It was rumored that AvtoVAZ was able to meet the new environmental standards only using 95 gasoline, which is why it officially banned the use of 92 gasoline. 2. The Volkswagen Polo sedan of the first years of production had a manufacturer's instruction to run on 98-octane gasoline. The 95th was allowed as an exception, to get to the “normal” gas station cleanly. The first owners of the car were a little shocked, they seemed to be buying a budget sedan, but they had to fuel it like a sports car. Fortunately, after restyling, the manufacturer began to specify 95 gasoline for the Polo.

3. The Renault K4M engine is used in a bunch of cars of different brands. Renault allows the operation of this engine on 92nd gasoline without any problems, but the instructions for the Lada Largus said 95th and 98th. Why, since the engine hasn’t changed one bit? This mystery is great.

4. The new Renault engine, which is used on the Arkana, has a very complex design. It has direct injection, turbocharging, coating on the cylinder walls instead of liners, very thin oil, and 150 “horses” extracted from a modest 1.3 liters of volume. By all indications, such an engine should run on fuel with a high octane rating, but the manufacturer officially recommends 92nd gasoline. The mileage of such cars is too low to draw far-reaching conclusions, but for now such a recommendation looks more like a marketing ploy.

We gave all these examples to show that you can listen to the official point of view on the use of gasoline, but this is not a dogma, because the manufacturer does not have the goal of saving customers money and can specify more expensive fuel for one reason or another.

If information from the manufacturer cannot be trusted, then how can you determine what gasoline to fill? Some people rely on the compression ratio of the engine, saying that you can drive 92 if it is less than 9.5, and if you need 95 more, but this is a formula from carburetor times (some may even remember the method of converting to 80 th gasoline using a second block gasket, but this is really old school). Modern injection systems work wonders and allow the use of gasoline with a low octane number even on engines with a high compression ratio. Some people think that they don’t make other gasolines other than AI-92 in Russia (they say they only have additives), so they only refuel with it. Someone pours the most expensive thing there is, as if it is of high quality. But all these methods of identifying the optimal gasoline are very questionable.

In our opinion, the best indicator for determining the type of gasoline is your own feelings. You can simply experiment, fill in different brands of gasoline and compare engine performance, dynamics, and consumption. Engine design, injection type, boost or lack thereof, and even driving style - everything will contribute. If the engine suffers from low-octane fuel, it will clearly demonstrate this: vibration, traction, and unstable operation.

It is not necessary to try everything in a row - for a regular production engine the choice usually comes down to 92 or 95 gasoline; there is no point in going higher in experiments. Higher octane stories are necessary for tuning, which has become easier and more accessible with the spread of turbo engines. I downloaded new firmware for a couple of thousand rubles and now the car has already increased its power by 20-30%, but the hardware remains the same, the load on it has simply increased. In such a situation, increasing the octane number will be very useful. It makes sense for owners of cars tuned in this way to try 98 or even 100 gasoline. But, again, this is not a dogma; you need to check it on each specific car.

Money version

There is a common belief that a car uses less gasoline with a higher octane rating due to higher combustion efficiency and that due to consumption, you can even reduce fuel costs when using more expensive fuel. Such things are perfectly tested by experiment, and the magazine “Behind the Wheel” recently conducted one. They had two Vestas, with 1.6 and 1.8 engines, as well as three types of gasoline - 92, 95 and 100.

Having passed the same route on each of them, the testers measured efficiency and power. Yes, gasoline consumption on the 95th compared to the 92nd decreased slightly, but the difference was at the level of error: 0.1 liters per 100 km for one engine and 0.4 liters per 100 km. This difference is clearly not enough to recoup the overpayment for more expensive gasoline. At the same time, testers did not notice a difference in dynamics, and on the stand the motors showed similar power. And if there is no difference, then why pay more? It’s interesting that 100 gasoline couldn’t improve the performance at all compared to 95; considering its price, it’s just a waste of money. Exhaust, of course.

This test clearly shows that if the engine works well on 92-octane gasoline, then this type of fuel will most likely be the cheapest to operate - those who primarily think about saving money do not need higher octane gasoline. It’s another matter if the car doesn’t work well on the 92nd – you can’t do without the 95th.

In general, the abundance at Russian gas stations is rather good. Drivers have a choice - some will prefer the cheapest option, which is enough for a quiet ride, others want to get the most out of every kilometer and are ready to pay for it. It is only important to decide on your priorities.

Is it worth using Ultimate gasoline if regular gasoline is available?

I'm convinced it's worth it. I only fill my car with Ultimate and other Ecto. But not at all because someone’s stupid advertisement promised ten percent fuel savings - in practice this cannot be. It’s just that gasolines with such prefixes in the name have increased cleaning power and constantly remove all sorts of rubbish from the fuel system. We have repeatedly tested this in examinations - yes, it works! Therefore, if you take a dirty engine and start “washing” it with such fuel, then after a while it will really gain power and become more economical. But in no case is it better than the same engine, which was already clean.

Is it worth using 98 gasoline to make the car fly?

Even if you forget about the price difference, it’s still not worth it. Super gasolines have their own specific area of ​​application - these are highly accelerated, supercharged engines that require high detonation resistance of the fuel. And there is simply no need to pour such gasoline into a regular, ordinary engine. Moreover, with normal, standard adjustments, the consumption on the 98th will be higher, and in most cases you can lose in power. The fact is that the technology for producing 98 is often based on the use of a fairly large addition of high-octane components with low calorific value - which means that the overall “calorie content” of the fuel will decrease.

Is it possible to determine the lack of quality by the appearance of gasoline?

Not always. Normal factory gasoline, without excessive content of bad octane-boosting additives, is either practically colorless or has a faint yellowish or bluish color. But gasoline with a reddish tint should immediately alert you. This color is given by metal-containing additives based on ferrocene or manganese. In addition, the excessive content of octane-increasing additives based on monomethylaniline (MMA) in gasoline gives the gasoline a rich yellow color and a sharp, nauseating odor, which then causes headaches.

Do we sell imported gasoline?

Complex issue. Such things are usually not advertised. According to my information, Norwegian gasoline StatOil, as well as Neste 98, are imported to the North-West. But in any case, you need to understand that they will not make the machine faster or more economical. As soon as you fill the car with fuel with a lower octane rating, it will begin to “be capricious”: make clicking sounds reminiscent of the knocking of valves. This indicates detonation processes occurring inside the engine. Another sign of detonation is when the engine continues to run after you have already turned off the ignition. You can't expect anything good in this case.

To avoid serious damage and expensive repairs, it is advisable to drain low-octane gasoline from the tank as soon as possible and fill the car with fuel that fully complies with the manufacturer’s recommendations. If a breakdown does occur, the service center will quickly understand what happened. In this case, you will have to carry out all repair work at your own expense.

If you have an ECU, the negative consequences are minimized, but then you will significantly lose power. Is there any point in such savings?!

Is it possible to mix 92 and 95 gasoline?

When choosing which gasoline is best to fill, some are forced to mix two brands at once. For example, add a canister of 92 to the rest of the 95th. What comes of this and is it possible to do this?

Some people believe that mixing two “different octane” grades will result in some kind of averaged type of gasoline. In practice, this is not so effective and no practical benefit can be obtained from such an experiment.

You need to understand that if, when mixing, you use gasoline with a lower octane number than prescribed in the instructions, then you at least risk increased engine wear (see the previous section).

Why octane number isn't everything

In principle, refueling a car is an extremely simple matter: go to a gas station; paid for the displacement at the required column; I waited until the ordered amount of fuel flowed into the tank and went about my business.

But... we are in Russia, where the quality of fuel often leaves much to be desired. Even if you know exactly what kind of gasoline you need to put in your car, you are not immune from purchasing fuel of lower quality. For a long time it was even believed that 92nd gasoline was much better than 95th. There was an opinion that 95 was greatly diluted in our country, so it would be cheaper and more correct to refuel with 92. Now the quality of fuel in large cities more or less corresponds to the declared characteristics, although there is still a risk of running into an unscrupulous seller.

You've probably come across gas stations that sell AI-100. Some people avoid such places, others buy exorbitant prices for “one hundred” because it’s supposedly cool. In reality, they, as a rule, pay through the nose for the most ordinary 98 gasoline, just slightly “overclocked.”

And the secret is this. Many people don’t even realize that fuel quality is determined not by one, but by two indicators:

  1. ER by research method;
  2. OC according to the motor method.

The first indicator is the same octane number that is displayed in the name of the gasoline brand. It is determined when testing at low speeds. The second indicator was obtained at higher speeds. Even though it is not included in the brand name, it is of great importance.

So: if you ask for information on that same AI-100, with a high degree of probability it will turn out that the engine rating does not exceed 88. This means that you are buying regular 98-grade gasoline, but at a bad price. Well, which gasoline is better to fill: AI-100 with engine number 88 or AI-98 with engine number 90? Yes, yes, the latter can be found, you just need to look hard enough.

It is also important to properly understand the relationship between octane number and vehicle power. Many people think that if they fill their Lada with 98-octane gasoline, their “swallow” will fly like an arrow. In fact, the situation is this: a more powerful car requires fuel with a higher octane number, but high-octane gasoline itself will not turn the Oka into a Ferrari.

So, what kind of gasoline is better to put in the tank?

We have become familiar with the positive and negative consequences that arise when refueling a car with non-original gasoline. It is believed that all modern cars require gasoline not lower than AI-95, however, with a compression ratio of up to 10, AI-92 is often recommended.

Manufacturers always indicate in the accompanying documents which gasoline is best to fill in a particular car. Ideally, you should strictly follow these recommendations. Manufacturers often indicate not one, but two acceptable grades of fuel. This means that you can refuel your car with any approved brand with equal success. However, given that there is a risk of purchasing low-quality gasoline, it is better to use fuel with a higher octane number.

What to do if manufacturers do not have a common opinion on the brand of gasoline?

So, to understand what gasoline to put in the tank of your iron horse, just open the documents and find fuel recommendations there. By the way, this information is usually also on the fuel filler flap.

But what if two factories recommend different gasoline for the same engine? You don't have to look far for an example. Our dear Priors, Kalinas and Grants, equipped with a VAZ-21127 engine, according to the factory’s recommendation, should run exclusively on 95-octane gasoline. The same engine, which in Vesta and XRAY bears the VAZ-21129 index, is ready to eat the 92nd brand. Why does this happen?

It must be said that such inconsistency is typical for many alliances. It's just that different engineers look at fuel differently. For example, at VAZ, experts think like this: “95 gasoline is more environmentally friendly. The whole world is switching to more environmentally friendly fuels, so we are definitely on the right track. In addition, if 92 is poured into the tank under the guise of 95, the car will practically not notice it. It’s another matter if we write 92nd in the documentation, and instead slip the driver 80th, then it will be bad...”

Conclusion

Using 95 gasoline instead of 92 has become normal today, because in Europe 92 is a thing of the past, and our country is not far from this. Modern cars all require fuel of grade 95 and above. In extreme cases, the plant indicates a range from 92 to 95.

So, you decide for yourself which gasoline is best to put into the tank of your car. After all, in case of an error, all responsibility falls solely on you. But the best thing to do would be to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and refuel only at proven gas stations.
