How many entries can be made in PTS?

What the PTS will tell you: how buyers of used cars are deceived

Each car has a vehicle passport or PTS. This is an extremely important paper that contains information about the owners of the car, starting from its entry into the country or from the moment of complete assembly and receipt of documents - depending on the origin.

There are only good reasons for a used car not having a title. The only harmless option is if the vehicle’s passport was lost by the previous owner, and a duplicate of the vehicle title was received in return. In other cases, the absence of a passport for a car inevitably means serious problems, such that it is extremely undesirable to buy a car.

What does the vehicle passport tell you?

Alexander Makarov, head of the Avtoexpert66 company:

“PTS can be original or duplicate. The original one is issued either by the manufacturer or by the excise customs office.

A duplicate PTS is issued for two reasons: when space in the PTS runs out (there were a large number of owners of the car, there were many extra entries in the PTS), or due to the loss of the PTS.

Usually, a mark is placed in the margins of the duplicate PTS: a new PTS has been issued to replace either the disposed PTS (this is the first case) or the lost PTS.

The most dangerous thing is to buy a car with a duplicate title issued due to loss. Especially fresh ones. The likelihood that the PTS was not lost, but is simply lying in a bank or some pawnshop is very high.

The PTS makes it clear the history of the car, how many owners there were, how long the owners owned the car.

Now the number of owners can be viewed in the traffic police database, but the real situation is not displayed there. It indicates the number of owners who have registered the car. In fact, a person could buy a car, drive it for a year and sell it a year later, without ever registering it in his name.

It also happens that the title is full, there are no more places to register owners, but in fact only one owner is making his way through the traffic police database. Let’s say if the car was leased, there will be many records about the change of legal entity. persons, and thus there will be no empty seats left in the PTS.”

What should the buyer be wary of?

Anton Nosov, expert in the selection of used cars:

“The buyer should be wary, for example, if a used car’s first owners actively changed in the Moscow region, without registration, and then the car ended up in the regions, for example, in Tyumen. This usually happens with stolen and damaged cars, to make it easier to sell such cars.

Here is an example, the repurchase is not included in the PTS, the PTS is a duplicate, and there are only three owners on the database, the license plates are from St. Petersburg, and the car simply asked for examination. A week later, the person bought it and went to register it, and the car was seized, since the engine and some other marked spare parts turned out to be from a stolen car.

It so happened that the VIN number in the PTS and on the body matched, but on the car blocks there was a different VIN number, which was “wanted.” Such a car also has a duplicate title, and according to the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate website there are only two owners.

Also, the PTS must contain the engine number, which must match that indicated on the engine block itself. If the engine number is different, there must be a mark indicating the replacement; if not, then we refuse the car or go through the re-registration procedure.

If there is gas equipment, there must be a note in the PTS about the conversion. If not, we either take our foot off the gas, or, again, go through the re-registration procedure.

It is not recommended to buy a car if there are no empty seats in the vehicle title, because... in some MREOs they are sent to the owner to receive a duplicate. This is not very convenient, especially if the car was bought in another city.

The recommendation is this: take the owner, go to the traffic police, and in the search window, or with the help of consultation on the traffic police databases, check the car. The traffic police website does not see all bans and arrests. Take the car through inspection, where the traffic police will check all the tags and plates, after which you can take out insurance and a contract.”

How buyers are deceived

Egor Bushmelev, motorist:

“Fortunately, I myself always check a car before purchasing on all possible bases, but one of my friends suffered greatly from the actions of scammers. He doesn’t want to give his name for obvious reasons, but he agrees to tell the story: he bought a used Audi A6 car, the body is alive, all-wheel drive, the engine is in good condition. He went to register the car, the inspector noticed suspicious cracks around the VIN number, and the car was not registered.

They started checking everything and it turned out that the vehicle’s title had a different VIN number. This was revealed later when they started ordering spare parts for the car, and the catalog offered them for a completely different configuration: front-wheel drive, with a diesel engine, and a different color and year. There wasn't much choice, so he sold the car.

Later, having checked the car through the databases, we discovered that the car not only had a fake title and all sorts of license plates had been changed, but that it had actually been stolen in Moscow in 2001, and from some prominent figure, like a deputy.

Of course, my friend should have been puzzled by all these questions in advance - after all, using the specified VIN number in the PTS, he could easily find out that the number does not correspond to the vehicle’s configuration, therefore, the purchase would result in serious problems. At a minimum, you should always look up the main points, such as serial numbers, etc., this will give you a general idea of the car.

At the same time, it wasn’t too suspicious with the owners, only two or three people, despite the fact that the car is already old, this can be considered normal, as well as the presence of a duplicate title, because the original one would probably have ended in almost 17 years.”

How to avoid being scammed

If you don’t want to find yourself in such a situation, check the car’s history using the Autocode service. Checking by VIN number will provide all the details about the car’s title, accurately determining its make, model, color, configuration, all necessary numbers (engine, body, license plate), as well as technical data. From the full report you will learn:

  • Real mileage;
  • Availability of traffic police restrictions;
  • Being in theft, credit, arrest
  • Customs history;
  • History of fines;
  • Information about MTPL and much more.

With a complete inspection, you can be confident in the car you are about to buy and take the risk out of buying a car.

How many seats are there in the PTS: what to do if there is no free space? Lawyer's recommendations

Any driver, when buying a new car, pays attention not only to the appearance of the car, but also to the condition of the documents. One of these important documents is the vehicle passport or PTS. It will indicate how many citizens owned the car before you. Of course, the fewer owners are listed on the PTS, the better. Otherwise, various kinds of doubts arise about the condition of the car. Many drivers are interested in the question, how many seats are there in the vehicle?

How many spaces are there for registering owners on a car's title?

First of all, you need to understand that a vehicle passport is an important document that contains all the information about the car. This document is required in order to:

  • there was access to road traffic;
  • there was control of cars imported into Russia;
  • car thefts and thefts were prevented.

When you bought the car, you were not included in the title, then you will not be able to drive it anywhere. If this rule is violated, then you can expect punishment in the form of a fine. The only exception to this rule: if the driver drives a car by proxy.

So how many seats are there in a vehicle's title? There are only six columns in this document . The plant where the car was manufactured fills out the first column of this document. The dealer fills out the second column. That is, even the first buyer will receive a document that contains records.

Read more:  Which side should the child car seat be on?

As a result, there are only 4 columns left to fill out . But this does not mean at all that a car can have 4 owners. From a legal point of view, this number of owners is unlimited. In each column, the details of the new owner are indicated and his signature is placed. But a situation may arise when the car is often sold, and as a result there is no column left to fill out. If you run out of space in the PTS, what should you do next?

What to do if space runs out?

What to do in this situation? How should you proceed? It’s worth saying right away that no additional papers are issued for the PTS. If there is no space left in the PTS, you must obtain a duplicate . To do this, you will need to contact a service called the traffic police, or rather the territorial division. It is necessary to collect a package of documents before applying.

  1. You will need to present the passport of the person who owns the car. Or you need to show a power of attorney if a person is acting on behalf of another person.
  2. You will need to write an application indicating that you want to replace the vehicle passport. There is a certain form to fill out, which can be obtained from the registration authority. This form must be filled out very carefully, no corrections are allowed, and there should be no blots or any strikethroughs. It is impossible for other numbers and letters to be written in the application. If you understand that you cannot complete the application correctly, you can turn to the services of specialists. You can also get advice on filling it out so you can be informed next time. It is clear that these services are provided on a paid basis.
  3. You will need to provide your old passport for the car. All lines in the document must be recorded. The PTS must be submitted to the traffic police. There they check the document, this is done by a specialist. All data in the passport must be true. They carefully check the vehicle body number, date of manufacture, color, and engine number. All this data is verified in order to prove that this passport belongs to this particular car. When all the data is checked and there are no complaints, the document is destroyed.
  4. The issuance of a duplicate PTS is subject to a state fee. Therefore, you will need to pay the fee at a bank branch or using a mobile bank. But you will definitely need to print out the payment receipt to attach it to all other documents. The fee is 500 rubles.
  5. Compulsory insurance policy - OSAGO. The car will not be registered until insurance is provided. To obtain an MTPL policy, you will need to undergo a technical inspection in advance. Typically, any bona fide car owner has an MTPL policy.
  6. You will need to prove ownership of this car. This, first of all, may be a purchase and sale agreement. This document must be properly executed. It must contain information about the seller, the buyer, and the vehicle itself. The cost of the car must be indicated.

When all the documents are ready, you need to submit them to the traffic police. Here they check the correctness of the application and all other documents. The employee will definitely check whether the car is listed as stolen. Sometimes it becomes necessary to check whether there are unpaid fines, but this is not always done.

Features of the new passport

All vehicle registration details are entered into the new passport without any changes. The passport contains such a column as “special information clause”. This paragraph indicates that a replacement has been made. The series of the previous passport will be indicated, and it will be indicated when the document was replaced. In addition, the passport will say “duplicate”. The document itself is endowed with good protection, which appears in the form of watermarks.

If an official duplicate is issued, then this document will not have the stamp that the manufacturer puts on it. This stamp is only placed on original PTS. The duplicate can only bear the traffic police stamp.

On the back of the passport it is necessary to note the reason for which a duplicate vehicle passport was issued. If you know all these nuances, then you will not be able to confuse the original document with its duplicate. This is very important if you are buying a used car. This is due to the fact that it is in this case that fraudsters can work and provide forged documents.

What difficulties might you encounter?

There is no room in the title for the new owner? This only means that you will have to make a replacement, or rather, get a duplicate. What difficulties might the owner encounter? Problems with a passport usually arise when a car is sold. Many buyers, seeing a duplicate, treat such a document with caution and distrust. And such wariness is fully justified by the fact that scammers often carry out various schemes with a duplicate PTS. You may encounter two problems after purchasing:

  1. The car was stolen, and as a result a duplicate appeared on hand.
  2. The vehicle may be pledged to the bank.

If you have doubts about the authenticity of the duplicate, you can contact the traffic police department before purchasing, where your passport will be checked.

How to find out the real number of car owners?

When buying a car on the secondary market, you may encounter a number of problems. It is clear that every seller will convince that the car is in excellent condition, that there was only one owner, and that no difficulties will arise with the vehicle. But, as they say, trust, but verify. How to find out how many owners a car has had? Now this is not so difficult to do. Internet resources allow you to find out the necessary information online. You can also contact the traffic police. But, of course, it’s easier to save time and find out everything using the Internet.

To check the real number of owners online, you must have a vehicle passport and VIN code. If there is an original PTS, then all owners will be listed there, starting with the very first one. But if there is a duplicate, then it will not be possible to clearly find out about the number of owners. Therefore, you will also need a VIN code. Just go to the portal, enter the code and you can get the result. On almost any such portal, the verification procedure is the same. For example, you can use the portal Autocode, Autobot , etc. Some portals provide this service for a fee. But the cost of verification is low.

Conclusion

It is quite clear how many entries can be made in the PTS. The original PTS contains 6 columns, the first two are filled in by the manufacturer and the dealer. As soon as the free space in the passport runs out, the PTS must be replaced. The replacement procedure itself is simple; if you have all the documents, you can get a duplicate fairly quickly. On the same day that the documents were submitted, even within a few hours, a new document is issued. The presence of all documents, as well as a correctly completed application, will allow you to quickly receive a PTS (duplicate).

On the other hand, if you are a buyer, then you may be wary of a duplicate title when purchasing a car. Any seller will convince you of the authenticity of the duplicate, but it is better to check on your own whether the car has been stolen or whether it is pledged to the bank. To do this, just contact the traffic police service or check the information yourself online using the Internet.

How many owners can be included in the PTS

When buying a new car, the driver always pays attention to how many people owned the vehicle before him. This criterion is important, since the more owners have changed, the more doubts a potential buyer has. The title needs to be checked: if the car’s owner regularly changes, it means that something may be “dirty.”

Number of seats in PTS

Many motorists are interested in the question of how many owners a vehicle can have. From a formal legal point of view, this number is unlimited. A car can change any number of owners; no legal act specifies a “limit” of possible owners. Thus, the number of hosts is unlimited.

However, only a limited number of people can be recorded on a vehicle passport. How many seats are there in the PTS? There is room for 6 owners. When the car passes to a new owner, his name and data are entered in the form in the column following the data of the old owner. The buyer and seller are required to sign in the appropriate boxes.

It is possible that there is no more free space for the name of the next owner. You decided to sell your car, but 6 people are already registered. What to do if something like this happens? Where should I write down the name of the new owner?

What to do if space runs out

Suppose you purchased a car that has passed through more than one hand and there is no free space in the vehicle's passport. If you run out of space, you need to replace your car passport. To carry out this procedure you must:

  1. Collect documentation, which includes a title and citizen’s passport, compulsory motor liability insurance, a concluded car purchase and sale agreement and STS (vehicle registration certificate).
  2. Having selected the necessary papers, go to the MREO (Interdistrict Registration and Examination Department). The vehicle usually does not need to be driven, as official documents confirming ownership are sufficient. You may be required to provide the car for inspection if there are any doubts about the data and its authenticity.
  3. After filling out the documents, you must pay a fee to the state. Then you need to submit the pre-collected documents (clause 1) and the papers filled out in the MREO (form, check for paid state duty).
  4. Service employees will check the accuracy of the information and then issue new PTS and STS. The need to obtain a new certificate when changing a vehicle passport is due to the fact that their serial numbers are similar.

To summarize: the number of vehicle owners is unlimited. The document contains 6 columns where the full names of the owners are entered. If you run out of space, you fill out another similar document at the MREO. To do this, you need to collect certain papers, fill out a form at the MREO and pay a state fee. After completing these operations, you will receive a new vehicle passport. When purchasing a vehicle, you should pay attention to how many people owned the car before you in order to avoid possible problematic consequences.

How many seats are there in the PTS?

How many spaces in the PTS are allocated for indicating the registration data of the owners and what should be done if there are no empty columns, read on.

A vehicle passport is the main document confirming the basic characteristics of the car and its owner. Car passports are issued in accordance with Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 496.

The document establishes not only the PTS form, but also the rules for filling it out, as well as the rules for issuing it.

Where is the number of places on the document indicated?

The standard PTS form, presented in Appendix 1 to Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 496, is made of A4 size paper and has watermarks to protect the passport from forgery.

The document form has its own unique number (indicated at the top of the front side of the document), which can be used to verify the authenticity of the PTS.

On the front side of the PTS, in addition to the name of the document and its details (number), information about the vehicle is indicated. Namely:

  • vehicle identification number (VIN number);
  • make and model of vehicle;
  • type and category of car;
  • year of manufacture of the car;
  • model and number of the engine installed by the manufacturer;
  • chassis and body numbers, if available;
  • vehicle color;
  • installed engine power, measured in horsepower or kW;
  • engine volume, measured in cm³;
  • type of installed engine;
  • environmental safety class;
  • maximum weight and unloaded weight;
  • country - vehicle manufacturer;
  • details of the document confirming the safety of this type of vehicle;
  • introduced customs restrictions (if any);
  • the name of the organization that was involved in filling out and issuing the document;
  • full name and details of the owner;
  • date of issue of PTS.

All other columns of the document are provided to indicate detailed information about the owner of the car.

They indicate:

  • Full name or name of the organization that owns this vehicle;
  • residential address (for individuals) or registration address (for legal entities);
  • date of receipt of the vehicle;
  • details of the document confirming the transfer of ownership. Such documents may be a gift or sale agreement, a leasing agreement, a certificate of the right to receive an inheritance, and so on;
  • signatures of the previous and current owners;

These columns can be filled in independently by the buyer of the car, in a specialized company that drew up the purchase and sale agreement, or in the traffic police department during the procedure for re-registration of the car.

  • details of the registration certificate issued after registration (series, number);
  • registration plates received by the owner of the vehicle;
  • date of registration;
  • name of the body that carried out the registration actions;
  • date of deregistration.

The last columns are filled in exclusively by State Traffic Inspectorate employees.

How many seats is the PTS designed for vehicle owners?

How many places in the PTS for owners?

On the front side of the document there are 2 separate columns for entering information about the car owner. There are 4 more columns on the back of the document.

Thus, the standard vehicle passport form provides for 6 columns to indicate personal information about the owner of the vehicle.

What to do, there is nowhere to add the new owner

If, when changing ownership of movable property, the PTS does not have separate columns to indicate information about the owner, then such a document must be replaced.

The procedure for replacing the PTS is as follows:

  1. The owner of movable property prepares a package of documents required by traffic police departments to obtain a duplicate of the PTS. The package of documents includes:
    • passport of the owner or his legal representative acting on the basis of a written power of attorney;
    • power of attorney, if the procedure for obtaining a duplicate is carried out by a representative. Moreover, if the owner is an individual, then a general power of attorney is issued, which must be certified by a notary. If the owner of the car is a legal entity, then a power of attorney for the right to receive a duplicate PTS can be issued by the head of the organization without notarizing the document;
    • the MTPL (compulsory motor insurance) policy valid at the time of the procedure;
    • a receipt for payment of the state half-tax, the amount of which is established in accordance with Article 333 of the Tax Code and depends on the list of actions accompanied by obtaining a PTS (obtaining a registration certificate, obtaining new license plates, making changes to the PTS, and so on). You can pay the state fee to obtain a duplicate motor vehicle passport at any bank branch, through ATMs or terminals, or online from the personal account of the servicing bank. Some credit institutions may charge an additional fee for transferring funds. When paying the fee through the government services website, a 30% discount is provided;
    • a vehicle registration certificate issued to the owner after the vehicle is registered with the traffic police;
    • original PTS issued by the manufacturer of the vehicle (the car was produced or assembled in the Russian Federation), customs authorities (the car was produced in another state and is imported into the Russian Federation for further use) or the State Traffic Inspectorate (loss, theft, unsuitability of the original PTS).
  2. A written application is submitted to the traffic police, which must include the following information:
    • about the applicant (full name, residential address, passport details, date of birth, contact phone number);
    • about the owner (full name or name of organization, address of residence or company registration, date of birth or foundation);
    • about the legal representative, vehicle (full name and residential address, contact telephone number, details of the power of attorney issued for the transaction);
    • about the car (make, model, year of manufacture, color, VIN number, chassis and body number, vehicle weight, registration plate, registration certificate details, etc.);
    • list of documents attached to the application.

The application form is approved by Appendix 1 to Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs No. 605, which approves the regulations for the provision of services for carrying out registration actions and obtaining duplicates of basic vehicle documents.

The application can be submitted:

  • in person at the registration department of the State Traffic Inspectorate (on a first-come, first-served basis or by appointment, which can be made on the organization’s website or by phone);
  • through the government services website (if you have a verified account).

In accordance with the regulations, a finished duplicate of the PTS can be issued:

  • after 60 minutes, if the registration department of the traffic police is not overloaded with work;
  • within 30 days, which begins from the date of submission of the application and attached documents.

The period for issuing a duplicate PTS can be reduced by the traffic police unilaterally if the document is ready for issue earlier than the specified period. The owner will be notified about the readiness of the document by the specified contact phone number.

The duplicate PTS indicates:

  • all information about the car by analogy with the original document;
  • information about the last owner of the vehicle.

A duplicate PTS differs from the original document by the presence of a corresponding mark and the presence of a link to the reason for receiving the duplicate with the details of the original document.

A duplicate of a car passport has the same legal force as the original document.

For a duplicate you can:

  • formalize a transaction to change the owner (conclude a donation agreement, purchase and sale agreement, etc., and re-register the car);
  • draw up a compulsory motor liability insurance contract and receive compensation payments in case of damage in an accident.

In accordance with the traffic rules, a car passport is not required to be carried when operating a vehicle and is not required to be provided to traffic police officers for verification.

The document is necessary solely for conducting business with the insurance company and re-registering the owner of the car. There are no penalties for receiving a duplicate PTS.

How many places in the PTS for records of new owners

Car owners planning to buy or sell a car ask how many places in the title are provided for registering a new owner. This is a pressing question, because during the “life” of a car it changes many owners. They are written down in the passport along with the characteristics of the car. The document is required when registering and operating a vehicle. There are officially six fields for indicating owners. But what happens after the lines are finished? Is it possible to change the document? Let's talk about this in detail.

How many seats are there in the PTS?

The answer to the question of how many places in a car’s title to register new owners, experts voice the number six. Two columns for recording owners are provided on the front part. Additional places in the car passport are available on the back of the document. This fact does not limit the number of potential owners, because there are no articles in the legislation prohibiting the transfer of a vehicle to more than six persons.

If a person has lost his main passport, he is issued a duplicate. The document is similar to the original passport with the difference that a corresponding note is made on it. The question arises, how many places for recording are provided in the duplicate PTS. The original and the copy are no different in content, so in both cases the number of positions for recording the new owner is identical - six.

If, when purchasing a car, the seller shows a duplicate, you need to find out the reason for receipt and “punch” the data through the traffic police. It happens that a person received a copy for a good reason, for example, he lost a document or it was stolen. Perhaps all the original fields were filled in, and it was not possible to enter new owners (we already know how many places in the PTS are provided in the official form).

But the presence of such a document from the owner should raise suspicions among the new buyer. There are several risks:

  1. The duplicate was obtained to hide information about previous owners. A large number of owners indicates the disadvantages of the vehicle and the desire to get rid of it quickly.
  2. The car was in an accident beyond repair. The vehicle is purchased by the insurer and sold to a reseller. The latter invests money in repairs and sells the car. The original PTS indicates the name of the insurance company, but the duplicate will not contain this inscription.
  3. The copy is designed for sale of the car to two owners. The principle of the fraudulent scheme is to create a duplicate passport for a certain car, followed by the theft of another vehicle and alteration of the license plates. As a result, two cars have identical data and are sold to different people.

The vehicle may be on loan. When issuing money to buy a car, the financial institution takes the original title, and the driver has a duplicate in his hands. Taking such a car from your hands is dangerous, because in case of delay, the creditor has the right to confiscate the collateral for debts. In this case, the change in the owner of the vehicle does not play any role for the bank.

Rules for filling out PTS when changing ownership

The legislation clearly defines how many places are indicated in the PTS, and in 2019 this number is six. The following information is indicated in the provided cells:

  • Full name of the owner of the vehicle;
  • registration of the new owner;
  • the day of the transaction for the purchase of a vehicle;
  • the basis document on the basis of which the right to the car is transferred (the name of the paper and the day of its issue are indicated);
  • autograph of the participants in the transaction (if the seller is a company, in the last paragraph, along with the signature, an imprint of the legal entity is made);
  • buyer's signature.

It is important for the seller to understand how many owners can be included in the title in order to prepare for the transaction in advance. If there is no space available, you may need to obtain a new document. In addition, at the time of selling the vehicle, the old owner is recommended to prepare a copy and save it along with the contract confirming the sale. This is necessary in case of force majeure and litigation (if any arise).

An equally important question, in addition to places in the PTS, is how much time is given for re-registration of the vehicle after registration of the contract. According to the law, the new owner will be given 10 days. The countdown starts from the day the policy is drawn up and executed. During this time, the happy buyer is required to come to the traffic police and submit an application to make corrections to the car registration data.

If the new owner ignores this requirement and continues to use the vehicle, fines will go to the previous owner if traffic rules are violated. In addition, the old owner will have to make tax payments for the car. When you receive a receipt from the Federal Tax Service or for fines, you need to come to the traffic police and ask to deregister the vehicle.

To avoid hassle, you need to figure out how many entries can be made in the title, immediately register the new owner, and re-register the car on the same day.

What to do if there are no places in the PTS

If the car has previously changed hands from owner to owner, there may be no space left in the title to include other owners (we said above how many columns are available). In this case, you will have to change your passport. To do this we perform the following steps:

1. We collect the documents necessary for registration. The package includes the owner's identity card, car passport, MTPL policy, DCT and registration document (STS).

2. We go to the local department of MREO. There is no need to transfer the car - official documents confirming the ownership of the vehicle are enough. But traffic police officers retain the right to demand a car if any suspicion arises based on the information provided.

3. We pay the state duty.

4. We provide the documentation package that was collected earlier. We fill out new papers (issued at the MREO) and hand them over with the main package.

5. Employees study the documentation and the correctness of the information specified in them, and then issue a new passport and STS. Both papers are issued at the same time, because when the title changes, the serial number changes. It should be similar to the numbers on the STS.

Knowing how many owners can be included in the title, the seller prepares for the transaction in advance and makes a new document. With an updated passport, you can go on a transaction and not worry that there is not enough space in your passport.
