Examination of car paint after an accident
INAE-MADI - Institute of Independent Automotive Expertise
Expertise
Automotive technical expertise is an independent study conducted by experts at the request of courts, organizations and individuals. It allows you to detect the cause of failure of parts, assemblies and assemblies of the car, the quality of the maintenance and repair of the car, the causes and circumstances of the accident, the cost of eliminating damage and defects of the car.
Our institute is engaged in training high-quality experts to conduct automotive technical examinations, advanced training in accordance with the Federal Law “On Education” and the Federal Law “On State Forensic Activities in the Russian Federation” (No. 73-FZ dated 05.31.01). Upon completion of training, students are issued a Certificate of Automotive Expert or a Certificate of Advanced Training.
Certification
Certification is an independent confirmation of the compliance of automotive experts with the approved requirements of their chosen specialty. Certification at MADI is carried out voluntarily. After certification, experts are issued a Certificate of Compliance with the MADI Register of Automotive Experts, registered with the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology.
Examination of car paintwork
The appearance of the vehicle depends, not least of all, on the paintwork, which protects the body from corrosion. Car paint inspections are not carried out as often as other types of assessments, but there are times when it is appropriate. It should be noted that body coating does not apply to car parts and the examination of a car’s paintwork cannot be considered automotive technical. A paint coating examination examines the paint coating itself, which is the subject of the assessment.
As noted above, in some cases, an examination of a car’s paint is not only desirable, but extremely important. Examination of paintwork is necessary if:
- There are suspicions that there is a manufacturing defect;
- Work to restore the paintwork after an accident was carried out in bad faith;
- It is required to substantiate the seller's claims against the manufacturer if there are typical defects in an entire batch of cars.
A situation often arises when the owner has complaints about the paintwork of the body of a recently purchased vehicle, that is, he discovers paintwork defects. Having contacted the salon, the buyer sees that they are constantly trying to mislead him. This is explained by the fact that the seller seeks to avoid carrying out restoration work. Having received a refusal at the dealership, the vehicle owner is forced to turn to experts, since he needs to prove that his claim has grounds. This requires an independent examination of the car’s paintwork, which will be carried out efficiently and quickly by specialists from the Institute of Independent Automotive Expertise.
Forensic examination of paintwork provides answers to two main questions:
- Is the paint defect a manufacturing defect?
- Will repainting the car help eliminate the defect?
Thus, an examination of paint and varnish materials and coatings will help determine which party will be responsible for eliminating defects. A vehicle paint inspection can be helpful to used vehicle buyers to find out which parts were repainted and when.
An independent examination of the car's paintwork may be necessary if the owner is dissatisfied with the body painting done in the workshop. This is especially true if individual fragments were painted, which, after repair, in the client’s opinion, differ in color from the rest of the body coating.
Extensive experience, high qualifications, use of the latest techniques, many positive reviews - all this distinguishes INAE-MADI. Our specialists guarantee that the examination will be performed at the highest level of quality and in a short time.
Road accident? Examination of car paintwork
The exact cost depends on the specific case. Leave a request or check by phone.
For legal entities and individuals wishing to conduct an examination of paint particles or varnish coatings and other similar materials, the NP “Federation of Forensic Experts” provides an examination of the paintwork of a car throughout the Russian Federation. The main goal of such a study is to identify paint particles found by the customer at the scene of the incident. These can be both domestic situations and road accidents.
Of course, there are often more complex and interesting cases in which an examination of the paintwork of a car is necessary, but below we will consider only the most common of them - that is, domestic cases and road traffic accidents. In the first case, the examination is associated with determining the properties and chemical composition of the paint coating on the object under study. More about the second case - road accident.
The practice of forensic examination in road accidents has been in great demand recently. This examination can be ordered by an investigative body or by a court decision if the case is of a criminal nature or an accident, and privately if questions arise about the quality of the car’s paintwork.
In such cases, the material to be studied is objects with a painted surface, particles that have lagged behind them, and objects to which particles could stick. The objects under study during a road traffic accident include:
- the vehicle under study;
- body parts;
- objects from the scene of an accident, which most likely showed traces of contact;
- coating particles believed to have separated from the vehicle.
Often, when conducting an examination of paint and varnish coatings, experienced specialists help the investigation to identify the culprit of an accident, determining the color and even the make of the car that was the initiator of the accident. Thus, experts in paint and varnish coatings (LPC) and paint and varnish materials (LKM) work together with criminologists and the accident expert service.
Paint and varnish materials are an object of study that is directly related to the subject of our discussion. A specialist in the coating of paints and varnishes, thanks to knowledge of the classification, specificity, particular and general characteristics, and the chemical composition of a particular material, can easily and with a high degree of accuracy answer which particular coating left a mark on the object of study.
But, nevertheless, the likelihood of obtaining more detailed results increases as a result of connecting other types and types of research to the examination of car paint and varnish coatings. That is, the complex work of the forensic laboratory and laboratory, which are under the jurisdiction of the largest expert institute in Russia, NP “Federation of Forensic Experts”.
NP "Federation of Forensic Experts" is an autonomous non-profit organization that offers a very wide selection of various services in the field of expert research for legal entities and citizens of Russia. These are investigations and studies, examinations, analyzes and quality checks of a particular product. As well as state registrations, registration of acts or objects in registers, institutions or departments, events, certain actions.
This type of research, such as the examination of paints and varnishes and coatings, is carried out by qualified specialists of this institution only according to certain methods established here. According to the plan, such an examination is based on answers to specific and general questions, which in turn lead to obtaining the result of the study. Here are examples of standard general questions for such an examination:
- presence at the scene of the incident and at various objects surrounded by particles of paint and varnish coating and materials;
- whether the found particles relate to paint coatings or materials;
- establishing the method by which particles of paintwork or paintwork materials entered the areas and objects where they were found;
- area of application or purpose of the detected materials and paints;
- the technological process of applying a coating or material to its original carrier;
- whether the vehicle has been repainted;
- identification of details of repainting the carrier of the found particles. The age of the object itself and the number of repaints;
- Is it possible, based on the data obtained on materials and coatings, to identify the intended object - the carrier of these paint coatings and materials.
This is how the tasks and subjects of examination of paint and varnish coatings and materials are expressed in general questions. Qualified specialists of the NP “Federation of Forensic Experts” conduct such studies in full accordance with the methodology adopted in the study of such cases.
Thanks to its wide experience and a large list of areas of research, this institute can offer the customer a detailed consideration of answers to all his questions before obtaining a result that would suit him. And in the case when the area under study goes beyond the scope of one expert area, other employees of the institute can also join in solving the problem.
Employees of the NP “Federation of Forensic Experts” are engaged in various studies, mostly exclusive to the Russian Federation, and are just beginning to develop as a scientific discipline. Independent research activities are carried out on this basis.
For the above and many other reasons, many legal entities and individuals turn to this institution.
Examination of car paint coatings and examination of paint and varnish materials often play a decisive role in obtaining reliable information about what happened on the road. She gives a lot of answers to investigations or everyday questions of interest. Every day, there are more and more materials requiring study, therefore, this expert service has more and more work ahead.

Examination of car paintwork
Why is a car paint inspection necessary?
Auto examination is the process of assessing damage caused to a car due to any events (for example, an accident, environmental exposure, manufacturing or operational defect). An independent examination of a car's paintwork is not carried out as often as other types of inspections, but in some situations it is simply necessary. Paintwork inspection refers to automotive technical types of diagnostics.
Checking the paintwork will help assess the condition of the car's paintwork and, if there are deficiencies, identify the true reasons for their appearance.
To do this, an analysis of the hardness, thickness and adhesion of the body coating is carried out. This is done using appropriate equipment. The hardness of a paint coating is a physical and mechanical characteristic that gives an idea of the degree of resistance of the material to local force or deformation. The indicator is measured using a pendulum device or the scratching method.
The thickness of the paint coating is measured using a thickness gauge. The optimal acceptable standard for this indicator for most cars is 160 microns.
Paint adhesion is the interaction of the surface of the car body, prepared for painting, with the paint and varnish material itself.
This is the most important parameter in protecting the body from corrosion. The unit of measurement for adhesion is the peel force of the coating per unit surface area. Testing the adhesion of paint and varnish coatings is carried out in laboratory conditions using various methods and instruments. The main methods for measuring the quality of adhesion: • the method of lattice cuts - used on surfaces no thicker than 250 microns.
Regulated by ISO2409. • tear-off method – used on flat surfaces by gluing a metal plate to the surface being tested and then tearing it off with a special device. Regulated by ISO 4624.
Defects and damages identified during the examination of a car’s paintwork
A complete diagnosis of a car's paintwork reveals deficiencies and damage to the surface of the body or parts. A “defect” differs from the concept of “damage to a car’s paintwork” in that it is formed during the process of forming and applying the paint layer, and not during the operation of the car.
An examination of the paintwork reveals the following shortcomings:
• different shades of paint and varnish coating - non-uniformity of the color of the body coating.
• corrosion (cosmetic)
• “cobwebs” on the surface of the paint layer
• rashes, marks and streaks
• unpainted areas of the surface
• dirt, drips, etc.
Weak paintwork can suffer the following damage under the influence of various factors:
• chipped paintwork - damaged areas on the car body into which moisture and various chemical components easily enter, which leads to corrosion.
• swelling of the paint and varnish coating - deformation of one or several layers of the coating, which occurs locally.
As a rule, the causes of swelling are mechanical damage to the car body, internal rotting of the body material, a reaction to reagents in the atmosphere (applies to areas near industrial enterprises), rust, and poor quality of paint. Blistering leads to peeling of the paintwork • scratches.
Causes of car paint defects
The quality of a car's paintwork determines the degree of its exposure to various factors. Mechanical damage, temperature changes, rain, snow, hail lead to a deterioration in the appearance of the car. Even its most careful owner, who has never been involved in a traffic accident and jealously cares for his “swallow,” becomes a hostage to natural phenomena. Defects in a car's paintwork are inevitable in any case. Therefore, it is very important that the quality of the paintwork is at a high level.
Also, proper car care, regular technical inspection, and refraining from frequent polishing will help extend the life of the paintwork.
It is important to remember that the paint warranty does not always live up to expectations in the event of any problems.
There are many nuances of the warranty agreement that lead to the refusal of the client to repaint. The study of paint and varnish coatings takes place in several stages.
First, a visual assessment of the car’s paintwork is carried out in accordance with GOST 9.407-84. During the inspection, damage incurred during operation of the machine is identified, measured and recorded in the appropriate documentation. Further inspection of the paintwork is aimed at identifying manufacturing defects. High-quality painting should not have any flaws. An examination of a car's paintwork is designed to help new owners of used cars find out whether individual parts of the body have been repaired and repainted.
If the fact took place, then you can determine how long ago and how well the repairs were made. If, after painting the body or its individual parts, the car owner has complaints about the quality of the repair, an independent examination of the car’s paintwork will confirm or deny the workshop’s fault.

Examination of car paintwork
Examination of the paintwork or paint coating will save you from losing money on buying a “damaged” car and will help prove the fact of poor-quality repairs in the service, indirectly confirm whether the car was involved in an accident and save you from a lot of other problems.
Honest conducts an examination of the car’s paintwork both at its service center and on-site.
Stages of examination
Before buying a used car
You buy a used car and ask the seller if it has been in any accidents. A truly reliable answer to this question can be obtained through the examination of paintwork. A specialist will be able to find traces of paint and dents and warn of possible problems with the car.
Before buying a new car
Buyers are faced with the problem of being deceived by dealers - the car can be damaged during transportation. Then scratches, dents or abrasions are painted over and such cars are offered without markdown. An examination of the car's paintwork will reveal traces of repairs and will become a reason for bargaining or refusal to purchase.
After body repair
The car owner turns to the service for repairs of body parts and receives a different color scheme. An examination of the paintwork will confirm the difference in colors and will be the basis for a claim to the service and correction of deficiencies.
Proof of Innocence
The driver is accused of fleeing the scene of an accident, for which he faces deprivation of his license, but the “victims” offer to resolve the matter peacefully - to pay. Moreover, to be sure, scammers may even scratch the victim’s car. An examination of the paintwork will prove that the car did not cause a dent or scratch to the car of the fraudsters.
Duration from 7 days
The cost of the examination is from 10,000 rubles.
Cost of paintwork examination
The cost of the study depends on the number of elements and on the labor costs of conducting an examination of the car’s paintwork. The price of the examination at Honest is specified in the official contract and is final.

Technical examination of a car's paintwork is a procedure that is used to check the quality of the repair work performed. It makes it possible to verify compliance with the technological process when painting a vehicle, determine the presence/absence of critical (unacceptable) defects based on the class of paintwork, and the reason for their occurrence. In Moscow, you can order a paint quality check by contacting the specialists of our research institute.
When and how is the assessment carried out?
An examination of a car's paintwork is carried out when the vehicle owner notices hidden defects or suspicions of their existence arise. According to regulations, this can be:
- separation of layers;
- the appearance of swelling and bubbles;
- change in color of the coating: matte spots, different shades;
- unevenness of the coating: dirt, smudges, streaks;
- traces of operational damage: cracks, chips, dents, corrosion.
These and other defects indicate that when the paintwork was applied, low-quality materials were used or the technological process was not followed. In this case, the buyer may demand compensation, the amount of which will fully cover the cost of the specialist analysis.
When an examination of a car's paintwork is carried out, the uniformity of its application on the body and all individual elements is measured. To do this, the thickness of the paintwork is measured at five or more points.
In addition to the thickness of the coating, its density, hardness, strength and degree of adhesion are determined. To measure paintwork, modern instruments, manual methods and visual inspection are used using technologies described in GOST and ISO.
Preconditions for conducting the examination
Even the most well-known manufacturers sometimes sell products with poor-quality paintwork. Mid-level companies often suffer from insufficient control over technology compliance. A consumer purchases a beautiful new car from a dealership, and after a few months is faced with manifestations of poor quality paintwork. Sometimes there is a suspicion that there are problems on internal parts or that the coating masks body defects. An independent examination of the car’s paintwork will help prove the manufacturer’s dishonesty.
Sometimes you have to face problems after contacting a car service center. Even when violations in the paint layer are visible to the naked eye, workshop owners refuse to redo the work and do not reimburse expenses. Sometimes the opposite situation happens. The repairs were carried out efficiently, but the consumer refuses to pay. There are other situations.
Justice is achievable!
In any situation, compensation for damage can be achieved. A paint and varnish examination will help prove you are right. An official document often acts as an undeniable argument for the other party, and she will decide to pay the costs. If not, then the expert’s opinion will become the basis for going to court. The independent examination is taken into account by government agencies as evidence. But sometimes the judge may resort to additional verification. In such cases, a forensic examination is appointed. Its cost, like all other costs during the process, is usually paid by the losing party. It turns out that for a bad audit the full price is paid twice, especially if the decision of the judicial staff contradicts the analysis of independent specialists.
In order for expert opinions to be accepted without delay, it is better to entrust the analysis of the quality of paintwork to organizations with a good reputation and appropriate accreditation. The low price for the services of some organizations looks tempting, but their analysis does not always serve as an argument during court proceedings. Our research institute carries out all types of paint and varnish examinations in Moscow. State authorities trust the opinion of our specialists.
