriptive signs are made in the shape of a circle. Pictograms are most often depicted on a dark blue background. They allow traffic: “arrows” before crossing roads, a sign indicating the entrance to a roundabout, signs indicating pedestrian or bicycle paths.

Prescriptive signs do not impose restrictions, but, on the contrary, require the performance of a specific maneuver: they show the direction, speed and type of transport that can continue moving.

Signs of special regulations

Markers with special requirements combine several types of signs – informational and permitted. Pedestrian crossing signs show where pedestrians can cross the road, and where drivers need to slow down and be especially careful. This category also includes highway exit signs, public transport-only zones and public transport stops.

All signs are square or rectangular in shape and may be blue (arrows, reversing or one-way traffic), green (motorway entrances) and white (special restricted areas).

Information signs

Information signs include blue squares indicating permitted turns, a parking sign, underground pedestrian crossings, signs indicating dead ends, traffic patterns, etc. In addition, these are also signs with the names of cities, villages and streets. In cities they are made in black letters on a white background, on highways - white letters on blue, and on highways - white on green.

Service marks

Service markers show where the nearest service station, gas station or rest area is located. Within the city they are installed directly next to the object, and on highways - from 400 m to several tens of kilometers. There are also signs indicating gas stations with sockets for electric cars.

Signs with additional information

Plates with additional information are rectangular small white markers that are installed in addition to the main sign. For example, a sign “for company vehicles only” or the way the vehicle is installed along with a parking sign. They serve to clarify the sign with which they are installed. There are no types of violations for non-compliance with the sign, that is, a fine will be issued for non-compliance with the requirements of the main sign. However, it is worth keeping in mind that in some regions, traffic police officers evacuate cars from parking lots if they are parked in violation of an additional sign.

We remind you that information about the presence of fines is stored in the vehicle history. And if you are planning to sell your car, the future owner, who checked the history through an online service, may refuse to purchase. Don't let situations involving deprivation of your rights arise. We wish you good luck on the roads!

Types of road signs

All traffic signs are divided into eight groups, each of which serves to convey certain information to the driver. This article discusses in detail the features of each type of sign, as well as their main functions.

Groups of road signs

All signs used on the territory of the Russian Federation are divided into the following groups:

  • warning signs;
  • priority signs;
  • prohibition signs;
  • prescriptive signs;
  • signs of special regulations;
  • information signs;
  • service marks;
  • additional information signs.

Each group of road signs has its own shape and color tone. In addition, all plates have a digital identifier. The first number indicates the group, the second the number within the group, and the third the type.

Each group serves to convey to the driver any information or a prohibition on movement.

Classification of road signs - warning signs

Distinctive features of such signs are triangular plates, a white background with symbols written in black paint, and a red border.

According to the rules, a warning sign is placed 50 or 100 meters before the danger zone in urban or rural areas, and 150-300 meters on roads outside populated areas. If it is not possible to install a sign at the required distance, the distance to the dangerous area in meters is indicated at the bottom of the sign. Such road signs, as a rule, have a triangular shape, so it is almost impossible to confuse them.

Warning signs are installed in rectangular and cross-shaped shapes. Their installation is determined by separate rules and regulations. Thus, signs 1.1, 1.2, 1.9, 1.10 and some others are placed exclusively outside cities and villages. The minimum reporting distance regarding the danger zone is 50 meters. Plates 1.23 and 1.25 are installed directly at the emergency site.

Warning signs 1.7, 1.17, 1.22 indicate that there is no roundabout or pedestrian crossing further along the route. They are additionally accompanied by signs from other groups.

What road signs are from the group of priority signs?

Priority signs indicate a specific road, which is considered the main road relative to other traffic routes. You usually see such signs at intersections and other similar areas with heavy traffic. Regulatory signs may also be placed on narrow roads.

The sign “Traffic without stopping is prohibited” is most often found near railways and barriers to prevent accidents with trains.

In some cases, on the road you can see a regulatory sign and a traffic light, or a sign and a traffic controller. In this case, priority is given to traffic lights or traffic controllers/traffic police officers. Be careful under such circumstances. Only if the traffic light is turned off, you need to follow the sign.

Types of traffic signs - prohibition signs

As one could understand from the name of the group, prohibition signs notify the driver that movement is prohibited.

In turn, such signs are divided into prohibitory and restrictive. In the first case, travel is strictly prohibited, and in the second, it is allowed to continue driving, but with the utmost caution.

Prohibition signs are always round, with a white background on which a specific design is applied in black paint. The exception is four plates with a blue background. In addition, there are four black and white signs that allow previously prohibited traffic.

The signs of this group are the most difficult to learn: for prohibitory and restrictive signs, some exceptions have been introduced that apply to specific types of transport. In addition, it is difficult to navigate the territory of operation of a particular sign.

  1. The first exception applies to drivers who have turned on special signals and red-blue lights and are performing some kind of official mission. In this case, any prohibiting sign can be ignored.
  2. Signs 16, 3.17.1, 3.17.2, 3.17.3, 3.20, 3.24 are mandatory for all motorists.
  3. The presence of signs 1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.18.1, 3.18.2, 3.19, 3.27 does not apply to minibuses.
  4. Signs 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.28, 3.29, 3.30 can be ignored by postal vehicles.
  5. Plates numbered 3.2, 3.3, 3.28, 3.29, 3.30 can be ignored by drivers transporting disabled people of the first and second groups.
  6. Employees of factories and enterprises located in the area of the sign, as well as drivers transporting passengers who live in this area, have the right to ignore signs 3.2, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8.
  7. Taxi drivers with an activated meter can ignore signs 3.28, 3.29 and 3.30.
  8. Table 3.26 allows you to honk your horn to prevent an accident.
  9. And the last exception - sign 3.20 allows you to pass a car that cannot reach a speed of more than 30 kilometers per hour, as well as a motorcycle, bicycle or cart.

It is often difficult to figure out where the effect of a particular sign ends. To do this, learn four rules.

  1. Specific signs cease to operate before the first intersection.
  2. If a certain sign is installed in a city or rural area, then its effect ceases outside the territory of the populated area. Outside a city or village there is always a crossed out sign with the name of the locality.
  3. The coverage area may be indicated on the sign itself.
  4. Sign 3.31 cancels all previous ones.

Types of road signs - mandatory signs

Such signs apply to absolutely everyone. They can indicate the direction in which traffic is allowed to continue, the maximum speed or route for special vehicles. In addition, mandatory signs may allow pedestrians or cyclists to proceed.

Almost all such signs are round, with a blue background and white pictograms.

Features of road signs

  1. Plates 4.1.1 - 4.1.6 indicate the traffic trajectory at a specific intersection.
  2. Signs 4.1.3, 4.1.5 and 4.1.6 have an arrow that allows movement exclusively to the left. In addition, in this place you can turn around.
  3. Signs 4.1.1 - 4.1.6 can be ignored by minibus and bus drivers.

8 groups of road signs

Four groups of road signs were discussed above. It remains to sort out the same number of types, namely: signs of special regulations, information signs, service signs and signs of additional information.

Categories of road signs - signs of special requirements

On some roads it is impossible to establish a generally accepted traffic norm. It is in such situations that special warning signs are used to inform drivers about special driving modes.

Signs in this category are square or rectangular in shape. The background of the plate can be green, blue or white.

  1. Signs 5.23.1, 5.23.2, 5.24.1, 5.24.2 are placed in areas for which traffic rules for populated areas are relevant.
  2. Tables 5.25 and 5.26 inform about the invalidity of the rules for urban or rural areas.
  3. Signs 5.27, 5.29, 5.31, 5.33 apply to a specific area without exception, be it an intersection or any other road with non-standard traffic.

Group of information signs

Such signs are created to inform drivers about different settlements, as well as the location of certain cities and villages.

These signs are always rectangular, and the main color may vary depending on the subgroup. For example, highway objects use a green background. A white background is used to indicate objects within a certain point, yellow - if roads are being repaired. Blue is used to indicate routes outside the city.

Categories of traffic signs - additional information signs

Additional signs serve to provide more detailed information to the driver. They are additional to the main signs. Therefore, they cannot be used independently. According to the rules, no more than three plates can be attached to one sign.

If the additional sign contradicts the main one, the driver must follow the instructions of the temporary sign. Additional signs are mainly installed during renovation work.

Categories of road signs - service signs

As you might guess, such signs indicate various points, for example, car repairs or gas stations.

They are hung in the city limits near the object itself, and in rural areas, or outside the city, in advance - from 400 meters to 80 kilometers.

And we are simply called... ( Signs )

When we learn to read, we form words from letters, and sentences from words. The road language also has letters - signs . They need to be put into words. One sign - one road letter means a whole phrase - road signal .

The city gives us a lesson all the time.

Road signs provide the driver with almost all the necessary information :

about traffic conditions and procedures, restrictions and requirements. You need to know not only what a sign , but also what it is called; in most cases, the name of the sign gives the road user comprehensive information about what is required of him or what is located here.

Signs are installed on all roads around the world . They are the same everywhere, understandable to any driver : Russian and English, Japanese and Arabic, Italian, French, Indian.

Different signs are needed,

All kinds of signs are important!

There may be prohibiting signs .

They can warn

And they will help and advise.

All signs (and there are currently 265 of them) are divided into 8 groups :

warning signs ;

priority signs;

prohibition signs ;

prescriptive signs ;

signs of special regulations;

information signs ;

service signs;

additional information signs

In order not to confuse them and to navigate faster, each group is assigned its own color and special shape - round, triangular, square, rectangular.

Let's get acquainted with groups of road signs .

Traffic warning

Warning signs are the most useful and safest signs . Their safety lies in the fact that the requirements of warning signs cannot be violated , since these signs do not prohibit anything and do not limit the driver in any way. The main function of such signs , as their name suggests, is to warn the driver about possible dangers and warn him against road accidents.

Warning signs are installed on dangerous sections of roads and can be easily distinguished from all other signs . Most warning signs are based on a red triangle, which is clearly visible from afar. The signs of this group from each other by drawings inside a triangle

The only exceptions are signs for approaching a railway crossing and “turn direction” signs.

Prohibition signs

Prohibition signs introduce or remove certain traffic restrictions.

For prohibition signs , images and numbers drawn inside a red circle clearly and categorically say that this particular sign prohibits .

Mandatory signs

The next group is prescriptive signs . These signs images and numbers located in a blue circle. Most mandatory signs Mandatory signs are the opposite of the previously discussed prohibitory signs . Various fines may be imposed for violating the requirements of mandatory signs For example, a driver will receive a fine for driving on a pedestrian path .

Priority signs

signs establish the order of passage through intersections, intersections of roadways or narrow sections of the road . Please note that if there are working controls, signs do not apply. In this case, you should pay attention that for violating the requirements of priority signs installed at the intersection, you can receive a fine. for violating the requirements of signs outside intersections.

signs , so it’s quite easy to remember them even though they all have different shapes.

Signs of special regulations

Signs of special regulations combine elements of both prohibitory and prescriptive signs . For example, sign 5.19.1 “pedestrian crossing” allows pedestrians to cross the roadway, and sign “maximum speed limit zone” prohibits speeding on a selected section of the road .

Information signs

Information signs inform about the location of populated areas and other objects, as well as established or recommended traffic modes. However, they do not force the driver to take any specific action.

Service marks

The signs of this small group inform about the location of service facilities that the driver may need.

You may ask : “Why do I need to know these signs , I’m not a driver?” But a competent pedestrian will be especially attentive where the sign indicating “Slippery road . Be careful if there is a railway crossing or repair work is underway. After all the road says something , the street screams about some kind of danger, and the pedestrian “without a tongue” walks carelessly, because he doesn’t understand the road sign , doesn’t see the signal at the intersection, doesn’t hear about the danger on the street. Ignorance of road language is dangerous . It happens that a pedestrian pays with his life for such illiteracy.

Damaging road signs , throwing stones at them, rearranging them, throwing them aside, pushing them into a ditch is not a harmless prank, not only hooliganism, but a crime. Any arbitrary rearrangement of road signs is extremely dangerous and amounts to a crime.
