This coefficient is called bonus-malus (hereinafter referred to as BBM), and it is quite simple to calculate.

Bonus-malus coefficient

As mentioned above, KBM directly affects the cost of the policy. If the BMR increases, the insurance after an accident increases; if it decreases, the payment for the insurance policy also becomes less. If a driver is a beginner and purchases a compulsory insurance policy for the first time, then the insurance company automatically assigns him a BMI equal to one. Thus, the first insurance is paid in full. This can be easily calculated by multiplying the base rate by one. Every year the coefficient is recalculated taking into account various factors, which will be discussed below.

If the client already has at least a year of driving experience, then in addition to this factor, the insurance company also takes into account his insurance history.

How is the bonus-malus ratio calculated?

The BMR value is calculated by the insurance company based on two parameters. Firstly, this is the class assigned to each driver at the time of insurance. Each class has its own BMC value. Secondly, the insurance history for the past period is taken into account. If a driver spends an accident-free year, then the value of his CBM decreases. If there was an accident, the coefficient will increase. Moreover, the more accidents there were, the higher its value will increase. Using the example of a novice who has just gotten behind the wheel, we will analyze how his BMC will change depending on his insurance history after a year. When a new driver enters into his first compulsory insurance contract, the company assigns him class 3 with a coefficient of 1. What is KBM?

KBM is not used and, accordingly, does not affect the cost of the policy when issuing compulsory motor liability insurance for:

  • trailers;
  • transit vehicles;
  • vehicles registered in other states and temporarily registered in the Russian Federation;
  • period less than a year.

How will the BMI change after an accident if the driver is at fault?

No. But first, let's find out what it is - KBM!

This is the bonus-malus coefficient, which is used when calculating the MTPL policy when purchasing it for a car.
That is, when determining the cost of insurance, we first take the base tariff, which the insurance company sets independently, but within the corridor established by law from 2,746 to 4,942 rubles for passenger cars of individuals in Russia.

Further, when calculating, this fixed amount is multiplied one by one by certain coefficients. As of 2019, out of a total of 7:

  1. coefficient of the region of registration in Russia,
  2. KBM - depending on the existence of an insured event,
  3. limited or unlimited for MTPL drivers,
  4. age and experience,
  5. machine power,
  6. seasonality of car operation,
  7. insurance period.

All of them are applied one by one in the same order as presented in the list above. That is, we take, for example, a base tariff of 4,000 rubles, and if the owner of the car lives in Moscow, then we get a coefficient of 2 - that is, the cost in the calculation increases by 2 times - up to 8 thousand. Further, for example, a person has never been in an accident over the past 8 years, then a BMR of 0.6 is applied - that is, we multiply 8,000 by 0.6 and get 4,800 rubles. And so on until the last coefficient.

But in any case, the final price of MTPL insurance should not exceed 3 times the base rate.

Thus, KBM is the dependence of the cost of the policy on the number of insured events. Its current value is stored in the RSA (Russian Union of Automobile Insurers) database, and is requested by insurance employees every time they calculate the cost of your policy.

Many car enthusiasts popularly call this coefficient a “safety discount”, which in general is not entirely true, because:

    KBM does not directly depend on road accidents,

there may be not only a discount, but also an increase in cost if you often get into accidents and are the culprit in them.

So, the KBM does not always change after a traffic accident, but only under the following conditions:

  • you are found to be at fault for the accident,
  • as a result of the accident, the injured party applied for insurance compensation - that is, the BMI does not change from the mere presence of an accident, there must be an insured event - that is, payment or referral for repairs; Simply put, the insurance company must suffer a loss.

What if it's not my fault?

Then the KBM will not grow for you and will not change in any way. The fact is that this coefficient is designed to motivate car owners to comply with traffic rules and get into fewer accidents. That is, if you often find yourself at fault in road accidents, then your insurance becomes more expensive.

If you are not guilty of anything, then compulsory motor liability insurance should not change for you. Logical? Quite!

If the guilt is mutual?

In this case, regardless of the degree of guilt in the accident, the bonus malus will increase for all its participants. Alas, even an increase in the BMC by smaller values ​​depending on the degree of mutual guilt of each participant is not provided for. Even if you are only 1% guilty, the BMR will change the same as for a 99% culprit.

  • all columns to the right of the first are the number of accidents in the insurance period and how they increase the value for the next year.

How does the cost of MTPL insurance change after an accident?

The ever-increasing number of cars on the roads leads to an increase in the number of accidents. How much will insurance cost after an accident if you were the culprit of the accident?

The value of the BMR is influenced by the number of car accidents due to my fault in which my car was involved, and in which I was found guilty during the validity of the auto insurance policy.

Each accident is considered individually. The insurance company creates a commission that makes a decision on the application of an increasing CBM indicator for the citizen at fault in the collision.

The actions of the commission are determined by the following laws:

  • Civil Code of the Russian Federation;
  • Federal Law of the Russian Federation No. 40 “On OSAGO”;
  • Federal Law of the Russian Federation No. 4015-1 “On the organization of insurance business in the Russian Federation.”

Moreover, if for 10 years the driver has not committed a single accident, but during the last period of car insurance he was the culprit of 2 accidents, then the class is not assigned below the standard one.

Policyholders need to know that the BMR indicator is affected by the number of car accidents during the validity of the auto insurance policy. It is a mistake to believe that the amount of the insurance premium is affected by road accidents committed during the year.

How long does the increased tariff for compulsory motor liability insurance last after an accident?

The duration of the increased BMR after a vehicle collision is influenced by the period of validity of the insurance agreement. Basically, citizens purchase compulsory motor liability insurance for 12 months.

The duration of application of the increased coefficient to the driver corresponds to the period of validity of the contract. After the expiration of its validity period, insurers recalculate the BMR up or down.

The policyholder is advised to monitor the recalculation of the indicator, since the insurance company may use an incorrect calculation method. How long does the MTPL increasing coefficient last after an accident?

From all that has been said, it is clear why the price of car insurance is increasing, but the increase in the coefficient does not last forever. Thus, the impact of an accident on the cost of compulsory motor liability insurance is temporary and the policyholder himself becomes involved in this. When a driver wants the price to return to its previous state for the next year of insurance, and, if possible, a discount to appear, he cannot become guilty of a car accident during the new insurance period.

Consequently, if you don’t get into an accident, instead of class 3, you will be assigned class 4, which means the coefficient will decrease and the discount will increase by 5%. The coefficient will change due to an accident and other incidents cannot affect it.

But the driver cannot influence the validity period of the increasing MTPL coefficient. This means that the increase in KBM will haunt him until the start of the new insurance period. Simply put, the MTPL increasing coefficient applies after an accident exactly until the moment of reinsurance.

Therefore, it does not matter when exactly the traffic accident occurred, at the beginning of the insurance period, the middle and the end, because as soon as the driver buys new insurance, the KBM will recalculate and assign a new one.

Is it possible to avoid price increases after an accident?

All MTPL increasing coefficients reflect the driver’s driving accuracy. This means that the driver is able to regulate the price of the policy himself. By participating in an accident as the culprit, it will not be possible to avoid an increase in the price of the policy, since compulsory motor liability insurance after an accident, or rather, data on incidents is stored by insurers and in the RSA database.

This means that when the car insurance premium increases, the car owner will not be able to escape the penalty. Previously, the driver who was at fault was discharged from the existing compulsory motor liability insurance policy and the insurer was changed. But now such actions are useless, since the increased coefficient for an accident is stored in an electronic database, to which everyone has access, which means it will not be possible to reset the class.

Only those with at least 1 year of accident-free experience can hope for a discount. Their insurance will cost significantly less than the cost of car insurance for a careless driver.
